Great video... your guys stuff is all amazing. OG 11-12 year veteran magic player (with some lil kid alpha beta stories) n now I'm transitioning into edh, having fun collecting pieces so I can debut my very first commander deck (of many to come). Obviously the goal is to be competitive and competent, with a monster deck i can play for years to come that operates smoothly and efficiently in a synergistic way... limited to 100 cards 1 of is a stiffling concept for a player with my history in magic. Keep it up, thanks guys, amazing content.

My favorite personal level up was learning how to use cards in unique ways, usually different from their intended purpose, my favorite example of this being casting a biomass mutation, X = 0, and then casting sudden substitution to exchange control of that biomass and someone else's commander. It was a great moment, and I love using cards in weird ways

Feather makes some removal spells into ramp/lifegain. Like Path to Exile gives you a search of lands, and Swords to Plowshares gives you life. The 'Feather, The Redeemer' text gives you the opportunity to cast spells that target your own board to return to your hand at the end step. If you have mana available, you can get lands or life or more
@egoish6762

I think i'm missing something in that interaction, creatures with zero toughness go to the graveyard as a state based action so there isn't an interaction point, unless you are casting sudden substitution with biomass on the stack, i'm still not entirely sure where the trick is though.
@harmlessmuffin8237
@harmlessmuffin8237 2 жыл бұрын
@@egoish6762 The way I understand it, although I could be completely wrong, is that you cast Biomass Mutation X = 0, hold priority and then cast Sudden Substitution. The Sudden Substitution resolves, and switches control of the creature and the Biomass Mutation while the Biomass Mutation is still on the stack. This makes it so you control their creature when Biomass Mutation resolves, and kills the rest of their creatures, but you get to keep the one you stole. Hope that clarifies things.
@thelasttrueblade6684
@thelasttrueblade6684 2 жыл бұрын
@@harmlessmuffin8237 No that's exactly how it works. Cast Biomass Mutation with X=0 (Stack: Biomass Mutation) In Response, Cast Sudden Substitution, targeting Biomass Mutation and the best thing on your opponents board. (Stack: Sudden Substitution, Biomass Mutation) Sudden Substitution resolves, exchanging control of the targets. Your opponent is now casting Biomass Mutation. Biomass Mutation resolves, turning all creatures the caster (now your opponent) into 0/0's.

Mine, too. I was new to Magic in my second year of college, and I was in a 6-way commander game between Saheeli, Sublime Artificer, Anje Falkenruth, The Ur-Dragon, The Mimeoplasm, Sliver Overlord, and Zacama, Primal Calamity. I made a huge mistake with priority and used Magus of the Wheel's ability in the middle of a player's spell ability to select targets.

When I first started playing I always dropped my instants on my turn, it took me a year before I realized “I should wait to play my card draw instants until the end of my opponent’s turn and they’re tapped out”. That was my first “Level Up” in MtG in general.

1:18:00 "Just build more decks!" That one hit me hard, guys. You're right and now I need to go cut so many pet cards from my decks. Also on a totally unrelated theme, I'm going to build a couple more decks.

TLDR: Sideboarding? So my friend has this Kenrith Deck. There's about 20 slots in there that are completely up for grabs at any point, so he likes to switch in say, the teachers/deans from Strixhaven. Or the Walking Dead guys. Or the Stranger Things guys. They don't always make the deck better but it's really fun that it can change themes so fast. Point is, now I can play my pet Kraken in my Arixmethes deck, and then play him more "competitively" just by switching out 15 or so cards. Kinda reminded me that nothing is really set in stone. It feels like picking talents in WoW or going a different build in LoL. Doing this has also made it a lot easier to make cuts in general. PS - Don't let me stop you from building those decks! I ended up with a bonus Alesha deck with all the artifact synergies I didn't get to play in my recent Child of Alara and it's pretty sweet so far. Having a backup deck kinda helps narrow the problem space.
@radikalskippy
@radikalskippy 2 жыл бұрын
@@joshbowdish9851 idk about it. I'd rather have another deck more centered on a single strategy than taking ten minutes after every game swapping out cards. I get that Kenrith is a good jack of all trades but at the same time, he's a master of none. Better to focus on one goal and improve it over time.

I'm a player that loves being the archenemy, and just last week I realized that not pulling attentention with flashy playsjust makes your opponents deal with each other for you. I built a pretty straightforward Tatsunari, Toad Rider that just attacks and spews cheap enchantments and I was baffled no one noticed him nibbling the board until everyone was at 14 life and I was at 26. From there, I already had a good board to take eveyone out one by one while everyone else was in shambles, fumbling each others' plans. It's funny we're always remembering we have 3 opponents while playing, but we're always worried the 3 of them might come for us, forgetting they also have 3 opponents to pay attention to.

I definitely feel this, I've built many decks with the "I have to 3v1" mindset but, instead of what you did. I just decided to control the combat step with cards like Marisi, Odric Master Tactician, Brutal Hordechief, and to a lesser extent Isshin.

Magic really helped me learning to loose, helped me a lot after when I started martial art, and in life in general. We all have to fight our ego, even with cardboard. My most eureka moment was when I downgraded all my decks, turned them lets say from 8 to 7. I have more time and more money than my friends with whom I play and the more I pumped my deck the less fun I had. it's pretty hard to balance deck by de optimizing them when you come from other formats.

I feel that way and at my LGS I pubs stomp with mid-high level decks (non-CEDH) with no infinite combos. I need a new play group. I won't change the way I play because others don't like playing that way so I'll look for people who enjoy high power Commander as well. It sucks but it would suck even more to play 2+ hour games with cards I don't enjoy playing.

My biggest level up moment was to compile and organize all of my decks into Manabox. It's also a card search engine that you can then instantly add the card from searching to your deck. It gives you stats on the deck like how many colors, your mana curve, your creature-to-noncreature count, etc. It's fantastic and I highly recommend it. You can also customize tags in the deck, so if you wanted to tag all of your ramp spells to be able to group them together to see if you have enough you can!

First, I'm gonna say that Ladee Danger's advice is top-notch. In my normal play-group, I don't win that often -- but I've also won games I should not have. Because of losing, my game, particularly deck construction, has gone way up, in terms of skill. However, I also wanted to throw out my own advice to those wanting to use the Commander Clock that was debuted on the Magic 30th Anniversary live show: If you use that clock, learn to think on other people's time. In essence, when your clock isn't going, think about how things are changing, and what you'll do, based on your cards on hand, and what board analysis tells you. That's a piece of information I learned a long time ago, playing speed chess.

I also have the most fun at a lower power level, because I feel that I have the most variety in deck-building with those games in mind and the option to make sub-optimal plays for fun. And my decks are always running too many strategies the first couple times I play them. Really enjoyed everyone else's perspective as well.

Loved the Google Analogy. It ties to my level up moment of applying skills I’d picked up at work around setting up a hypothesis and experimenting. Using the same skills from work in my deck building and games it helped me make better choices when selecting cards. In fact it even saved me money, used play test cards for a few games before deciding whether to invest or not.

My biggest level-up was also similar to Arthur’s and realizing that it (the game, or even life) isn’t only about me. Ended up also tearing my decks apart. But a unique level up I can think of is also within the psychology of MtG. Sometimes it will take time for us the realize our vision of what kind of game we want to be playing. So we should allow ourselves and others a patience buffer of trial and error figuring that out. And much like life, it takes time for us to develop a sense of shared experience. One result of this thinking, for example, could be discovering that our frustrations in our play experiences could be underlying frustrations with deck building.

My latest 'Level Up' was watching EDHRec's video about looking at cards differently. A good example would be Revel in Riches. It's a terrible counterspell, but it's a great 'make treasures' card, that happens to counter a spell. It's all about how you look at it.

I'm such a Timmy! I just loved the purity of simple MTG with you play your stuff and I play mine and turn face and smash. But I learned to play Commander a few years ago and building my deck was quite intimidating. Actually Commander brought me back into MTG after over a decade hiatus. But being able to control the board of 4 players wasn't something I was ready for. I played standard/Type 2 back when, but needing to put in removal and board wipes were so critical. I remember watching your episode of what cards to put in and how many was so crucial. Like how much removal, card draw, ramping/mana rocks, etc. That was my level up moment.

I definitely resonate with the play pattern recognition. Recently built Jetmir and he's 100% a finisher that you don't want to even think about playing until you can actually have 9 creatures on board. He's so threatening that he will eat all the removal so you really need to have protection or know that shields are down, then play him at a moment where you can win on the spot.

I feel like I’m currently going through a level up. I have a had several games in my play group where I get excited and go archenemy first and I draw the ire of everyone. I usually die pretty quick after that. Sometimes I might need to hold back just a little and make a more protected board state at the cost of being less wild. I think I’ve avoided prioritizing protection because some protection is very expensive and it’s more fun to buy the expensive splashy card than the expensive protection spell. Wish me luck hopefully I can become more consistent and have more fun!

As for a personal level up moment for me, my favorite has definitely been a slow build up rather than a single moment. The way I build my decks has improved so exponentially over the years and I couldn't be prouder of much else. Well, maybe aside from my skill, but I wouldn't consider myself a pro lol.

For me it is about remaining focused on what is the main strategy of the deck both during deck-building and in making decisions during the game. I felt like moving away from the generic "good stuff" and cool one-off play that felt disconnected from the rest of the game was a significant improvement.

I ain't sponsored or anything of the sort... but I just got into mtg and previously used yugioh deck builders on my phone all the time. Took me a while to find a decent app to build an mtg deck in. "Deck builder for mtg" even with the low rating, it seems to be the best option for me honestly. Many search options and filter options. It really just needs to have more for other types of mtg since all decks are based off of standard and setting up a "commander" isn't there but yeah. I'd love to see more support for it and see it grow just like "Yugipedia" that deck builders come a long way ^-^

My favorite level up moment is learning being able to recognize unorthodox plays that work to your advantage. I stole Player A's Port Razer and went sideways towards player B while port razer hit player C. In the second attack, port razer went towards player B's now decimated board with the rest towards Player A. Did the same again for the 3rd attack, and on the 4th attack Port Razer just stayed back. Player A was dumbfounded that it could be used that way. I was maybe 4-5 months into the game.

For me it was less of a moment and more of a process. I learned not to hoard imaginary resources (i.e. "But what if I need it later" syndrome). Having a better idea of when to discard or sacrifice cards, what I could afford to exile from my board or graveyard, and other things of that kind, has made my play both more relaxed and more active, as weird as that sounds.

Haven’t seen the new Batman yet, but the Batmen from the video games (Telltale, Enemy Within, Injustice 2, Arkham Series) are phenomenal! Particularly Kevin Conroy in the Injustice games (possibly also the Arkham Series). The video games get to mull the plot over way longer because they put way more levels and content in there than would fit in a movie.

My biggest levelup moment was when I built my Laelia exile voltron deck. It teached me to always be ready to lose your big hitter cards due to impulsive draw. The entire gameplan of my Laelia revolves around exiling top cards and playing them and sometimes the game enders get exiled when I cannot cast it. The big thing is to not rely on just one way to win a game so you are always ready to sacrifice parts of your gameplan. And sometimes if you ahve two cards exiled and you can cast one or the other, the big spell might not be the right one to cast.

One of my biggest level up moment was understanding the timing and flow of the game. I had some decks that were too obviously powerful. I recklessly jumped into the powerful thing my deck did, got targeted, and ended up not being able to do anything else cuz I couldn’t recover from going off to early. Or I blatantly played into board wipes. Now my decks don’t telegraph super hard, and I hold onto spells in my hand unless I have an engine in place, a backup plan, or can close out the game.

My big level up moment happened after about 8 months of playing magic heavily (I know the exact time because it was around my birthday). I was playing against my friend who had centered his commander deck around the card Capsize. I think I had played against that deck maybe two times, but in both of those games he always bounced opponents’ creatures. In one of our games someone stole his artifact, and on his next turn he Capsized it back into his hand. At first I though, “Can he even do that?” and when I looked at the card again, I realized so many possibilities for it I had never thought of before. At first I thought it was just useful for bouncing opponents’ creatures, but then I realized it could bounce anything, and then I realized it could bounce your own stuff, and then I realized it can bounce anything back to you even if someone else stole it. It blew my mind. Sometime after that, I had a similar level up moment with fetch lands. I had always thought of them as just* great for landfall triggers. But then I played my first three colored deck and realized how important mana fixing was, and that it can act as a shuffle if you happen to know the top card of your deck and don’t want it, etc. Now that I can see these possibilities more easily, it seems silly that I never saw them before. But then I remind myself that MIT named Magic the most complicated game in the world, and I feel less bad about myself haha.

Mine is to pack sac outlets: as sacrifice is a cost, it can’t be responded with. it keeps thievery effects at bay. if you’re stealing, that’s a way to never give back their creature. if you lose your board it’s extra value on the way out. if your commander got turned into a 1/1 w no abilities, can send it back to command zone and recast. for such a simple act it is quite the toolbox!

my level up moment was realizing I could make a deck that was possibly not as powerful as my playgroup, but I could still have fun and even win, I've won games lately with low health or only one health even, and it's great overcoming the more powerful decks or still being competitive at least

My biggest level up moments came from building and playing Taiyam, Luminous Enigma. I learned how to build and use an engine and the value of small utility creatures. I tore the deck apart because it could really only win if it went infinite, but it remains one of my favorite building experiences.

My biggest level up moment was cutting cards that offered repeated play patterns. For example: repeatable tutors, I have an aminatou deck, in that deck a card called Wishclaw Talisman is super good, it's a tutor that can be blinked, awesome. But it has 3 problems in my opinion, one is that since it's repeatable I need to always be thinking about what I can get, which can make me tired really quickly, the second one is that tutoring a lot can get you opponents to be a little mad, since searching and shuffling can take long, and the third and most important is that the game gets repetitive, the pattern almost always was: play the card, tutor for oath of teferi, blink it, tutor for ugin, blink it, tutor for fog/counterspell, wait and win.

Two things: Don’t use removal at the earliest possible moment just because something is scary, especially if it’s not coming at you. 2nd thing is that you should build your board at medium speed in the beginning so you don’t become archenemy way too soon, a good setup is key.

Batman Forever is THE best one. It was just so flashy and wild when it came out and Jim Carrey really gave The Riddler a great maniacal and menacing energy. Of course it was a long time ago, but old effects or cg don't usually bother my immersion. Memento is crazy good too.
