In this video we give a tour of our new Bailey Ridgeway 640. This look inside our caravan is taken while away at Caravan & Motorhome Club Longleat and we show what it is like while we are on holiday.
The caravan is a mess, but we show you what its like with all our possessions and equipment laid out in the dealer special caravan. We have previously given a quick tour of the Vango Varkala awning, so in this video we focus on inside the caravan.

Glad you are happy with your van, it’s a great layout. I was having a conversation with my wife just last night about how to keep the bottom sheet on the bed, now I know! Thanks for the idea Angela, will be ordering some of those now. Take care 👍

Thanks for that, Dan. We spent ages last year looking at all the mid-bathroom 4 berths (Bailey Unicorn Cabrera, Lunar Clubman SR which had lots of good points but the only one using old-fashioned construction techniques, Elddis etc). In each case we wish the fixed beds were just a few inches longer! Our 2006 (!!) Odyssey had serious damp at the front windows so we took it in to a really good repairers nearby to have a look at it, to see if it was worth doing anything with it. Detailed examination revealed the expected damp as a result of deteriorating window seals, and a couple of minor issues we knew about (eg bathroom light not working) but it is, amazingly, structurally fine with no other damp at all anywhere! Plan of campaign is that the van will go in for that work this weekend (may be there a few weeks which is no problem). The window and the niggly little things can be sorted and it can be serviced at the same time after the work is completed. Cost effective and we quite like the van anyway. But we will be able to use it (first trip probably in March?), and then we can gently continue to look at new vans without any pressure to buy ASAP. With the work done, no damp etc, getting rid of the van by sale or PX will be much easier if and when we decide to make the plunge. But I think your layout seems the one we'll go for. Four berths for 2 people.... For us the Alde heating, mid-washroom and end-fixed-bed seems the best option. Can't wait to go out again.....we have in the past spent the evening and slept in our van at home as it is kept on the drive, on permanent hook-up when at home. Never nay problem getting a good night's sleep in the van!

Hi Dan, Another great video. Cheapo baskets, check Mattress clips, check 27 USB ports, check, Throws on seats, check Useless bedroom heating, check. On the last point, you not doing anything wrong, because the warm air has so far to go compared with the other outlets, it cools down on it's journey, we have made it slightly better by a couple of ways, #1, when the living area is toasty, close all the vents apart from the bedroom one, or, leave the bedroom door open so the warm air can circulate. Hope it helps. All the best Black country Dave.

A good caravan tour. In my experience over the years you gain some things and lose others, you were right to do what you did when buying your new van, however as you have now found out they never get it alsolutely right, so you are doing your little tweaks, and quite rightly so to make it right for you. Always enjoy your videos. Regards Bernie

Beautiful van Dan. Your kitchen has lots of cupboard space, way more than our van, we really struggle with that. I really like the aerial plug in with the external plug socket too. Great idea by Angela with the sheet straps, we suffer with it popping off too. We had the same issue with the heating not that warm at the end of the van and the modified ours by fitting outlets at the front that you can close off, and insulating the pipe through to the back. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

We've just changed our van from a Lunar with blown air heating to an Adria Seine which we absolutely love built quality and no problems. However it still has the blown air heating system and a gas fire which we use use on electric/gas. I must say I'm really impressed the electric heat keeps the caravan toasty even in the winter months and is a pleasant consistent heat We've never had the Alde heating system so couldn't comment, only that our caravan warms up very quickly. Glad to hear you are all liking your new van

Well guys we love your videos, only found them by chance on Friday as we were considering buying our first caravan together and although it has been some years since I last had a caravan, my partner has never had one. We had a tiny budget of £3k sat in the bank and went out yesterday just to look and then came away having bought a Bailey Pageant, not from the places that we visited though. It is old, needs some tlc mainly in the form of cleaning and a good polish and then it is good to go. We ended up buying a caravan being sold by a caravan dealer friend of mine who had just had this Bailey in by PX on another Bailey but with damage and he said he would do us a good deal, the caravan has a squashed awning rail at the back that looks unsightly but thats it, 1 hour later it was ours for £1600, a 2001 5 berth Bailey. A bit of a bargain. We will look forward to more of your fun and very informative videos, we are at a similar stage of our lives with 3 children so can relate to your videos and requirements. Keep up the good work.

Hi dan and family.great video, as usual, from you.we have blow air and found the duct had come apart i fixed them and it was better however still not warm enough for the mrs.we have since found that once the temp was comfy in the lounge we could fiddle with the flaps(saucy) and it would put more heat to the rear bed.the mrs still puts an electric fan in as she really feels the cold but i found condensation became a problem in the wardrobes.once again glad you are enjoying your new van and it looks lovely.

Looks lovely Dan, always liked this layout but don’t think it would work for us with two young boys though, on the Elddis forum they had similar issues with the blown air heating so what they done is closed of the valve in the bathroom so it directs more heat into the bedroom and then fitted an electric towel rail/heater into the bathroom to heat that, they also insulated the pipes to reduce any heat loss from the front to the back. we now have a handover date for our van, less than two weeks now, super excited with 35 nights booked away already 😀

Great video Dan. Really surprised to hear your comment about the heating. We've just upgraded the tow car and started looking at twin axles. However we think we've spoiled ourselves forever in the Elddis Affinity 554 with Alde heating! Mrs C is really not sure about going back to any type of blow air heating. That cuts a lot of very nice vans out unfortunately. Our ultimate test comes in February when we have a week in the Scottish Highlands but I'm convince we will not be cold in the Affinity. You've put another mail in the coffin of blown air heating for Mrs C !

Hi Dan The rear heating point being cooler than the rest maybe because of the venting tube exiting and rentering the caravan from the under the floor to avoid your kitchen or toilet room. In our Sprite our rear vent tube misses the central toilet and reappears in the rear bedroom via the underside of the chassis floor. So the air is cooling outside first. I thought about insulation the tube underneath the caravan somehow. We noticed this when we lived in our van in November while moving house. If you have a solution let me know! Thanks for the tour
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. The rear heating pipe does not run externally on our van. Instead its tucked behind the toilet on the left of the caravan. Ive since gotten to the bottom of the issue, the front heating pipes were loose, so when I was blocking the vents to increase air to the rear of the caravan. it made no difference. This has since been resolved, and is all working well now. I have seen others apply some lagging to the external pipework on caravans that have this arrangement. Try some thermal pipe lagging and see if that makes any difference. Hope that helps.

Great vid & gorgeous caravan with awning. The only hacks I wld share is to invest in some VELCRO & stick bits to the bottom of your baskets & cupboard surface areas. This will secure them in place when in transit &:save everything having to be boxed up on the floor. Regarding your cupboards without locks in transit. I would use half a peg, swivel attached flush to the underside lip of the cupboard & a small notch on the underside of the cupboard itself. When in transit, swivel the peg/s to notch, which will secure the cupboard closed✔️ Hope this makes sense in text talk? lol! 😂 ps. I watched all 3 of your caravan buy vids from under 5-15k, all AWESOME, ThAnkh u. 😊👍🏾✔️

Lovely van I will be placing my order next month. A fact that I found surprising when comparing the 640 to the Unicorn Cabrera, the upmarket van of the same format, was that the sofa in the Cabrera is 11cm shorter giving the 640 more stretch out room if you set it up in single bed format and the Cabrera main bedroom is 7cm shorter than the 640 making it more difficult to get around the bed in extended position. I think the 18cm is used in extra toilet room space and cupboard space in the Cabrera. Obviously the Cabrera has very nice extras but more room in the bedroom and longer sofas make the 640 more practical IMHO and at £4200 cheaper than the dealer special its a no brainer.

Well done, a great conclusion to an excellent set of videos. Enjoyed seeing the differences between the various manufacturers based on similar layouts and I'm pleased you are happy with your final choice. Interesting to see that the Swift Vogue 2019 has taken note of many of your observations. I wonder if you would be more tempted by the Swift if you were choosing again? As for us, we have three children, so the layouts you were considering aren't quite what we're looking at yet... FYI, we have a 6 berth Swift Classic Danette (2014) dealer special from Broad Lane Leisure and are delighted with both the caravan and the service from the dealer. Look forward to viewing more of your videos. Keep up the good work.

Happy New Year, thanks for the tour. What do you think makes the Bailey shower better than you’ve experienced in the past. I’m intending trying to improve my own set up. For me, I know that the problem is my shower tap. Although it’s a replacement (£40 from eBay) it provides about half the flow of all other taps in the van, and the flow is fine from the pipes with the tap removed. Just going to try spending the £70 for an OE new tap to see if it works............fingers crossed.

Hi Dan just recently started watching your videos, a lot of handy tips. Nice to see a caravan in normal condition on holiday not messy. You said you used the shower a lot in your caravan,how long did it last before it started running cold ?The reason I ask is because I have a swift 230 2 berth 2007 and the best I seem to get using a ecocamel shower head is about 3.5 to 4 mins . I wonder if you know any ways to improve this ? thanks

Nice. My 2 birth 2016 Bailey Jive (Pursuit dealer special) has the table stashed under one of the bench seats. Kind of annoying but it's only there when travelling. The rest of the time it fits flat against the bathroom wall just by the door and the fly screen frame help keep it in place. I'm surprised they didn't do the under slung spare wheel as that seams to be part of many dealer specials. Like yours, my EHU is on the awning side but its inside the battery locker which makes it flush on the outside when connected. I really need to fit an external TV aerial point in there too but routing the cable internally isn't going to be easy. I'm very interested to see what you did for yours.

Hi We don’t own a caravan but are looking into buying one as an upgrade from camping. Thanks for this video - it gives us an idea as to how things work in practice. You mentioned your lockers that do and don’t lock, and things rattling around inside lockers when on the move. Obviously you empty your overhead lockers that don’t lock before driving. May I ask if you empty the ones that do lock too? And may I ask where you store the contents of emptied lockers when driving? I don’t know if you put some of them in the car and if they take up a lot of room in the boot. It’s things we’d have to consider if buying a caravan. Thanks.

Interested in your comments about emptying the top cupboards when in transit. I know there's the thing about stability and keeping weight low to floor but is that worth it? We never do it and thinking how much stuff is in our top cupboards I'd need an extra hour to empty them and there'd be stuff everywhere!

Hi Nick, its not so much for stability, but the jumping of items in the van during transit. from the top cupboards at the front items would fall out. From the 2nd shelf in our food cabinet - items would fall over. So, just to be safe - we spend 30 seconds just putting stuff on the floor. Hope that helps

We are in Australia and we have a 16’ twin axle ‘pop top’ van and we leave everything packed. We only need to add clothes and food. Very little in the car which is an Isuzu Mux. Thanks for the vid. I notice that the vents for the fridge are in the awning. How does that work of the fridge is on gas - don't you have carbon monoxide in the awning?
@TheTrudgians

Hi Mike, no issues really. The awning is not air tight, and any exhaust from the fridge is quickly lost to the atmosphere. Hope that helps. Dan

Enjoyed the tour, but the important question is...how do you cope with the cat in the caravan!? We took ours once when he was poorly but worry he will escape now he is back to full strengths. Any tips for keeping cats safe in the caravan appreciated.

Can I ask what you think of the Bailey wheel arch cover and skirt you have. Would you recommend buying the Bailey ones to get a really good fit? We have a Bailey Pegasus Rimini. Great video and lovely van! X
@TheTrudgians

Yeah i find it really good. its been great while away in the cold months, it makes the seal around the wheel arch really tight, so keeping the warmth in the awning. Im going to do a mini review on the arch cover - so watch this space. Dan

Thanks Dan. Great video. Without being rude - how much was the caravan & did the Dealer include any extras such as wheel locks etc?
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, the caravan cost £19,300 - it came with a heck of a lot of kit, but didn't come with Wheel locks (You will see a video about that soon, and not needing to purchase the ALKO Wheel secure) . The motor mover was extra, but I did negotiate a deal with regards Diamndbrite in exchange for content. Hope that helps.

Dan, if you didn’t won’t to drill for a tv bracket for the bedroom! We have a bailey almost the same and I didn’t won’t to drill into the soft wood? So what we did is look on eBay and booth TABLET Goose neck clamp and as says just clamp and place tablet / small tv.
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kris, well, thats a funny story, after i recorded this and looked further it was going to be a complete sod of a job to put a TV bracket in, and like you suggested a tablet bracket will do the job perfectly. ive found one with a G clamp that will work really well. You'll see it soon Da

Where is your battery compartment? And what type of battery do you use if your on an off grid site?
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
Morning, on this caravan the battery is mounted under the floor. just as you walk in. if you look at my Motor mover video, you will see a black box under the caravan - that contains the battery. we are using a 100Ah battery, which has a low profile to fit in the battery compartment.

We have a new bailey unicorn Valencia and are newbies to caravanning booked to go away at xmas and to ou horror turned up to the storage site to find caravan infested with mice , any tips , we so far have booked in the wet tray drainage holes in lockers. Help
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
Morning, well firstly this is terrible news. Check with your storage yard about rodent control. Some do, some don't - but ask the question. Also check your immediate neighbours in the storage yard, see if they have suffered the same. It could be that a caravan or motorhome close by have had the infestation. In your caravan make sure all food items have been removed, and if you choose to block the vents - use wire wool outside the vents - to partially block, and discourage any further infestation.

Hi Tony, we gave up using the pink additive some time ago, and instead we use an occasional drop fo Zaflora, or more often than not, just water with no additives at all. Hope that helps. Dan

Hi good video mate. I was surprised how light it was on the tow hitch. Do you think it's because you don't have a front locker for storage now
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
I think it was the way we were loaded to be honest. all the weight (our possessions that were in the cardboard box) were over the middle of teh caravan. We have since adjusted this and we are happy with a 80Kg nose weight now.

@@TheTrudgians ok. Loading a van would be a interesting topic. I still haven't worked out what's best for our caravan.we have a 2012 swift challenger sport 554 towed with a Freelander 2. I run it with a 85 kilo nose weight but still sometimes we get a little fish tailing .

I'd love to know what weight your running at there dan. We take bare minimum in our 4 berth caravan and we are always up near the top end of the weight range.
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Steven, when I took the van (loaded as if we are off on hols) to the local weigh bridge, we came in at 1413Kg - we also had a stupidly high noseweight. So, after removing the awning, the awning furniture and the cadac and relocating them to the car - we came under 1362Kg and a stupidly low nose weight. We are still playing with loading etc as we haven't found the sweet spot just yet. Im going to follow up our weight and adjustment etc in a forth coming video, but my findings so far is i think we need to replate the 'van and put some heavy items back in the caravan, if that makes sence. I hope that helps.

Dan, I noticed you use the Isabella chair, how do you find it 'being of a larger than average framed male', like you I'm a 'bit of a lump', and trying to find a lightweight quality chair that'll take a heavier load is proving to be a challenge.
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, yeah not too bad tbh, ive not had much of an issue with most of our chairs. As long as I can fit in without lubricating my thighs, its been okay. The isabella chair is by far the most comfortable chair weve used - but then its price reflects this. Hope that helps.

Cheers for that Dan, we currently have the Kampa relaxers (don't get me started on Kampa products), and after only a years use, they've started to fall apart, so time for a change. I've been eyeing up the Isabella's for quite some time, the only thing putting me off is the weight limit of 120kg....I'm 140+kg at best lol.

Hi Hoawrd, still yet to see RE A/C - possibly a non starter sadly. As for ALDE vs Truma, i must say we are really impressed with the blown air system. We were nervous about it to begin with as so many people told us the ALDE was the best, but honestly - i think we prefer the blown air.

Hi Dan,your van will blow cold from the rear vent because the black waterproof pipe that runs under the van to the outlet is not lagged so any warm air is rapidly cooled,i have recently lagged mine with Spiral Wrap from Screwfix using about 3 rolls,we aim to start touring again in March so i`m hoping this will have cured the problem for when we have the heating on to take away the nip in the spring air,if it does not work i will lag it with another product called Armacell which i know others have tried with success,sorry for the long post but could be a future project/video for you?,good luck.
