Can you believe this, we haven't used this homemade crane very long and already it is broken. The 3000lb Champion winch we bought has failed already. This will delay us for a day or so..:-(

Glad you actually showed this. Some people get so complacent and even walk under such things nonchalantly thinking it is all good...until it isn't. Never ever, EVER trust mechanical assemblies just because of their ratings or that it worked okay last time they used it. Thumbs Up!

Have a friend who when constructing anything he always seems to over construct, when asked he would say it doesn’t do no harm to double up, so if he had been needing a winch and 3000lbs was adequate he would have bought a 6000lb one, as he said “ just to be sure I have no problems down the line” 😜

Hello Brian, I was hoping I did go over and above what I needed...these logs weigh 400lbs each, skidding two lengths at a time = 800lbs, add friction... another 700lbs . 800lbs +700lbs = 1500lbs ... 1500lbs x 2 = 3000lbs I hope my math makes sense to you? Thanks again. You have a great evening. Cheers!

My first thought is that a winch is made for pulling and not lifting. Perhaps you could reconsider your options before putting another winch on. You wont be much of a lumberjack if you get hurt or maimed. Hope to see you staying safe. Especially when out in the woods away from emergency services.

Hello Matthew, back years ago I took a hoisting course to repair over head cranes in a welding shop...winches don't care if they're pulling vertical or horizontal...this is why you never see only for flat pulling on the box of a winch, they also never say this winch can also pull a car up hill or out of a ditch ;-) Thanks again. Cheers.
@oldaxehead6552 жыл бұрын
@@SkinnersOffGrid That is simply wrong information. Winches are for pulling, hoists are for lifting. The instructions clearly state 1 minute of work time needs 5 minutes of rest time. Deadlifting logs, and holding them in the air for extended periods of time is not using the winch properly at all. I like what you do, but you are wrong here. For what you're doing I'd recommend a 10,000lb winch.

OH NO!... WINDY DAY!... Ya not safe...SUM TING WONG...STRIPPED A GEAR.... thanks 4 video. be kind.
Maybe you could have double roped with a pulley block for the main pull point to the top of the crane, to get extra out of that chyna garbage winch. Interesting though, I have a similar small commercial, type winch, on a crane made for either back of truck trays or trailer mount, lets see how long it lasts, I think I will be using the pulley block for sure after seeing this. TY!!
That winch was probably made in a Chinese factory by a worker named Lao Zhe.

You really want to read the comments and find a construction person or somebody who uses it a lot. Or just buy a name brand. You use it a lot more than most people ever will. This is why Warn Winches cost more. There are other good brands. I would not trust my health and safety to Harbor Freight or TSC products. I buy gloves, tarps and magnets there. The tarps are not too good either. The gloves I really like! Never purchased a single power tool there. I don't care how cheap priced they are.... In the last 2-3 years they do have some new products that seem better than the older stuff BUT it cost more too.

You probably need to find something with a better brake on it. That winch doesn't appear to be up to the task of handling a dead load. It seems to lift just fine but the brake isn't designed to slowly lower loads like this. Realistically it's designed to pull an ATV out of a hole. When it's going down the brake has to support that 400lb load while slipping the entire time so it can move. It's not designed to do that. It's only designed to pull.
@SkinnersOffGrid8 ай бұрын
Hello, thanks..this winch had a factory defect. It was replaced under warranty and has worked great since we changed it a few years ago. Cheers!

Wow! I have a similar (Harbor Freight) winch on my car trailer. I did not like the sound of it from the start. The first time I used it the cable bunched up and I had to dismantle it. I discovered extremely small, crudely made, die cast Chinesium gears. Since then I have added a snatch block and doubled the line. If you do get an exact replacement I hope you might do the same. I'm happy that you were not hurt. Cheap Communist Chinese stuff comes with a price. Have you thought about trussing the boom on your crane like an engine hoist? They have more lawyers than quality control. I hope that you can find a better one, maybe a Warn Winch as they held up for me. I used them on small wrecker truck beds that had a automatic and no place to put a pto on it so it was electric or nothing. Its just a idea but if you get another one of theirs, maybe double the pick power by adding one more pulley at the tong and then run the line back up to the jib boom so you don't lose distance to pull or other. I seen you yard the trees in the bush and had a worry then but figured to keep my mouth out of it. I really do not wish to offend anyone.... just an idea

Typical champion,from my experience,first thing they will probably say is those winches aren't designed to be a lifting device or hold a load regardless of it's capacity lol
@josephbrannum57463 жыл бұрын
You have the wrong equipment, a winch is not made for over head loading as it will not hold the load. A hoist has a load brake/ hold made in it, also as Wilbur Finnigan said use a snatch block as it will double your power But it will be half your speed. If you can't get a hoist then go as big as you can on the next winch. Just know that a winch is not made for overhead loading , take care and have a safe day Joe
@SkinnersOffGrid3 жыл бұрын
Hello Joseph, This does have a brake in it. Plus The cable on the drum don't know the difference. Do they make winches for only pulling on the flat... or can they be used to pull a log up a hill? :-( Thanks again. You have a great day. Cheers!
@AndrewBrowner3 жыл бұрын
@m9 ovich i recently took apart and fixed a 12k rough country winch, a cheap china one but much larger than this, the brake mechanism was a couple cones that pushed towards each other using this cam profile and the cones seperated 3 pieces of brake fiber material that jammed against the inside of the drum, when torque was sent back though it from the motor that spread back apart and let pressure off the brake segments but any pull from the line end not being taken by the motor would spread these segments and jam directly against the drum so even a stripped gear shouldnt overide the break could be a different system though, winches in general have amazingly tight tolerances on these brakes i dont exactly understand how i would think thered need to be atleast an 1/8 turn of the drum to spin these brakes out into action but it seems they work almost the instant the motor stops reeling in the brake catches its not like the winch lets out a inch or two of line before the brake applies
@josephbrannum57463 жыл бұрын
A winch is made only for pulling, It has a break but it is nor made so it can hold a load as you found out. If you look in the owners manual it should say something like " Not for over head use" or something along that line . A Hoist is made so that it can hold the full load at a complete stop and at load rate for as long as you may want/ need it to. You can use a hoist for pulling but it is not what it is made for. Go with the next size up winch, use a block when lifting and don"t get under the load, But know that you are using something that could get you at some point if you let it. Not telling you what to do only that there is a difference between a winch and a hoist and there use. Be safe,
@SkinnersOffGrid3 жыл бұрын
Hello Joseph. Yes the brakes are different, I took a hoisting course years ago to repair chain blocks, come alongs and over head cranes...my point is using the winch this way should have made no difference why the gears stripped. A 3000lb winch can easily lift a 400lb log easy and the brake will hold, I mean for crying out loud, I've used them all my life dragging vehicles up on steep trailers and it never hurt them, it's not like this my first time using a winch :-(

Well thank you..this is a great compliment, we still have the 310 Case that I plan on getting going again someday. It would be nice if someone on here could point me towards a good winch company. PS. This is also why I won't do review videos on something unless I think it will stand up under our conditions ;-) Thanks again. You have a great day. Cheers!

So apparently the 3000 lbs. is all that winch is good for, it's not a capacity rating, it's a life expectancy

Maybe the 3000 lb rating means something different Cecil. I don't know. Like maybe it's like 3000 total accumulated pounds. Sorry for the misfortunes today.

@Autigers 2013 - Did you read my complete comment? Lighten up Francis! Cecil knows I am joking around. A lot of my comments are joking around, you will get the same thing from me in person. I make fun of myself and the people around me. It's all in good nature.

The problem with China winches is there is now grease in the gearbox.

I think as you pulled them on the ground to the trailer you might have stressed the gears it sounded like it was struggling

Hello fred, that shouldn't have made a difference. Most atv's weigh over 800 lbs...get the stuck in mud up to their axles and that's a lot harder pull than an 800 lb log skidding on moss...with me helping it even. I think it was a factory defect. Thanks again. Cheers.
