Can you believe this, we haven't used this homemade crane very long and already it is broken. The 3000lb Champion winch we bought has failed already. This will delay us for a day or so..:-(

Glad you actually showed this. Some people get so complacent and even walk under such things nonchalantly thinking it is all good...until it isn't. Never ever, EVER trust mechanical assemblies just because of their ratings or that it worked okay last time they used it. Thumbs Up!

Have a friend who when constructing anything he always seems to over construct, when asked he would say it doesn’t do no harm to double up, so if he had been needing a winch and 3000lbs was adequate he would have bought a 6000lb one, as he said “ just to be sure I have no problems down the line” 😜

Hello Brian, I was hoping I did go over and above what I needed...these logs weigh 400lbs each, skidding two lengths at a time = 800lbs, add friction... another 700lbs . 800lbs +700lbs = 1500lbs ... 1500lbs x 2 = 3000lbs I hope my math makes sense to you? Thanks again. You have a great evening. Cheers!

My first thought is that a winch is made for pulling and not lifting. Perhaps you could reconsider your options before putting another winch on. You wont be much of a lumberjack if you get hurt or maimed. Hope to see you staying safe. Especially when out in the woods away from emergency services.

Hello Matthew, back years ago I took a hoisting course to repair over head cranes in a welding shop...winches don't care if they're pulling vertical or horizontal...this is why you never see only for flat pulling on the box of a winch, they also never say this winch can also pull a car up hill or out of a ditch ;-) Thanks again. Cheers.
@oldaxehead655

@@SkinnersOffGrid That is simply wrong information. Winches are for pulling, hoists are for lifting. The instructions clearly state 1 minute of work time needs 5 minutes of rest time. Deadlifting logs, and holding them in the air for extended periods of time is not using the winch properly at all. I like what you do, but you are wrong here. For what you're doing I'd recommend a 10,000lb winch.

Maybe you could have double roped with a pulley block for the main pull point to the top of the crane, to get extra out of that chyna garbage winch. Interesting though, I have a similar small commercial, type winch, on a crane made for either back of truck trays or trailer mount, lets see how long it lasts, I think I will be using the pulley block for sure after seeing this. TY!!

Those winches are not very good. You kinda get what you pay for. Yesterday you were working it pretty hard when you were pulling the long logs to the trailer. That's probably what wreaked it and now it just gave up. Looks like if you are going to use it to skid with you are going to need a lot stronger one. Also I would buy a good named brand like a Warren. They might be a lot more money. But when it comes to safety it will be worth it. Take care my friends. TTYL!!😀😀❤❤

i had a similar winch on a similar trailer, and looked back one day to find the whole motor assembly missing, just the real and selector left bolted to the jib, the bolts that held the motor on backed out and eventually snapped.. contacted them they sent me out the parts but they didnt fit together properly ive had great luck with Smitty bilt winches i beat the tar out of them and they keep working but thats for the 9500lb+ ones they were 340$ canadian at 4wheel parts when i got mine, idk if they make any smaller units, lots of people selling 2k-3.5k Warn winches that came on their atv's for cheap usually need a new line, maybe a solenoid though just keep an eye on marketplace/kijiji if you bought this new at canadian tire theyll swap it out no problem sometimes it takes 3 or 4 tries to get a good tool from them swapping it out over and over to get one thats not a lemon.. beats paying quadruple the price though for a new Warn

Winches definitely vary in quality. :/ It’s hard to judge by customer comments because the truth is most people don’t even use their winch or barely use it or use it once or twice. You really want to read the comments and find a construction person or somebody who uses it a lot. Or just buy a name brand. You use it a lot more than most people ever will. I have one of my ATV I’ve used maybe three times in 10 years. Lol

This is why Warn Winches cost more. There are other good brands. I would not trust my health and safety to Harbor Freight or TSC products. I buy gloves, tarps and magnets there. The tarps are not too good either. The gloves I really like! Never purchased a single power tool there. I don't care how cheap priced they are.... In the last 2-3 years they do have some new products that seem better than the older stuff BUT it cost more too.

You probably need to find something with a better brake on it. That winch doesn't appear to be up to the task of handling a dead load. It seems to lift just fine but the brake isn't designed to slowly lower loads like this. Realistically it's designed to pull an ATV out of a hole. When it's going down the brake has to support that 400lb load while slipping the entire time so it can move. It's not designed to do that. It's only designed to pull.

You do understand 3,000 lbs means it should be able to pull a moveable 3000 lbs object, or maybe add 3,000 lbs worth of force to pull a vehicle out of a bad situation, no one should ever do thing with a standard winch unless they like wasting money, but I do love the ingenuity!

Wow! I have a similar (Harbor Freight) winch on my car trailer. I did not like the sound of it from the start. The first time I used it the cable bunched up and I had to dismantle it. I discovered extremely small, crudely made, die cast Chinesium gears. Since then I have added a snatch block and doubled the line. If you do get an exact replacement I hope you might do the same. I'm happy that you were not hurt. Cheap Communist Chinese stuff comes with a price. Have you thought about trussing the boom on your crane like an engine hoist? Just a thought from an old railroad worker. Hi to Heather and stay safe.

I figured that's why you used a power winch. I've never been a fan of less than high dollar winches because for me they always seemed to develop problems like what you're having. I'd guess that the ratchet pawl in your winch isn't working now. I might consider putting a cheap chain fall hoist onto the end of the boom if I couldn't get the power winch operational.

I believe your math Cecil. I also agree that the chinese think out of sight and out of mind. They know that ninety percent won't try to warrantee the junk so they are still ahead. They have more lawyers than quality control. I hope that you can find a better one, maybe a Warn Winch as they held up for me. I used them on small wrecker truck beds that had a automatic and no place to put a pto on it so it was electric or nothing. Its just a idea but if you get another one of theirs, maybe double the pick power by adding one more pulley at the tong and then run the line back up to the jib boom so you don't lose distance to pull or other. I seen you yard the trees in the bush and had a worry then but figured to keep my mouth out of it. I really do not wish to offend anyone.... just an idea

You have the wrong equipment, a winch is not made for over head loading as it will not hold the load. A hoist has a load brake/ hold made in it, also as Wilbur Finnigan said use a snatch block as it will double your power But it will be half your speed. If you can't get a hoist then go as big as you can on the next winch. Just know that a winch is not made for overhead loading , take care and have a safe day Joe

@m9 ovich i recently took apart and fixed a 12k rough country winch, a cheap china one but much larger than this, the brake mechanism was a couple cones that pushed towards each other using this cam profile and the cones seperated 3 pieces of brake fiber material that jammed against the inside of the drum, when torque was sent back though it from the motor that spread back apart and let pressure off the brake segments but any pull from the line end not being taken by the motor would spread these segments and jam directly against the drum so even a stripped gear shouldnt overide the break could be a different system though, winches in general have amazingly tight tolerances on these brakes i dont exactly understand how i would think thered need to be atleast an 1/8 turn of the drum to spin these brakes out into action but it seems they work almost the instant the motor stops reeling in the brake catches its not like the winch lets out a inch or two of line before the brake applies

A winch is made only for pulling, It has a break but it is nor made so it can hold a load as you found out. If you look in the owners manual it should say something like " Not for over head use" or something along that line . A Hoist is made so that it can hold the full load at a complete stop and at load rate for as long as you may want/ need it to. You can use a hoist for pulling but it is not what it is made for. Go with the next size up winch, use a block when lifting and don"t get under the load, But know that you are using something that could get you at some point if you let it. Not telling you what to do only that there is a difference between a winch and a hoist and there use. Be safe,

Hello Joseph. Yes the brakes are different, I took a hoisting course years ago to repair chain blocks, come alongs and over head cranes...my point is using the winch this way should have made no difference why the gears stripped. A 3000lb winch can easily lift a 400lb log easy and the brake will hold, I mean for crying out loud, I've used them all my life dragging vehicles up on steep trailers and it never hurt them, it's not like this my first time using a winch :-(

Hello Joseph, I'm guessing you've never been round many older tow trucks in your life, some were just electric winch's doing the same job as my winch. Check out some videos on KZfaq. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJanfZSTscCtj2g.html Cheers!

I would like to ask why you didn't use a hoist rather than a winch? Most winches come with a warning they aren't built to work as a crane.

Hello Joe, when I was younger I worked for a towing company..we always used an electric winch mounted on the back of the boom. We would get about five years out of one before we had to replace them. Cheers!

@@SkinnersOffGrid Thankyou for answering me. I'm east of North Bay and plan to build a trailer like yours as I just got a Woodmill band saw mill and at 72 my days of swinging logs are long gone. After I retired I started making electric guitars so I like to quarter saw the wood plus it's cheaper. Thank you keep well.

Sounds like plastic gears, like a car window motor. I am thinking the winch didn't like dragging out logs. Maybe only for lift and load. But 3k lbs should be able to pull down a house.

Hello Geoffrey, yup I agree with you. these 8' logs weigh 400 lbs each, I've seen these 3000lb winches installed on 100lb plus side by side's and they pull out of mud up to the axles no problem. Thanks again. Cheers!

Maybe a good winch company will sponsor a winch, and you can put it through the Skinner Homestead test. And if it survives a season or two, you can give it the "Cecil seal of approval". I hope a company does that.

Hello Andrew, That would be awesome...You wouldn't happen to know any good winch companies eh? The trouble now is I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are all made by the same company :-( Thanks again. You have a great day. Cheers!

@@SkinnersOffGrid I don't know any, I usually see what you have and buy that cause I know it either works or it can be repaired. I have all the same equipment you do cause I follow this rule; if Cecil has it, it can be fixed or lasts. Thats why I got the case 310, built the same log trailer like yours, got the sawmill, and so on. Maybe someone here knows of a winch company thats up to the Skinner Homestead challenge. :)

Well thank you..this is a great compliment, we still have the 310 Case that I plan on getting going again someday. It would be nice if someone on here could point me towards a good winch company. PS. This is also why I won't do review videos on something unless I think it will stand up under our conditions ;-) Thanks again. You have a great day. Cheers!

So apparently the 3000 lbs. is all that winch is good for, it's not a capacity rating, it's a life expectancy

Maybe the 3000 lb rating means something different Cecil. I don't know. Like maybe it's like 3000 total accumulated pounds. Sorry for the misfortunes today.

Hello fred, that shouldn't have made a difference. Most atv's weigh over 800 lbs...get the stuck in mud up to their axles and that's a lot harder pull than an 800 lb log skidding on moss...with me helping it even. I think it was a factory defect. Thanks again. Cheers.
