Күн бұрынThere are over 50 Viking longships sailing the rivers of the world. Recently, the Princess and I were invited to attend the Viking River Cruises' naming ceremony for its seven brand new river cruise ships.
As part of that Viking Cruises event, we completed a three-day mini cruise onboard the brand new Viking longship, Viking Einar. We are now back and have a lot to report from our first ever river cruise, and specifically review Viking Cruises latest Viking long ship.
We have put everything together from this abbreviated Rhine River cruise in our latest video with our Viking River Cruise review and longship tour.
No matter which vessel you choose to sail in the fleet, all Viking longships have the same layout and setup. This enables the cruise line to deliver a reliable cruise experience no matter what part of the world that the ship is cruising.

I have taken the same Viking cruise twice...The cruise down (up) the Rhine. I was so impressed with the itinerary, the ship, the food and the staff, i wanted to do it again! It was as wonderful the second timeline as it was the first. The first time i went with my partner and we had a spectacular time. The second cruise i took with my granddaughter. A high school graduation gift from me to her. I was less ablebodied then and felt completely comfortable letting her takr the walking tours without me. I napped and she explored. We both had a super time. Thank you Viking.

My wife and I went on the Viking Hlin. It sailed from Amsterdam to Basil. It was the most wonderful experience (vacation wise) we ever had. Everything about the cruise (room, food, staff, tours, etc) was wonderful. I highly recommend this company. We are going on a Viking ocean cruise this winter down thru the Bahama's and are sooooo looking forward to it.

I have done four river cruises with Viking, The Rhine from Amsterdam to Budapest, the Danube from Bucharest to Budapest, The Yangtze in China and the Mekong in Vietnam. Every trip is fantastic!

Just returned from a float on the Danube from Nurnberg to Budapest with my spouse and two sons & daughter-in-law - kind of a family vacation. What a great experience!!! The ships are clean and well-appointed, as shown in the video, and the dining and the service that goes with it are first-class all the way. The crew went out of their way to be helpful and make you feel welcome & comfortable. The shore excursions are well organized (sometimes a bit rushed), but the tour guides speak very good English and all were very knowledgable about the cities or shore venue they were leading (most, if not all were long time residents of that area, and some appeared to be university faculty members who really knew the historical aspects of their particular excursions). All tour guides were equipped with a microphone and small radio transmitter, while each guest had a radio receiver and earpiece to listen in to the narration while on the move. That made sightseeing much easier, and you could cover more ground that way without missing out on the narrations. Overall a great experience - would do it again in a heartbeat!

We did the Danaube on a Viking longboat - nothing but praise for the cruise, the staff, and the food. It was the most enjoyable cruise we have been on.

Our entire family/8members took the Rhine cruise. LOVED IT! Food and staff are outstanding and friendly. We had 2 teenagers with us and they became the stars of the cruise with other guests. They were at a different dinner table/family every meal. Plan to go again!

The wife and I are preparing to go on our 7th river cruise, all of which have been on Viking. There are other cruise lines, but none can compare to the Viking service, and tours. Aboard ship, the staterooms are very comfortable, and the food is exceptional. We decided long ago that all our cruises would be with Viking.

Wife and I took the Christmas Markets cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest in 2016 and it was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend an extension either before or after. We extended for two extra days in Budapest and that was worth it. The service on the longboats is second to none. Its the service and attitude of the staff at every level which sets Viking apart from their competition. The small size of the riverboats makes it comfortable without feeling stuffed. If you've considered a Viking River cruise, do it. You won't be disappointed.

I am not a person for organized vacations or ocean cruises, but I really liked the river cruise. My wife and I and our friends did the Basel- Amsterdam tour in November of 2017 for our 25th anniversaries . Good food , small crowd , nice, short tours and when you look out of the window you see something else than just ocean water. I was 51 at the time and probably the youngest guest. Hope to do the Russian tour some day.

My wife and I did the Basel to Amsterdam cruise in September of 2019 and enjoyed every minute of it. We had both lived in Europe as military brats and were a bit wary of group travel, but we can't say enough about this cruise, the meals, the staff, and accommodations. This video makes me want to do it again.

Cruising on the Viking Gefjon in June of 2016 was the BEST Vacation n our LIVES!! Amsterdam to Budapest with a 3 day stayover in Budapest to meet family that lives there was absolutely UNREAL!

My wife and I did the Rhine river from Amsterdam to Basel a few years ago and loved every minute of it. The small number of passengers and the service made it the best cruise we have taken. Would love to do another one.

Second and third the positive comments. Took a Viking cruise (on the Viking Magni) up the Danube from Budapest to Passau, Germany. A totally first-class experience that left us exhilarated and exhausted on the flight home. We squeezed every drop out of that trip. The crew was amazing, the tour guides informative, and the food was amazing. Can't wait to book another!

My husband an I have experienced 3 Viking cruises. One on the Rhine. One on the Danube and a third on the yang tse in China. All were magical and the China trip also included land started in Beijing and also flight to xian to see the terra-cotta army museum and ongoing excavation. We then flew to chongching to board the ship and cruised the yang tse river. This was a longer than normal trip but we considered it a trip of a life time. And I dare say, it was the best trip I’ve ever experienced. We also have to mention, we had the best guide'. His name was Peter. He picked us up at the airport in Beijing and was with our group the entire time until he dropped us off the airport in Shanghai. If he’s still with Viking, greeting to you and all the best to you and your family. We were there around late summer 2019.

My husband and I took the Grand European Cruise with Viking in September 2014. It was magnificent! Actually BETTER than we anticipated. These Longships are truly beautiful but not pretentious. Vikings port tours are very nice to take and learn of the city or region you’re visiting. We loved this cruise so much almost five years ago, that we have reservations to cruise the Mediterranean this October...also with award-winning Viking Ocean Cruises! Can’t wait! ⚓️📸🍹🍝😍

I did go on a cruise up the Danube River with two other couples. It was without a doubt the greatest week of my life. Best vacation ever by a mile. I plan on doing it again once this covid virus runs its course. I've been to a lot of places, but Viking just plane has their act together. If I had to find something I didn't like or was disappointed in I couldn't do it. Fantastic company!

Just returned from the Budapest to Amsterdam river cruise. Loved every single moment. However, if you have mobility issues the excursions will be a challenge. Europe is covered with cobblestone, this makes walkers and wheelchairs impracticable. This is not Viking’s fault. It is the way Europe is.

Just returned from a Rhine River cruise 6/2/19. Purchased the Roughrider wheelchair to help traverse cobblestone areas. This wheelchair was excellent for touring Europe. Don't be scared off if you have a walking issue. Although, please understand that wheelchair use on a river cruise ship is not practical, and can be dangerous for other passengers in the event of an emergency. Just use the wheelchair for excursions.

We put the extra wide front wheel on wife’s Travel Scoot, to deal with cobblestones. But you need the later drum brakes, too!

We did the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel summer of 2019. Our experience was phenomenal, everything as described. Going to Portugal eventually, once the world gets a grip on the virus.

I just came back from the Danube tour yesterday, and love it. The only setback was the French belcony stateroom; it was too small for comfort. If I ever travel again on Viking, I will either upgrade it to the Veranda or downgrade it to the standard room. Both offer bigger rooms. Another option is to choose an accommodating roommate!

My wife and I did Viking's Rhine River cruise in November 2018. This was during record low water levels in the Rhine. Viking handled that expertly transferring us to another ship beyond the area that was non navigable. Everything in this review is spot on. I actually preferred Viking's long ship to the mega ship we did in the Caribbean. The long ship was wonderful but not over the top. We will do another Viking cruise some day.

@@tekay44 We also did several Windjammer Barefoot Cruises in the Caribbean (out of business now). They were 3 and 4 masters schooners. Very laid back. Only hit one big island with tons of shopping the rest were the smaller islands and lots of beach time. Fed you well but didn't pack you to the gills. Depending on ship 175-250 passengers. And a crew of about 50. You had a chance to meet everyone. Very laid back. I miss them.

We took a river cruise on Viking in 2017, the food was more than great, the service was spectacular, and ports very interesting and we took the black forest tour as an optional tour. they even upgraded us to a suite at no additional charge. we even took an ocean cruise this year, the difference, was the food was better on the river cruise, but then we got upgraded again at no charge.

Does Rhine go to Basel? I think it pours into North Sea at Rotterdam, south of Amsterdam.

Susan and I have done several of these and plan to do more. If you are a mature academic, aging intellectual or hard core student of the "castle and cathedral" tour, this is where you need to go. Bring your laptop and get a VPN and you can watch MSNBC, CNN, NYT and WaPo. if you have a subscription. You can, if you chose, mostly avoid people. Buy the "silver package" for beverages. The "long ships" are small...about 300 to 500 passengers. Perfect for us

Timothy Dingman - the capacity of the long ships is under 200 PAX. It’s written on the side of the ship, usually on the control tower. Ours were 190.

We enjoyed our river cruise from Budapest to Passau. We also did a Viking g ocean cruise from Spain to Greece. I honestly can’t say which one I liked best. They were both awesome!

I went on a Viking Cruise in 2015. I really enjoyed the cruise and the intimate atmosphere created by under 200 cruisers. We felt like we were traveling with all our friends! The Aquavit deck was much smaller than expected and we never managed to snag a table 🙁. I would love to do another one, but next time I might do one less excursion so that I can enjoy more time relaxing on the ship itself. The excursions can be tiring. By the time we returned to the ship there wasn’t a lot of down time to relax or have a drink before dinner.

Wife and I went on the Rhine Getaway Christmas Market Cruise in 2015 (Viking Hlin). Can't wait to go back. Cannot think of one negative aspect of the cruise, the ship, or the company. Worth every penny too.

Actually , I was a bit disappointed because it didn't snow at all You read correct. We were expecting a snowy Christmas atmosphere. It was cold, but we brought appropriate cold weather gear.

We love Viking River Cruise and will be going on another in 2 weeks. We go on the 1st or 2nd sailing of the season and have our rooms on level 1. This is how to have a lower price then the rest of the year sailing on Viking. We are not in our room very much and did not need a balcony. Plus, it is chilly in March and would not use it if we did book a room with a balcony. We loved the whole product that Viking provides and recommend it for everyone.

We went in 019 for 2week Grand River . Viking was most accommodating as i use a light electric wheelchair for distance . The river offered challenges for boarding the crew overcame . they got my chair on the upper deck numerous times easily - it weighs less than 50#. The food was what you wished u could cook like without the $$ .the tours tested my wife as a Flat lander . My Echair faired well . Cobblestones challenge most folks . the beds were welcoming nightly . Will we do MORE - 👍 yes 😀

I've been on 8 Viking European river cruises and one Viking ocean cruise. Fair warning, while the cruises are very good, they're not as good as they used to be. I started cruising with Viking in 2013 on a Danube river cruise and had four more cruises in the following four years. The first cruises were superb and addictive in their quality, but during a Grand European cruise in 2017 it became clear that Viking has new corporate management which is compromising Viking's quality. To be clear, the boats, staff and crew are still very good, but the structure of the cruises has suffered under the new management. You used to have a full day to half-day at each port, but the new management has added many side tours that force the boat's captain to waste precious hours offloading a handful of guests at odd and inappropriate ports. As an example, while on the Main river, for a tour of Wurzburg Germany, we had to debark the boat in the loading dock of a saw mill for a coach ride into town. The boat *should* have transited directly to Wurzburg where we would have walked straight into town. Later that cruise while en-route to Regensburg Germany, passengers had to debark the boat by crossing two coal barges on ramps that had been ad-hoc lashed together. My late wife and I decided to skip the included bus tour and stay with the boat into Regensburg. I still remember watching middle-aged and older passengers doddering across the jury-rigged ramps, amazed that no-one fell off into the river or onto a coal barge. The boat should have transited directly into Regensburg but was delayed because earlier that morning six guests debarked for a Salzburg side trip earlier that morning. Two years before that never would have happened.

Our cruise Amsterdam to Budapest was pleasant. Just letting you know you cannot use the top desk for days as you cruise under low bridges. On certain Rivers. Many days you are strapped to another Viking boat whilst docked not everyday. The brochure does not focus on this. The Juliette balcony is very tight. These comments are typical across all cruise lines not just Viking. Not recommended if you have mobility issues.

I took their Ukraine cruise in 2010. The ship wasn't nearly as fancy as this one, but the ports of call were very interesting--it included Crimea then-and the price was right.

Very good video. Not too fast or slow. Commentary not goofy. Good information. You could have included hours of dining, gratuity information, mobility accommodations and if certain iteneraries are seasonal. But all in all visually pleasing.

Same thing I was thinking. A lot of the footage *does* appear to be VRC-supplied. The second half of the video he just plays stock footage on a loop. (And I could be wrong, but it looks like Netherlands to me, which was not on his itinerary.)

The seating in the dining room is open seating. You can sit where you like. On the river ships, there is a single time for dinner, though you can go anytime during that period. There are tables for 2 or 4, as well as round tables that seat 6..

Institutional food, served in a cafeteria like environment. Crowded tours with old people and walkers. Everyone herded around like cattle. Sounds like a great experience to me. LOL

Interesting. If you submit a negative comment with specific examples of a very bad experience with Viking River Cruises it does not show up here. Same response as the two letters sent after a horrible river cruise with them, no response. This is obviously a Viking promo site.

A fair report, did the Budapest to Nuremberg trip in July this year, my only gripe was the BBC news chanel didn't work dispite a few requests for it to be looked at. Didn't watch much tele but a chanel not so US biased would have been nice. It didn't spoil my enjoyment that much as I've booked to do the Rhine tour next year.

A Viking river cruise is next on our agenda so this is a great insight into the Long ships. Their ocean cruses take this to the next level, I’ve done two other Viking Viking trips The Viking Home Land Cruise, and the Viking China tour land and river. Now hocked on Viking cruses.

If river water level is too low the cruise ship can't travel; if the water level is too high the ship cannot get under some bridge. We were lucky on our trip. It depends on the weather and season.

I am not a cruise person and have never cruised before. They just seemed like tacky floating casino playgrounds teeming with the kind of people who enjoy that sort of thing. River cruises really appeal to me though. Like others in this thread, I’m sold on Viking. Hopefully the ships will sail again soon.

Our Rhine trip was the best ever, cant wait for our next tour, unfortunately special deals and specials rarely apply to South African were a trip, all in, will cost the same as a small car.

We went in November along the Rhine. Cold but not freezing. Glad we only got the French Balcony cabin. Saved a few $ over a full balcony but still had the big window.

We took one Viking Cruise and never again. My wife and I like being together. Viking allows couples in terrible marriages to avoid each other.

I'm very concerned about an all you can eat, all you can drink cruise. Does this all-inclusive pricing attract a bunch of fat, drunks?

The “fat drunks” are on Carnival cruise line, not Viking. They would never pay the high price.

I really appreciate how to the point and thorough this review is. That's honestly hard to find on youtube. The only recommendation I would make is to record at 60fps so that the panning shots are smoother.

@@mooseyman74 The whole Viking concept is flawed. All-inclusive means cheap booze and comfort food. Two of the great delights of travel to Europe are experiencing local food and wine. Viking with their cafeteria style dining and lousy wines totally miss this.

Just took the Viking cruse from Budapest to Bucharest, never again with Viking! GREAT staff, but Viking I saw is trying to save money by giving you last minute changes to hotels to very low end ones. The tours included and paid ones were so bad we couldn't wait to return to the ship. One of the waiters said Viking cut their pay substantially. Just be careful.

Actually, we had two cruises in 2019 where Viking changed the hotels to the better; so it's not so cut and dried. Full disclosure, I prefer another line so I'm not a Viking shill. So far as the waiter's pay, I can't speak to that issue.

When I saw these ships and how long they are I can only imagine if you need to get somewhere on board how long you would have to walk down some hallway that probably has no windows.

Viking cruise ships have crashed into a lock at the start of the Danube for the 2nd this causing major disruption to other cruises and ruined holidays
