The average rugby player is the size of an NFL player, has a broken nose, cauliflower ears, some missing teeth, can stop a runaway truck with his shoulder and is a gentleman as soon as the whistle blows.

The biggest reason NFL still has more injuries than rugby dispite having pads is rugby players are actually taught proper tackling form, so even though hits may look hard the damage dealt is small due to being able to tackle properly.

Yeah most tackles in rugby are dives for the legs, rather than these big shoulder hits. Still a lot of bad hits though tbf, there's a big problem with CTE nowadays for a reason.

A bunch of my mates were saying American footballers were pussies compared to rugby players because of all the padding. I had to explain that it’s the padding that makes football more dangerous because people are crashing heads at full tilt. It’s the same reason there were more fatal injuries in boxing after they introduced gloves. People could punch someone constantly in the head without injuring their hands.

Someone Who Understands. Everything happens to the ball carrier not everyone on offense. If you have the ball in your hands you should be aware of your surroundings, Football can get taken out just being close not expecting anything. In rugby they make play safe,American Football is like a car accident

Rugby is a British sport ( named after the place it was first played ) but is now played in around 120 countries .And unlike America a Rugby World Cup is VERY different from an American " World" Championship in that it features teams from all over Africa , Asia , Europe , Russia , South America , Oceania Australia and New Zealand many of whom don't have the free healthcare you refer to.

Both codes of Rugby and American Football are related, they all originate from the same event when William Webb Ellis picked up the soccer ball and ran it across the goal line. American football was born out of Rugby.

The biggest difference is the same players stay on for the whole 80 minutes game, with a couple of substitutes available for injuries or tactics. In the NFL you have different teams for offence, defence etc, with long pauses in between. Rugby has remarkably few injuries.

part of that is the tackling. if you watch the NFL the tackling is pretty terrible for the most part. there is no technique but in rugby you are taught tackling technique from a young age

Added to which the NFL has a guy who just kicks 🤷 nothing else. Rugby is a thinking man's sport, look at Johnnie Wilkinson for one of the best all rounders ever in the game. He could tackle hard, he could direct the game and he was one of the greatest kickers ever. That's 3 bloody players in NFL, defensive, offensive and kicker.

Hussain bolt world record holder for 100m ran it in 9.56ish and weighs 207 lb. Jonah Lomu . 100m 10.04ish and weighed 280lb. That's a 73lb handicap that Jonah's got. That's 5st 3lb here in the uk. That man was a machine.

You can pass backwards and kick forward/backwards. A try (touchdown) is 5 points and is called a try because when scored it allows you to try for a conversion (kick the ball over the posts) which is 2 points. So a converted try is 7 points. You have to attempt a conversion from where the try scorer touched down so if you score a try under the posts the kick is way easier. Don’t forget these guys are huge! Rugby players, especially the forwards are enormous men.

UK female here, love de Klerk, not an expert but his intelligence and reading of the game shine out. My brother is a rugby coach and my nephew and both my children played. My son stopped playing when he dislocated his shoulder bad enough to need surgery. My daughter loved playing but as she is now in her 30s has become a spectator only. When England won the Rugby World Cup in 2003 I let my kids skip school to go to London to join the celebrations. I was watching from home on the tv and saw them in Trafalgar Square - recorded for prosperity! Jonny Wilkinson is my rugby hero. Side note English rugby player Mike Tindall is married to Zara Phillips, Princess Anne's daughter. Zara is a successful Olympic horsewoman as was Princess Anne as a young woman. Check out attempted kidnap of Princess Anne in 1974 - British sangefroid and understatement!

In fairness, a lot of these tackles are very illegal in rugby, but they do happen so you still need to be able to take them. I play as a winger, often the smallest players on the team (for reference I'm just under 6ft and about 140lbs) my main job is to outpace/outmaneuver the opposing team but from time to time I've had to face tackles from guys half a foot taller than me and twice my weight. It's all part of the game and whatever injuries you get in the game, you drink away in the bar straight after.

I'm 5ft 6 lol and was a winger not sure what I weighed 10 13 years ago when I was playing but had to stop due to someone miss judging his foot placement and ended up cracking me knee cap which now has a plate it to keep it together

The main difference, apart from padding and helmets, is you can't pass forward in rugby (although you can kick it forward) thrown passes have to go backwards. Another funny point is, what you call a touchdown we call a try, but it literally has to be touched down on the ground

love your reactions lads; they have recently changed the rules specifically to stop any tackles to the head, a tackle above the shoulders is now penalised. Some of those tackles were done with the shoulder only, this is also now an illegal tackle.

Do you remember the Minnesota Miracle? New Orleans' safety (Williams?) tryed to hit Stephon Diggs (and failed). In rugby you can't do that, it's a penalty kick. You have to tackle, you have to put your arms around the body of the other player. The worst rugby player of the world makes better tackles than most NFL players.

Concussions tend to be more common in US football which might be reason for the protection.in rugby u still get concussions but it's mostly breakages n lacerations.ive seen more mid-air hits in US football.dunno if it's more common overall tho.one thing I prefer bout US football is the forward passing.two of my fave sports

check out Christian Wade, he made a jump from Rugby Union to the NFL, not sure if he's still there but he got put in the Bills roster and had an instant ipact. His debut in the preseason he scored a touchdown on his first touch of the ball!!!

You guys should check out the US 7s team. They go alright in 7 a side rugby. Havnt quite reached any great heights in 15 a side but starting to attract better athletes at least

Just a bit of info for you. In Australian NRL (National Rugby League), the team has 5 tackles to get down the other end for a try (a try = 4 points, the ball must be placed with downward pressure over the Line), then a goal = 2 more points can be kicked from the angle of the try. After each tackle, IF he still has the ball, the player is allowed to then get up and roll the ball backward under his foot to a waiting team mate and the play goes on until the fifth tackle then the ball is given to the other team for them to have a kick to their team which starts the 5 tackles to get down their scoring end. A high tackle is illegal and a head clash can mean a player is sent of for a check for concussion etc. When a player is in the air to catch a kick no player can touch his body but two can contest the ball. Certain types of charges with the shoulder are illegal etc. A player can be sent off for 10 minutes by the umpire. Go look up the rules and watch a full game would be best. Men's Rugby is fabulous to watch. The other form of Rugby is full of scrums which look very messy and is quite differently paced with different rules - still a good game to watch but less open play than NRL. Regards.

I played Rugby for my school for 3 years, during which time I sustained a broken nose twice, 5 fractured ribs 2 dislocated shoulder injuries, and at least 5 concussions. On my 17th birthday (in 1981) I joined Her Majesty's Royal Marine Commandos, I played for my Regiment for 5 years. Representing the Regiment was the highest honour in any sport, and inter Regimental and other Service matches were extremely bloody, violent, extra hard hitting. Sometimes we remembered there was a ball, just sometimes. To find out which was the harder, American Football or Rugby, whilst I was stationed in Germany we had two "friendly" games, one of each. It was Royal Marines against U.S. Marines. The Royal Marines team was a total of 25 players in our squad, the U.S. Marines had about 56 players in their squad. We played American Football first, and we won by 17 points. Then we played Rugby, and again it was a Royal Marine white wash of our American comrades, plus the U.S. Marines suffered a lot more casualties through tackles and a lack of overall stamina to continue playing until you hear a whistle or you a physically incapacitated. My wife made me give up Rugby owing to the long list of injuries and moans and gowns I made when moving around after a game, or when our daughter jump on me for a cuddle. My wife used to keep track of all my Rugby injuries, so it was easy to blackmail me. But if I hadn't have agreed with the Boss, I wouldn't have served within the British Armed Forces for 34 years as an active Trooper. In my last game for my Regiment I sustained the following injuries, 3 broken ribs, 2 broken fingers (right hand), fractured humerus and radius (left arm), fractured left collar bone, dislocated left shoulder, broken jaw with the loss of 4 teeth, broken nose and concussion. I know all this because my wife and owner handed me her diary, with, as she has titled it "Things my idiot hubby has done to himself". I'm to scared of her to be offended. But the boss was right to tell me to stop, if I had continued playing my career would have been a lot shorter. And my wife knows her stuff medically as she's a Ward Sister in the NHS. I was retired on medical grounds in 2017, after sustained combat injuries in Afghanistan in 2015.

What you all miss is that these guys spend years learning the technique of destroying with very little damage. In other words, there are rules for grabbing, pulling and "hits". They learn which part of the anatomy to grab in order to bring the opponent down without causing serious injury. Size don't matter, it's about speed and getting out of a hold....no matter how many men you're up against. Can't touch the greats....Lomu, Wilkinson. Faf de Klerk WoW! Kolisi. Dusautoir and Sébastien Chabal. The list is exhausting. And yes! A lot of rugby players have cauliflower ears lol

Good video and great reaction, some great hits in here, but the rules have been tightened since some of these games, mainly because of concussions, head injuries, and general player safety, and you get either yellow cards (10 minutes in the sun bin) or a straight red. These days you have to tackle low and at least be making an effort to wrap your arms around the player and not just use your shoulders to tackle. Any contact with the head will result in a card these days. It's made these kind of hits less common, but there are still some great hits. I think I remembered you saying in this or another video that it would take a while for these players to get up, but most of the time after a few minutes they are back up battling again. These are tough guys. If they do stay down you know they are hurt and not messing about!!!

Not many Rugby like American Football. We think it's boring with all of the stoppages. And not everybody gets to run the ball and score. Rugby has very little stoppages and everybody gets a chance to handle the ball and possibly score. Jarred Haine transferred from Rugby League to play for 49ers. But didn't last because he didn't like the game.

The video may show different tackles from different matches but it's generally how many there can be in a single match. It's why I loved playing rugby as its such a adrenaline rush

Most of these games are from the Super Rugby Competion with teams from Australia , New Zealand , Fiji and the Pacific Isles. Some are International games between National Teams. The Team in all Black is New Zealand, the team with Yellow shirts and dark green shorts is Australia.

I'm in the British army, and a few years back my unit took part in a big US exercise in the south. Before the exercise and after talking to a few of the marines we decided to have a friendly game of American football that night. My dad is a big fan so I knew a bit, but most of the lads had no idea what the sport was about. There was a bit of confusion after the first play when the gym queen marines realised the skinny kids from the north west of England did not come to play touch football. They happily obliged although they were concerned we could be hurt as nobody had any protective equipment. We assured them (mistakenly) that we would be fine and that they should stop being pussies. We played for about 4 hours straight, the last hour was all running plays as it was too dark to catch a pass. The game only stopped when my mate broke his leg, it was pretty bad and sadly ended his army career, but what a game and what a bonding experience with our American brothers. -Chicago Bears fan

great reaction guys , you should try to catch some games, I like American football but the start stop thing takes a little shine off it. Imagine these guys are playing at this intensity for a full 80mins (with a half time of course). Ref head injuries, yes its a concern they have altered the laws a little to reduce head impacts like you have to wrap your arms in a tackle to stop shoulder barges and a tackle has to be below the shoulder , also the tackle technique is important always have your head away from direction of travel and hit with shoulder.

US sport in general is too start stop. Time outs and all that free throw stoppage and change deensa and offense teams stoppage. Else where teams take fields, chill for 15 mins halfway but other than that the dudes you have on the field are there for the game.

This is why rugby is for real men, no helmet, pads or amour. Hence why many Brits think NFL is for girls. I played rugby for my army unit, that was brutal and huge fun! 😊 Also remember that there are no tv commercial breaks every 5 minutes , it’s a nonstop game. In rugby the ball can only be passed back unless it’s a kick.

Broken ulna shaft and tibia, several ribs, nose and three teeth lost. Typical scrum half at school and loved every minute of it. American football players could learn a lot from these fellas.

Best crossover player is Jordan Mailata who simply grew too big to play rugby league (very, very cardio sport) 6'8" 3 20 lbs and now is left tackle for the Eagles. Great story.

My dad played rugby for 30 years and he describes it as runing into a wall almost continuesly for 80 minutes. He got injured quite a lot from sprained ankles to fingers pointing in the wrong direction. A good friend of the club was also completely paralysed from a bad tackle.

i played rugby for 2 seasons when i was 17 1st time on the wing got the ball nobody outside me n i could run like the wind 💨 or so i thought next thing 18 stone man! hits me 10 yards out and i hit my chin on my knee and bit clean through my tounge LOL😄 great sport !!!! 😁

You will note the high percentage of Pacific Islander names featuring in the hits. They are renowned for it. Awesome power and they just love putting the big hits in. Head on head tackles are now banned.

Two guys come to mind, Jarryd Hayne for the '49's in 2015, he rocked up in off season after quitting the NRL, his pre season games were absolutely nuts as punt return and RB , his stats meant the had to be in the 53, but by mid season the was back on the practice squad, simple things like not knowing where the chain was stopping drives on 3rd etc. He left soon after. The other is Jordan Mailata, starting LT for the Eagles this year, 23 yrs old 350 pounder 6'8" and he is amazing, so agile for a big man, future H.O.F.

Alex C Wade looked such a natural as well, its a surprise he didnt kick on. Jarryd in retrospect was a basket case mentally, he quit NRL judged the best player looking for a challenge and giving up a million a year, he did amazing on pure athleticism but when it came to learning the playbook he wasnt the brightest bulb. He quit again trying to get a gold medal with Fiji 7's the 2016 olympics but didnt make the squad, lack of cardio after a year in NFL.

The NFL have been playing regular season games in London since 2007 most of them at Wembley Stadium a couple at Twickenham and more recently at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I've been fortunate enough to work on the chain crew for 4 of those games

Hi, big rugby fan here (Gloucester RFC) It's a great game to watch and I'm enjoying your reactions! Some rules info for you: It's illegal to jump over a tackler, but within the rules to dive for the try line whilst being tackled. Also to add that many of these tackles would be considered illegal in the modern game. Head injuries are taken very seriously, considering that some ex-pro players have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's due to brain damage. Any hits made by defensive players that are above the shoulder, especially tackles made without wrapping their arms around the offensive player, are given a yellow card (penalty of 10 minutes off field) or a red card (dismissal). Any player suspected of an on-field head injury is taken off the field and examined by the match doctor for concussion etc. We've got to look after these young men and women who put so much on the line for our entertainment Happy to answer any technical rugby questions. Try watching RENE RANGER BEAST MODE. He's 6ft, about 240lbs to 260lbs, probably runs 40yd dash in 4.2 to 4.3sec. Hits like a middle LB, downhill runner like a WR, but LOOKS like a RB!

Yes to give you a feel for it at 7:56, Billy Vunipola usually weighs in at 280 lbs, he was bounced!…. The rules of rugby tightened a few years ago and any contact to the head or neck is an immediate penalty and maybe more if there was intent or it could have been avoided…some of these would be cards nowadays. People agree and disagree with the rule change but they were implemented with the players’ long term future in mind. Especially with the CFE studies coming out. But there is something nostalgic watching some of these hits!

FYI only players holding the ball can be tackled - they can not be tackles in the air or shoulder chartered - hope that helps...

Very few have crossed the pond to the NFL those that have are as kickers because they are better than in the NFL. Check out the kicking, it’s mainly shoulder impacts very rarely do heads clash.

This is NOT just RUGBY, this is RUGBY UNION, there is another form of Rugby played here too called Rugby LEAGUE, slightly different rules to Union but NOT as hard. American football is played here too, we have a local team, some NFL games are played here a couple of times a year usually at Wembly Stadium.

My partner played rugby when he was younger semi-professionally and also boxed, he had to give both up in his late 20's when he had to have an operation on a tear duct in his left eye. He was forced to give it up after being told that his left eye had taken so many hits in both sports he would go blind if it took any more hits.

First sorry for my English, but I am Spanish and with a relative English. In the video focused on rugby tackles, the rules are simple: you can only tackle the person who has the ball in their hands, only below the neck, and a tackle is valid only if it is caught with the rival (if there is no "love", no tackle). The rest are penalty strokes (faults).

Just as a heads up, at least 80% of that clip was Southern Hemisphere rugby. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the best national teams in the world. The English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish and French are Northern Hemisphere national teams and have only held the World Cup twice. The Southern Hemisphere has held it 8 times combined. As for injury and safety of Rugby compared to NFL, it is a HUGE difference in how we tackle and put on hits. Because we play without pads and helmets we use different parts of our bodies to make contact, eg in the NFL they make impact with helmets a lot, obviously with no head protection we keep our heads out of the contact area, we aim for softer fleshy areas and use shoulders more accurately otherwise we get injured were as NFL are so protected they just launch at the attacker hoping to hit. The biggest difference is in Rugby you must use your arms in a attempt to “wrap” the player and the game continues non stop even as you fall to the ground so there is no time to just appreciate your torpedo hit, you have to be straight back to your feet rucking for the ball so how you fall in the tackle matters! That is another huge difference between the games, Rugby players don’t pat themselves on the back, act cocky and self promoting after a good play, they move straight into the next play. It just isn’t acceptable to act that way. I know when we watch NFL and you hear them self promoting themselves, dancing about, acting like spoiled brats because they made 1 good play we all immediately say shut up fuck up you fucking cock head and play the game with some class and sportsmanship! It is on level par with soccer players faking injuries then magically being healed by the whistle. Might I suggest you go watch the women’s rugby highlights as well, they know how to hit as well!
