Renaissance is my all time favorite group (besides the Beatles). If you want to hear Renaissance at their best please listen to "Ashes Are Burning" or "Song of Scherazade" from the Live at Carnegie Hall album. These two songs are both over 25 minutes in length. On the original LP release they were sides 3 and 4 of the double live album. So glad you love Renaissance. I have been a fan since 1974.

You need to listen to the live versions from Live at Carnegie Hall of Ashes Are Burning and Scheherazade. Strap yourselves into your chairs before you do. This double album is Renaissance at their best imho.

Ok. You do realize that Annie Haslam herself gave you guys a huge shout out over this reaction. You literally brought her to tears. Oh man - you guys should do the Song Of Scheherezade Suite by Renaissance. Like 24 minutes of heaven. And there is "Touching Once", which is one of their top 3 songs ever. Thanks so much for reacting to this one. A favorite for sure. These guys are considered symphonic prog.

I bought this album in 1978 when I was a teenager, it made me tear up then and it still does now at 59 years of age. Annie Haslams voice pure gold!

Song for all Seasons was my very first Renaissance album and first introduction to the band...shared with all my friends in college and professional school...they became quick fans like me...interestingly, this remains my favorite album of theirs: Opening Out, Kindness at the End, and Northern Lights are amongst my favorite songs of all time...i still play on endless loop...theirs is a very very special and unique kind of music!

I too purchased it when it came out and I think I have six copies of it now dotted around because it means so much to me as does all Renaissance stuff. I'm 65 and still find odd transistions in the music where I suddenly think I don't remember that bit!

Hello again. I've been a huge Renaissance fan since i first heard them in 1973 (yes I'm very old!). It warms my heart to seeing young people like yourselves enjoying them like I do. I saw them perform these 2 songs live back in December of 2019 with a chamber orchestra and I was moved to tears. Do go see them if you get the chance. Highly recommend that you react to "Ashes Are Burning" when you get a chance. Thanks from Rob from Long Island, New York.

Hello. I am another older Renaissance fan, since 1973. Definitely my all time favorite band, with the Beatles too. I've seen Annie over 20 times. From classic lineup, Nassau Coliseum summer 1974, to current lineup with chamber orchestra.

I love how Renaissance pulls medieval music through their musical time machine into the future. With Annie's 5-octave range, we're transported to a new, mystical, beautiful dimension.

John Tout was a genius in arranging the piano and orchestral parts yet never gets talked about in the same vein as Keith Emerson Elton John Billy Joel Rick Wakeman and other Pianist and Keyboardist that he should be like Mike Dunford on Guitar as well as Betty Thatcher-Newsinger for Lyrics R.I.P all 3 former members and their Cornish lyricist. Jon Camp and Terence Sullivan need to be recognised as well for co-creating this fabulous music. Nice to be FB friends with both. They even say Happy Birthday to their friends there, makes all of us feel special ❤

The "Day of the Dreamer" part of this song has several great things about it, but I'll mention two: Annie's beautiful voice in the middle part, and the ending that sounds like the finish of a Symphony. Brilliant!

Annie has the voice of an angel and Ive seen then live about 40 times in my life Annies voice is so good she makes men cry a happy cry. They also have the best live album ever live at Carnegie Hall New York City Annie lives an hr from me now in bucks County P.A. I'm in south jersey. The band is great and Annie has the voice of an Angel

I saw them many times, from the 1970's, in the Philly area ( Annie now lives in nearby Bucks County). They pulled this stuff off live. Annie was the only singer I heard, while sitting at the table next to the stage, at the old Chestnut Cabaret in Philly, out sing her PA. She is always perfect.

Welcome to the majestic orchestral genius of Renaissance. John Tout reproduced the sounds of orchestras on his keyboards, Jon Camp drove the dominant bass lines and handled the male voice leads and harmonies, Michael Dunford composed, played mostly acoustic guitar, but added electric from time to time, Terrance Sullivan kept everything together with his brilliant percussion and, of course, the angelic voice of Annie Haslam, five octive operatically trained. Most of their compositions are based on classical composers, many Russian influences. Their absolute masterpiece is "Song Of Scheherazade". It is influenced by Rimsy-Korsokov and although an entire side of a vinyl record, well worth a review. It's genius cannot be understated or over appreciated. Welcome to some of my all-time favorite music ... I listen to Renaissance all the time and watching live videos makes you wonder where they are hiding the orchestra ... shhhhhh ... it's in Tout's keyboards. John Tout is the best keyboardist nobody knows about. He is, very unfortunately, no longer with us and neither is the brilliant Michael Dunford. Severe losses in my life. Love you guys!

Been a strong listener of this band since 72, I met Annie in the early 80's while attending a king Crimson show in NYC, we chatted for a spell, I was star struck as I floated back to my seat. She seemed to enjoy the recognition and praise, pretty sure I was the only one to recognize her that evening. She was as sweet, humble, and beautiful as one can imagine. She still attends many prog acts in her tri state area, God love her.

Hey guys, my thoughts...the soft ballad section in Day of the dreamer is one of the most beautiful pieces of music and lyric ever written, and your man Nick fell for it hook line and sinker, LoL...I love it!. I wasn't sure if Nick was feeling it and then suddenly boom, something touched him. Renaissance offers tons more, go for it my feathered friends.

You need to hear the Renaissance album “Novella”. A good starting point is the beginning (perhaps obviously 😁) with “Can You Hear Me” and moving through the album from there. I think you’ll love it.

Some people don't like Prog Rock because of the extended instrumental parts, "It's just filler!" they say. To me, it's storytelling. Stories travel winding roads, and there is no reason that words be the only medium winding down those roads. Paintings and drawings tell stories. Dances tells stories. And *music* tells stories. That's why it sounds like a film score. In my opinion, Yes and Renaissance are the best at using music to further the story. Prior to today, I was familiar with only the last three songs on this album. If the rest of it is as good as those three and these two, this may become my favorite Renaissance album, pushing Scheherazade and Other Stories into second place. Lately I've been filling the house with Prologue, Ashes are Burning, Turn of the Cards, Scheherazade, and Novella while I write, and the other day my wife said, "I've just been lying on the bed listening to your music and, my gosh, it's beautiful. The music's beautiful, Annie's voice is gorgeous, and she has so much control; it's incredible." I said, "Just like Joni. They don't have the same tone, but they both have perfect control over their voices." This was a joy to watch. Thank you.

Very nice that you're getting to experience Renaissance a second time. Their songwriting and musicianship are top tier and quite unique for the mid-70s. They have many long format songs that have that dream-like quality and I can name 10 easily. A couple of their shorter songs that also are great are "Midas Man" and "At The Harbor". The latter one has somewhat more stripped back instrumentation and Annie's voice really shines. When you eventually get to Yes' "And You and I" that will be a song that comes closest to what Renaissance sounds like (even though "And You and I" pre-dates Renaissance with Annie Haslam).

Staying on the same album, their classic Northern Lights is recommended. Then the title track, A Song For All Seasons, another beautifully constructed masterpiece. These two plus the first two you've just done are the core of this very good album.

Hello again guys part II. I first watched your reaction to Mother Russia and now this. Glad you like Renaissance. I have to tell you in watching your reaction to Yes and now Renaissance you are in the shallow end of the pool....meaning you haven't hit the motherlode yet...that's down the path. (Hard to believe after what you've just listened to). My humble suggestion is to go backwards a bit to well you could do Prologue or I would prefer Ashes are Burning album. Maybe the short and delightful Carpet of the Sun first then the wonderful Can You Understand....Save the title track for last. The studio version is great (love it)...but wow the live version is Stellar (by the way its 25 minutes long). I've seen Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, etc. Yet my all time favorite concert experience is Ashes are Burning...especially the ending. Note: since I mentioned Yes...wait till you get into their masterpieces. You guys are in for a ride. 😎

Anyone still listening to Renaissance today is refreshing to see . This is complex music not seen today. I have been watching your channel for a bit and you guy's are replaying some great stuff! I've had every Renaissance album for as long as I can remember, and Day Of The Dreamer is EASILY my favorite song by them! But I still remember the first time I heard this one, and what struck me most were those incredible changes! Like, the music is flying along in one direction, and then suddenly, they take a hard left & from out of nowhere, here comes some percussion, or a heartfelt piano melody! I remember thinking, "Wait - what are you DOING? There's no reason for this new part!...". But then I heard where they were going & how well everything just FIT so perfectly, and I thought "Oh, O.K. - I get it now'" Superb writing, incredible musicianship & flawless vocals - this piece is nothing short of PERFECTION!

Renaissance were shamefully overlooked by their fellow UK citizens and made it bigger in the US. This was primarily due to UK's prime minister Edward Heath (an awful dullard), who announced that Renaissance were his favourite band. Thus Renaissance got the kiss of death, and the record buying young persons in the UK dropped them from their shopping lists. Interestingly, Annie Haslam was a long time girlfriend of rock star Roy Wood, co-founder of The Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard, who with Wizzard had a huge UK hit with one of the all time great Christmas Rock songs, I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday. This song still gets airplay on the radio at Christmas, some 50 years after its release. Finally, if angels could choose a voice, it would be Annie's.

I saw Renaissance in concert at least seven times back in the 1970s, mostly in N.Y., but I think the one I enjoyed most was when they opened for Yes in Las Vegas in 1976. To this day they are still among my three or four all time favorite bands and I still listen to them. Nobody makes music like that anymore.

This was a band that wasn't on my radar. I can recall hearing one of their songs when I was in my late-teens, and it didn't register. Not sure why, maybe because I was getting into harder stuff back in 1981. I was re-introduced recently by Mike Portnoy, and his series on his Vinyl collection (which I HIGHLY recommend for everyone), and his copy of "A Song for All Seasons" (edit: Now come to think of it, maybe it was Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth, who points it out at a record store), so I checked it out and it was tremendous. Annie Haslam's voice is as if from another century. And yes Nick, the music is very much like a Film Score from the 1970's, big and grand! There is a CD copy waiting for me at a local record store I should snatch-up. Btw - Lex, there is a track from this album on one of the Playlists I sent you, so I hope it add's to your studies.

Thank you Allison Steel and WNEW/NYC - they introduced me to Renaissance in the early 70s and they still are a part of me today. Annie is the voice and has kept Renaissance alive to this very day! We are very lucky!!

I bought this album as soon as it came out in the late 70's. Totally wore out the vinyl and probable pissed off a few people in my college dorm because I would blast Day of the Dreamer, Northern Lights, and Song for all Seasons out the window. But I also turned quite a few of my friends into Renaissance fans. Great music to get high by!. Annie Haslam is one of the prides of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. React to Midas Man, Black Flame, Can You Understand, Trip to the Fair, and of course Ashes are Burning. Enjoy!

Your comments & perception of Renaissance is perfect! They take you to places. And yes, they're not a "Rock" band. I was so blessed to see them in 76 with Gentle Giant. Annie was like an angel. I was in tears at 18:00 but then you cut it off. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

If you were to play Procol Harum's song "Whaling Stories" from the 1970 album "Home" after this, I think you'd recognize something. Another one for my list I guess. For many reaction channels, the volume of the music is low compared to the mic. This one is the opposite - when you pause to comment, I have to turn the vol. up., and then down when the music resumes. If you like this music I bet you would also like the group Nightwish with their female vocalist Floor Jansen. They are classified as symphonic metal.

Such a terrific album. First one of theirs I heard and bought. Blew my mind. Great musicians and there are few voices like Annie's. Glad you're continuing the Renaissance journey. Back Home Once Again on this album actually is a theme song to a British TV show, so yes very cinematic in sound.

Renaissance is celebrating 50 years as a band this June they are releasing Ashes Are Burning: 50th Anniversary box set. Even though there are no original members, Annie Haslam has been in it since 1971. She still sings like an angel.

I like to think that I’m a big Renaissance fan, but I’ve never heard these two songs. I guess I have to buy this album now. I don’t remember the drummer (Terry Sullivan?) being this involved in their earlier songs. Jon Camp’s bass sounded really good on the second song. When you’re ready to do a special reaction, consider Scheherazade, either the studio version or the live version from Live at Carnegie Hall. It’s the length of an album side, but worth the investment in time.

Song Of Scheherezade and Terence Sullivan formed Renaissant I believe that Jon Camp is involved with this variant, Annie lives in Pennsylvania so a reconnection is unlikely.

One of my favorite early Renaissance songs with Annie was the first one she recorded, "Prologue" from the 1972 Prologue album. The last song on the album also really showcases her vocal talent, "Rajah Khan" with equally impossible vocalizing I didn't know existed.

The band that guided me through my college years in Middelburg, The Netherlands... one winter evening I walked to a girlfriend living on the snowy canals. When I got there she had Turn of a friendly card on the recordplayer. Totally blew me away, the angelic voice of Annie Haslam, never heard that ... went on to discover the other albums, been a fan ever since. Unfortunately never saw the band live

Hi, Guys, Its really ok to get emotional I saw Renaissance live in '76 was blown away back then, on a different musical planet to all the other many bands I saw back in the 70s, and every time I listen including here with you guys, I also get emotional many other fans do too. Annie is/ was a trained Opera Singer with a 5 octave range, and some say reaches into 6 on some songs, and along with John Touts classical piano taking the lead so yes they truly are a Unique Band. Annie has said in interviews Renaissance are Prog but sub genre Symphonic Rock Inspired by Original Classical. Really looking forward to your reaction to Ashes are Burning live '75 Carnegie Hall, I think on this song Annie reaches E6.

In 1973 I heard Annie Haslam sing for the first time. I was overwhelmed! She was so outstanding and she made me feel like I was in a beautiful dream. I was 17 years old and she had such an impression on me. No one's singing could affect me like that. She was so original and unique. She was so different and she made me feel like I could journey to this other world or place where I could release all my sadness just by hearing the sound of her voice. It was pure escapism and I knew that I must be feeling her soul or better described as what she felt when singing...and that was projecting on to me and taking me away from the sadness of my youth.. She was so meaningful to me...❤

Congratulations, you have achieved Level One in Renaissance Awareness. To complete Level Two you should visit both ends of the Renaissance spectrum - first Ocean Gypsy and then Black Flame - preferably in that order. Then you will be ready for Level Three: Scheherazade (live version as noted below). IMO their masterpiece. Don't be put off by the length - it is worth the journey. Love watching you guys learn to appreciate the music we have loved for decades. Peace.

This was spectacular. I love music with tempo and chord changes which are unexpected, and that voice is beautiful. Wonderfully composed. And it didn't hurt that some of the passages sound like Genesis. :)

If you haven’t yet, check out “At The Harbour” from the Ashes Are Burning album. It starts out with John Tout playing Debussy’s “La Cathédrale Engloutie” (The Sunken Cathedral), which really sets the mood. The song is heartbreakingly sad and beautiful, and nobody but Annie Haslam could have pulled it off. And while Jon Camp (bass) always gets mentioned as being an underrated musician, John Tout gets even less recognition than he deserves. I guess that when there’s no debauchery, drama, and excess linked to you nobody knows who you are.

Yes, that song is hauntingly beautiful. Never get tired of listening to it with the amazing intro and outro that complement it perfectly.
