Our 152,000 Mile E92 M3's dampers are useless - Are used dampers a cheap fix?

After 152,000 miles it's fair to say that the dampers on our E92 M3 are doing very little, something we discovered on our first drive, with the car bouncing down the road with very little body control.
Now with this car being on the 'budget' end of the price scale, we didn't want to jump straight to splashing out for brand new dampers, especially when we have a perfectly good used set from our Japan Red E92 M3, and equivalents can be picked up relatively cheaply second hand.
But will a set of used dampers improve the driving experience of our high mileage E92 M3? Lets find out.

With a basket price investment that's still under 20k for a future classic car with a V8, thats basically 100% with few more tweaks. That is just brilliant guys. Thanks for the videos of the high milage M3. Sometimes cars like these are all that some of us petrolheads can afford.

It doesn’t always work! Sometimes if the springs are too long it’s not possible to get them out, or if the dampers are fresh they can be very difficult to compress. You start to learn which cars it will and won’t work on. But when it does work, it’s a massive time saver, not to mention spring compressors are scary 😂

Another great video Imran. Watching with interest. I've got a 2011 E92 M3 Competition Pack with 155,000 miles on it now. Had your Stage 2 put on a couple of years ago, as well as one of the first Full Eventuri set ups adding the Plenum & air box cover to the Intake I bought earlier. These videos are making me think now, I've noticed the car a little 'squirrelly' (another technical term!) and thinking my suspension could be due a refresh too. Because it's a daily driver I've not noticed the car drastically deteriorating on the handling front, but after watching your comments, think my car is suffering the same symptoms. I don't seem to have as much confidence in it's handling as I did.... Mind you, I put some of that down to the extra 'Oomph' from the Evolve Stage 2! Going to be following this journey and you'll probably see me booked in for some suspension work in the near future once I decide what to do.
@EvolveAutomotive
@EvolveAutomotive 2 жыл бұрын
We personally think at this mileage the entire suspension will need a refresh, and of course we’ll have the costs of that entire job. But by doing it in stages we wanted to see if there was any areas that made the most difference for those who can’t afford to do the entire setup. We look forward to seeing your car in the workshop!

One of my favorite things to modify on a car is the Suspension because of the immediate results, and a good suspension can make a car so so much better to drive. Im planning on getting an E92 M3 now that my E46 is paid off, but finding the right Spec one is damn near impossible for me because I want a NO option one, nothing , none, zero. That most basic one is Impossible to find.

Here's a thing I don't understand about when those wheels are installed on the car. The damn things will seize on the hub flange like these were when they were just removed. Glad to see that Aston is going to add some lubricant to the surfaces. I have a 2008 135i and the first time I took the front wheels off I had a heck of a time trying to get them to break free. I eventually resorted to undoing the wheel bolts a little and then wriggled the steering wheel while the vehicle was on the ground to break them free.

A few tips for E9X M3 owners - Get the Competition Pkg. M3 EDC Shocks and Springs. A little lower and different performance. Need to code the EDC for Comp Pkg. The spring P/Ns are tricky, since there is a table depending on options (weight). X5, X6, X7 etc. EDC Shocks/Struts are $800 each. - There is a rubber hat under the struts...replace those since they wear. - Upgrade the brake lines to stainless steel while you are in there. - Check your front/rear control arms the next time the car is in a lift while getting an oil change. I think TRW makes the same control arms for BMW, but they are much cheaper. Refreshing all the control arms, plus tie rods (steering) is a must after 100k-120k miles.

Want to get rid of that front arch gap plus see if it really better than current stock CP springs and dumpers. And to be fair it’s actually better practice to remove the top mount in situe as when you remove the strut with the top mount in place it’s seriously tight to the wheel arch and it’s a big risk to hit it

Really interesting series especially for me as I got my E92 330d on 160k it needed everything suspension wise changing, OEM m sport shocks, eibach springs, all arms and drop links changed out for new heavy duty ones, including top mounts and bottoms mounts etc. it cost me an awful lot, including 2 rear wheel bearings to get it through its MoT however at 183k it’s now pretty immaculate!

@seanpaul3050

Wheel wobble most likely due to front control arms and tie rods. You can buy a kit and get them all done at the same time. On an old car can also be other things such as wheel alignment camber/toe/castor warped brake discs brake discs not sitting flush on hub due to grit or dirt or damaged mating surface wheels not sitting flush on brake disc again due to grit or dirt or damaged mating surface road wheels could be slightly bent or buckled wheels might not be balanced properly tyres might be distorted/damaged or mounted incorrectly on the wheel rim

Only an idiot would buy spark plugs from a BMW STEALER, unless you get a 40% off trade discount. Find out the part number and buy the same plugs from a good parts supplier. See this is the problem and kind of the point we want to make in this series. People modify cars before doing maintenance, fixing worn out components with additional modifications. Applying a bandaid rather than fixing the actual problem. The rear end of this car is not because BMW designed it poorly, it is because the components are worn out.
