Do you know why you are only getting 5 amps to your batteries? You should be able to easily recharge fully while motoring and using your fridge. I would see if a separate heavy fused and probably regulated wire to your trailer batts could work. I use propane over night for heat and fridge It seems to last a long time.

How long does one of your 20lbs of propane last you guys? We just burned through a 30lb at J Tree, but we were using our heater a lot. Seemed a bit fast to me!

Been RV’ing my whole life (50+ years) frig on propane even when traveling except when plugged in. With no furnace the 30lb tanks last months. Ordered the 12volt frig in our 2020 Jayco that Thor decided to cancel the build on after 9 months of stringing us along. Ended up buying a 2021 Winnebago 2831RB with the double door 12 cf propane/electric frig. The large size pushes the absorption technology. Still wish we had the 10cf 12v compressor fridge!

Just a observation, I have a similar rig with 40 gallon gray and black tanks. The gray tank will fill up very quickly even if you limit showers. We use a plastic basin in the sink and pour the water into the toilet after dishes to spread the water more evenly between the tanks especially if you cook a lot.

The fridge in our ORV 20FQ sips propane. It really doesn't use much at all. Propane fridges are really efficient! Use it and you'll see.. you don't need a 12 volt!

I got an iPad Air several years ago for free when buying an iPhone 6, but didn’t find it to be very functional as a replacement for a Windows laptop …… until I attached an external keyboard to it. That transformed the iPad into kind of a hybrid laptop ….. with benefits. I synced it up with the iPhone so it acts as just a large iPhone. With it I can make and receive phone calls, and since it is cellular then my lady can surf the net while we’re rolling don the highway. My latest iPad/iPhone configuration is an iPad 9.7” and an iPhone XS. Most of the people I interact with have iOS devices. iOS is bullet-proof and Apple’s technical support is second to none.

Look at a DC to DC charger Victron or Renogy and run some larger #2 cables from your alternator/battery to an Anderson connectors and on to your trailer and batteries. You can charge the batteries while you drive.
@jeroldharter
@jeroldharter Жыл бұрын
Great video, enjoy your posts. We have a similar rig - 24RLS Titanium with 600 A/hr BB batteries and Victron inverter. Also upgraded to the 12V fridge - huge improvement! A couple of comments: those X-Chock style chocks are not sufficient alone so be careful about that; a DC-DC charger is essential for a battery bank that large, especially if you want to avoid plugging in to charge while on the road; the most solar you can get on the roof is ~1000W which is not enough alone for your big battery bank - you will want to add DC-DC charger and maybe an external 200W solar panel depending on your style; you don't really need a generator unless you plan on doing a lot of winter camping or plan on using the AC on batteries often; a soft-start is a good add on, esp if you want to run AC on batteries. As for tank usage boondocking: outdoor showers save a ton of gray tank space; wiping down dishes thoroughly with paper towels saves a lot of dishwater; not putting toilet paper in the black tank saves space as well as helping keep tank sensors working (we use all the TP we want and put it in brown paper lunch bags that then go in the trash).

If you don't have a fridge fan it helps. Also leave a gap on the inside walld of the fridge which helps with cooling to allow cold air to circulate with a fan on. Just to help. Like your trailer, and love desert also. Take care.

i am not sure why you are opposed to using propane for that fridge. it is designed for it. when boondocking for months at at time and driving down the road we do run our propane to keep the fridge running. we also have a large inverter/solar system that helps that out. good luck with all your adjustments, safe travels.

Hello Chris and Aaron. All of this video is awesome! I am sooo happy you have a bigger rig….and with its lifted features, you still will be able to get deeper into the back country, Yes! AZ is really an incredible place! I feel your pull to it, Aaron. When we lived in CO previously, back in the early 90s, we were going to the desert very frequently. Mostly UT, which did not have the Saguaro cacti…..but still awesome. Someone gave me Edward Abbey’s “ Desert Solitaire” book in the 80s, and I have read it many many times. Can’t wait to see how you two continue to equip your rig! I will be taking close notes! Dang it….all of those things that we overlook when heading out to boondock. I hadn’t put any thought into the power it takes to use the level jacks and tongue jack. That is mainly due to our previous camper was a 34 footer total length….and we exclusively camped in campgrounds on the east coast. Arrive to the site…plug it in….and deploy and operate everything off of shore power! Chris…that is an awesome find for the screen protector! Safe travels!

Great video you guys seem to be getting into the swing of things. I second this idea. With the dual batteries in your truck with the diesel I would get a DC/DC charger to help charge faster when driving and you could also plug the truck in and run it to charge the batteries in a pinch if needed when parked until you get your solar setup. I am currently working out my system for my install when I get my trailer and have included this as one of the first items on my list. Hoping you have a video soon on a your inverter install. Very curious on how you did that.

That evaporator style frig uses heat to work that's how it runs on propane. When you run it on 110v it uses electric heat and has a constant draw on the power source.

I have a 2021 Nash 22h that I full time in. I spent 15K having 400 amps of BB Lithium batteries, 820 watts of solar and a 3,000 watt inverter installed and spent months finding someone to correct the mess the first company made of the install. Now that its working properly I have learned of its short coming. recently I experienced several days of heavy cloud cover and finally had to break out the Honda 2200. What I learned is that solar and Lithium are great but a good old fossil fuel generator is a must for a backup.

I’m with you when it comes to AZ. We’re wintering here ourselves right now, and we love it. We will be spending time near the Saguaro national forest in the next few months and can’t wait! Love your setup - looks like it will suit your needs perfectly for the time being. We used propane RV fridges for years and have had no issues with them, and I actually wanted one in our current RV in order to extend boondocking stays, but ours came with a residential fridge which will only last overnight on the batteries b4 we have to start the generator. Love the fridge itself as long as we have electric hookups & works fine off inverter traveling down the road w/o draining batteries. But so much for simple boondocking w/o a generator, which we haven’t done yet since we just got it end of summer. Not sure what the solution will be; perhaps lots of solar. Or even changing out to propane fridge since we already have a huge propane tank. Safe travels!

Fun! We loved Saguaro National Park and that southern area! Yeah I hear it takes a lot to run the large residential fridges for sure. We have friends that have one with 600 amps of lithium and about 1800 watts of solar. No problems in sun of course, but overnight it puts a dent in the batteries but are back up to full before noon. Cloudy weather can be a problem!

Hi…my wife and I also have a 22FQS which we pull with an F350. We boondock almost exclusively and some places are definitely nicer than others. I also look for trash, empty beer cans collocated with empty shell casings, etc. when choosing a spot for the night. One thing you might consider….I generally will never disconnect the trailer when boondocking. You never know when you might need to make a quick exit. Just a thought. Be careful and take care.

regarding the fridge, our last rig had a 12 volt compressor fridge, I did like it with the Lithium/Multiplus/solar, our new rig has a fridge like yours, I run the propane when parked without electrical hookups, I dont worry much about not running it when driving, it stays pretty cold. Im a bit torn, I think I would prefer the 12 volt again having 630 ah of lithium and 1200 watts on the roof, but I struggle to spend almost a grand replacing a perfectly good fridge that in my case matches the cabinet colors

I hear ya....it's too bad you don't sometimes get the option to just get a 12 volt from the factory. No holes in the roof and side wall is important to me.... It's proving pretty difficult to sell ours and we'll obviously not get full price for it. But, I always loved having our 12 volt fridge in the van....always on...always perfect temp... and no worries. Thanks for sharing.

We boondock in the same basic area and move around east from there. Like yourselves we really like the area and the space. We spent a few days at the same park in Cottonwood. They had just opened as a new park about 2 years ago when the "virus" first hit. It had rained for the week before so the ground was soft and not enough compacted rock. Our trailer sunk about 4"-5" and we had to dig out when we left. One of the park attendants helped. She may be petite (very heavy Texas accent) but could really swing a shovel.

I think you would find an Equalizer hitch easier especially for off road sites. We have used ours in very uneven sites in state and national parks and you have those big bars to use as leverage when unhitching. Also I try to get truck and trailer in same "plane" with boards or levelers. Even if they are both unlevel it is easier to unhitch and hitch up that way. Nice videos! Congrats on new rig!

Your videos are the only ones I look for each Sunday and feel like I missed something when you don't post until later in the week. I enjoy the two of you and your positive outlook on things. I'm glad you have the space, but with each video so far, still find myself glad I'm staying with my Class B. The lack of mobility, risks of incident when pulling, added set up time, inability to access things while driving, and less vehicle charging of the trailer batteries while driving still have me a die hard for the smaller Class B. I'll keep watching. It will be interesting to see where you end up with solar. I have 1100 Watts on my Class B by being able to slide them out when boon-docking...with 800 Watts available all the time. I'm guessing you will have more
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff! Yes, all very valid points for the class B and the same that drew us to our van as well! Impressive solar set up you hav eon your van! So far the most we can put up on our RV ( without slides) is 1200 watts. We only had 300 watts in our van so 4x sounds pretty good!

We still prefer our 2 way fridge. It uses very little propane and stays extremely cold without phasing our lithium batteries. If you had it cold to start from the RV park, you would have seen a big difference in your power usage. We rarely use our inverter, only for charging cameras, computers, and bike batteries, and an occasional appliance. The truck won't do much for charging, but once you get the proper solar panels, you'll be fine. Love those skies! We'll be out West again in a couple weeks. Can't wait!

Look into Redarc dc to dc charger. It will charge your batteries way faster while driving and you could hook it up to solar.

You should not use the wheel xchocks before leveling your rv! Possibility of putting unwanted stress on tires and suspension! Also no t meant to use alone without proper wheel chocks! Can pick up at harbor freight relatively cheap!
@IreneIronTravels

That's good to know. I tried reading and researching about that I thought most said you can use the x chocks as wheel chocks.....but they don't really fit our tires so I should just get 4 of the standard chocks.

I have the exact same tire chucks, and a 2019 24 RLS ORV. I have to make sure the trailer is completely straight in line with the truck before both chucks will fit in both sides. Even the slightest angle and one side won’t fit. You probably already figured that out but if you haven’t, there you go

I’ve got 400 amps of Battle Born’s and 840 watts of solar so on sunny days I have no problem traveling using the inverter but not so good on cloudy rainy days. Not good for overnight either. My fridge pulls 330 watts and probably averages a 75% duty cycle.

Hey Guys. You look so happy in this video. That AZ sunset is so beautiful. When are you going to be in CA? Where you planning to hang out. I highly recommend check out some of the beach RV spot. We've been having 70 degrees this week. And yes, we do and can go to the beach in December. If you're going to be in the Los Angeles area. Lmk! I'd love to meet up and recommend places to see. Safe travel! Oh, BTW stay away from San Francisco! Not a safe place .

We are new to rv’ng and have been subscribers to your channel for a long time escaping the realities of COVID - thank you so much. My wife and I love your style - a class act. We, too, chose the Anderson WD hitch and absolutely love it. The key is to check that your trailer and tow vehicle is aligned by sighting through mirrors. Raising the Jack higher if chains are tight to loosen is the other thing. You don’t have to be perfect. . You covered leveling your new trailer. When you leveled your Springer, how perfect did you need to be? Do I have to have the bubble centered (to plumb) line? How close to centered bubble is good enough? Thank you for your response.

@@IreneIronTravels We use both the black rubber ones mentioned below by @Celestial and X chocks on our 22FQS. I've found with the auto leveling, the suspension relaxes when it goes up and the tires can spread slightly, so, if I X chock first, they come loose during auto leveling. I now use the rubber chocks first, auto level, then X chock. I reverse this during take down. probably overkill, but I have them both, so ... :-) And I'll add, auto level is the bomb. I love it. So easy. Just make sure you are fairly level side-to-side first or it can and will lift the tires completely off the ground on the low side. 😬

Been watching you two for a year and you inspired my wife and I to purchase a new truck and trailer almost identical to your F350 ORV combo for 3 season part time travel. I have two questions for either of you about the total truck trailer length and brand of tow vehicle and trailer. #1 - Have you ever wished to have gone shorter or longer in total length (49 - 50') of your combo given potential parking constraints or campground size restrictions? #2 - Have you been satisfied with your choice of tow vehicle brand and trailer brand, would you change either of those choices now after living with both for awhile? Thanks much, D Lee

Love to see your journey! Thanks for sharing. Curious why you are not wanting to use the propane refrigerator? We boondock almost all the time and have run the propane fridge for weeks and not run out of propane. Our ORV has two 30# tanks and they last a long time - even when running some heat. One 170W solar panel and 2 regular deep cycle 12V batteries and we rairly run our 2000W Yamaha generator.

Thanks for watching! We've always had a 12v compressor fridge and loved the efficiency, performance, and no worries with it always on and running. No frozen veggies or spoiled meat. The norcold is freezing our eggs now! We like the idea of converting everything to electric and running off of solar. It is nice to have those 30lb tanks though! 😀

Lived many years in Yuma, AZ not far from where you are camping…lots of great Mexican restaurants down there…need to check out Chili Peppers and Monster Taco!! Just curious why you weren’t using your frig? They barely take any LP. If you’re boondocking keep your frig on LP all the time and you’ll be fine.
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 2 жыл бұрын
That's for the reco's! LP fridges are efficient for sure, but with the electrical system we have a DC fridge will be able to run 24/7 without worries. Save the propane for heating and cooking and safe a few trips throughout the year. We also feel the compressor fridges cool more efficient and evenly....so you don't get frozen veg or spoiled meat. Recently our RV fridge has been freezing our eggs!

I'm Back ! Your losing your refrigerator efficiency by *NOT* having the freezer full, I use drinking water and fill square lunch meat plastic containers over 3/4 full of water. Then stack then as needed to fill in all the empty space in the freezer ! You cut your energy consumption.way down. Also you got Ice then you need it for drinking or a cooler.!

@IreneIronTravels

So far so good. Travels nice and very little movement. You're right spare in the truck. Not too happy about that as it takes up a good chunk of the bed. I thought I might be able to put it behind the propane tanks on the tounge where the batteries were, but it doesn't fit. Maybe a under frame carrier will be in our future...... but ya everything is working out great so far.
