Ortlund continues to call icon veneration idolatry yet argues for his own knock-off brand of the real presence in the eucharist. It seems to me that if icon veneration is to be called idolatry, then it would follow that the Eucharist would be an even greater offense. It is, after all, according to him, a mere piece of bread that we Catholics say is the flesh of Our Lord. Why not say then that we are bowing and worshiping bread? He cannot attack the eucharist because he is aware there is no ambiguity on the subject from the fathers and martyrs of the faith. I cannot help but notice how hypocritical he is when arguing for his doctrines.

You don't need to adore something to be idolatrous. If I say my grandma is God but don't worry I don't worship her, is that not idolatry? Gavin is inconsistent.

The moment Ortland accepts icon veneration or the Eucharist is the moment he walks outside of his Baptist tradition. Then, he is looking for a job. A major life change.

@@td6425 The greater point is, in Christianity it would be the only legitimate form of idolatry there is, as people are bowing down and worshipping something as a God. Everything else (statues and icons) is just weasel words, semantics, and straw Manning.

@@matthewvelazquez2013 I was once in Gavin Ortland’s shoes. The only difference is that I was in a Baptist Bible College and not serving as an ordained minister at a Baptist church before I had I became a Catholic. Ortland doesn’t have that freedom. BUT, but, but, he is doing a good work by helping Baptists overcome their hatred and fear of Catholics. This is a good thing.

Brother, I have something I’d like to ask. I feel as though it’s been convicting me. The Lord God Jesus refers to Mary as “woman.” This has to be because that was what the female of Adam was called before the fall. It wasn’t until the fall that the female received a separate name. Right? And Mary is the ark of the new covenant (2 Samuel 6:9 and Luke 1.43). Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and John the Baptist leapt in the womb. He, as adult, says one is coming who is greater and will baptize in the name of the Holy Spirit. Is he speaking from experience based on what he experienced in the womb? Was he cleansed of sin in womb to become the baptizer and the greatest of anyone born of women (Luke 7:28)? The Church only celebrates 3 nativities, the Lord, Mary, and St John the Baptist. Just like to get your thoughts on that. Side note: the nativity of the child who leapt in the womb is celebrated on June 24, the same day Roe v Wade was overturned.

Gavin Ortlund continually displays dishonesty and a failure to critique a position from an intellectual and scholarly approach. He reads the Fathers and interprets them himself and doesn’t look at the other perspectives. He has tunnel vision to try to support his point. Very sad. Please pray for his soul to not go to eternal hell fire since he is outside of the Catholic Church. Hail Mary🙏

Imagine a doting Grandma. Her Grandaughter has graduated from college. Proud Grandma has a photo framed on the sideboard. As she dusts the sideboard she picks up the photo and kisses it. Does she think the photo is the grandaughter? Obviously not. But it is a reminder of the love she has for her grandaughter and the pride she has in the daughter's achievements. That's how we feel on viewing a picture of the saints, or an image of the crucifixion. No one thinks the image is a God to be worshipped.

I don't care how soft spoken and "charitable" a person is. When you speak against Mary you are of the Devil. It's crazy how Luther (the father of protestants) even said, [She is the] highest woman and the noblest gem in Christianity after Christ . . . She is nobility, wisdom, and holiness personified. We can never honor her enough. Still honor and praise must be given to her in such a way as to injure neither Christ nor the Scriptures. (Sermon, Christmas, 1531)

"Heretics, all of whom are children of the devil and who clearly bear the sign of God's reprobation, have a horror of the Hail Mary. I have a question… I’ve noticed the bulk of Marian dogmas are in response to heresies. You say there’s not a lot on this subject, but what change in Protestant doctrines was going on when this was made a dogma of the church?

Something to note on Chrysostom's Homilies on the Gospels, there is far more of a Pastoral Focus within his works. Often he would use harsh language and hypotheticals in general teach a point on Virtues rather than a point of Doctrine. If this can be demonstrated in other areas, this would explain his low Mariology in terms of his Hypotheticals, and could synthesise well with high Mariology elsewhere. I think if one took a study of his works to find an example of this technique being done with Christ or John the Baptist, or in some other situation where, if taken as purely Doctrinal, would be absurd. This also just generally makes sense, as while his Homilies on the Epistle follow a more explanatory and elaboratory element, is Homilies on the Gospels are uniquely extravagant, often dedicating Paragraphs to just a single concept within a verse. We see this just in the volume of Homilies, where his Homilies on Matthew are x3 times the size of that of his Homilies on Romans, despite The Gospel of Matthew only being about double the size of Romans. This would be a very good topic to research more on, one which I have neither the skills not resources to do.

31:00 isn't desiring to do something sinful a sin in itself? I guess it's possible that it isn't if someone is invincibly ignorant with regard to the action, and hence the matter of sin is present without the form. Maybe the weakness that St. John Chrysostom is referring to can be distinguished from sin in this way. That might explain why he thinks Jesus does not pass judgment on Mary.

At about the 40th minute mark they were talking about Loke. And how the soul of mary will be pierced by the death of her son and i'm a firm believer that that's sole of mary is the holy spirit itself. That's why Mary herself says her so magnifies The Lord ,magnifies in Hebrew.means "makes great" and everybody knows that the reason jesus is great is because of the holy spirit supplying him the power in physical reality. I guess what I'm saying is.They were both sent by the father.Just as jesus sent out his apostles two buy two , so did the father With the mother and son Or the dove and the lamb. Once again, I did not read this anywhere. Let me know if an ancient father has written this concept down and I I would love to read it.
