THE STEW RECIPE 😃
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
So Spanish bean and meat stews are pretty simple stuff.
This recipe (www.carolinescooking.com/faba...) gives a good overview of how to make an Asturian fabada. The stew I made is a variation on this. However, I used the large judiones (use whatever big white means you can find).
Also, to "scary" the beans, you should pour a little cold water in three times over the 2-3 hours cooking time. Then bring it back to the boil again.
To thicken this stew, at the end I fried a little onion, Spanish paprika and flour to create a paste, and poured that into the stew.
Once you understand how these stews are made, you can swap out other meats, add veggies etc.
Enjoy!
WHO ARE WE? 🥝

You guys are great. Please keep the homestyle videos coming. I love learning about real family life in Spain. There are a million videos about the famous sites. When I go to the Basque Country the best part of my visit is spending meal time at home with my friends Josetxo and Aurea and their daughter Nahikari.

Hello! This is your half American half Canadian fellow here again. This is so interesting what you are showing. This seems like a great tour to me where you show Yolly’s parents’ home and what the city is like in Segovia, Castilla y León. I definitely want to come visit this place. It looks so beautiful. ¡Hola!

Ok, so I'm officially addicted to James and Yoly. Being a Spanish teacher here in Ireland I'm a total hispanophile and love love your informative and fun videos ranging from all things relating to Spanish culture, from 'tapas' to 'La Espana profunda' (can't find my written accents here) It made me laugh when you found the 'El Pais' from 1991, the year I went to Galicia for my gap year and ended up there for four more years after I finished my degree.

Oh man this is so true! My parenti- in laws place in rural Avila is very much like this! The house was literally colder inside than out! We arrived once and the ice was still in the trays in the freezer and it wasn’t even switched on!…and the decor was full of stuff you would see in el rastro!. Although they don’t have any garden there are plenty of hiking trails and walks in beautiful hills, valleys and lakes ! Hope you had a relaxing w/e!❤️

The best use you can make of El País...light a fire. I loved that It's always nice to have a second home in the campo to disconnect from the city life and to show children what rural life is like and connect with nature. The silence at night, the animals, the green all around,...

I believe the reason some ornamental cookware is marked as 'souvenir' is so you don't use it for food or drink as the clay isn't guaranteed not to contain lead.

Loved this video! Yoli's parents' cabin is not so different from the cabins Americans have, a fun collection of "treasures" and I loved seeing the small community with its mesón and the monument to Spain's discovery of the Americas. The slower pace of Spanish village life must be a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of Madrid or other urban areas.

I really loved this video! Thank-you! Most of my time in Spain has been spent in that vicinity of Castilla y Leon (Segovia, Valladolid, the tiny village of Castrodeza), mostly in the small town of Medina del Campo and it's environs. That's where the largest animal shelter in Spain is---Protectora y Santuario Scooby. Your descriptions are apt and evocative---the stark and simple beauty of the high, sweeping plateau always seemed to condense life down to the most basic, and meaningful pleasures. I really miss it. So, while I love Madrid, yes, more videos like this, please!.

James, you're such a Kiwi. In the UK there is a long tradition of bringing home souvenirs from the seaside that all said, "A souvenir of ...." or something similar. They were always tacky, like houses made of tiny seashells but very popular. I loved the seventies feel of the house and Yoly's Dad has great taste in music. The barrels under the stairs reminds me of one in the window of one of your fave bars. I can never get used to how empty so much of Spain feels, especially in contrast to the UK as a small island. A really cool video. Thank you.

So thank you so much for your video. Interesting and ready for more, please. Enjoy.😊

It's nice to get away from the inner city and I've often been to these small village homes around Spain and there are thousands of villages around Spain like this. The people are usually friendly and talkative which makes a change from neighbours in a block of apartments in central Madrid that go out of their way to avoid one another and not meddle or tread on each others' toes. The problem I have with these villages is the lack of activities and it can get boring after 6 days there. If you can get family and friends to go there to meet up in the village holiday home it can be nice for a change of scene but it's the same experience repeated year after year. I actually prefer experiences in new cities, new towns / beaches / woods / outdoors trekking.

this reminds me very much of the holiday home of my ex boydfriend's parents on the costa brava: absolutely freezing in winter and you need to put the mobile gas heater in the bedroom for a few hours before going to bed so you dont freeze during the night and an odd and eclectic mix of cliché spanish touristy stuff and stuff that wasn't good enough anymore for the main house in germany, but not worthy of the bin. love these kinds of places and the calmness of the villages where these places are in the off season.

Y me encanta tambien Espana profunda.✌️🇪🇸🏡 You guys are fun to watch and of course it tastes like chicken. Doesn't everything? 😉😁🙃 Pero la fabada... did you really, really have to call it a "stew"? 😯🤣🤫

Great video. Really interesting. I love love Yoli, she is so sweet and smiley . Loved seeing the baby, Lucia too. I wanted you to introduce her, but I guess you’ve done that in some earlier videos. Haven’t tuned in to you guys for a while, but love your videos So informative. Ultramarinos was a common word for grocery store when I started learning Spanish, so you can guess that was a long time ago (about 1970) I thought it was a weird word but never questioned it, so thanks for the explanation. “Abastos” was the common word in Venezuela. I still laugh when I think of your video about expressions when you talked about “mirando hacia Cuenca” I like to challenge my friends to guess what it means. It’s always great for a dinner table laugh. I live in the South of Spain, near Ronda and am always interested to learn about all parts of Spain, so “keep em coming”

This is so classic second 'pueblo' home. I didn't know you would go in winter - I thought it was only used in the summer. My grandma's house had a few of those things. I think the barrel was used for sherry (Jerez), hers wasn't a souvenir they poured shot size drinks. Also, the Yoly's craft of the matches is awesome. I have a woodcraft I made with the pueblo post card and then little hooks for keys. I need a pueblo home for that.
