One from the great Johnny Smith! This is a nice study for closed voicings. These clusters are very typical in Johnny Smith's slow ballads but I'm warning you; if you have difficulty reaching these voicings, don't practice these stretch for a too long period of time. Last year when I transcribed 'Home' from Allan Holdsworth I have injured my left hand and for like 6 months I was unable to do big stretch. Have fun!

I was figuring out some alternate fingering, but it all seems to work out into big stretches. I tried it on my Martin backpack guitar and it was a bit easier because of the smaller neck, but perhaps I will need to just leave this one alone

Some of the grips are really a big stretch, any advice on how to handle them?

In the 13th bar, that B13b9 is a 7-fret stretch! Can anyone really play that?
@JamesSeaberry
@JamesSeaberry 3 жыл бұрын
Yes; I use my thumb UNDER the neck for that 4th fret, something I got from Wim Overgaauw's book, "European Jazz Guitar". Its a thing I do a lot since I have small, old hands.

Or, you could play the Ab at the 11th fret, 5th string as an artificial harmonic along with the other voices as is.

Another way I tried it was fretting the 3 5 7 left handed, then put my right hand index finger down on 9, then strum with middle finger or thumb. It doesn’t sound great but it’s one way of achieving it

@@findtheothers That is a great idea too. It works. For more ideas on how to do this, look at Sean McGowan's book of Fingerstyle arrangements. It's basically a primer on how to play like this. I have the book, and it uses lots of voicings with the picking hand fretting. Thanks for your idea!

Does he use his thumb for any of these chords. I have to break up some of the chords into quarter notes

These are big stretches. Didn't realize some people could stretch out their fingers this wide!

I hold the neck of my guitar up very high, like John Stowell does; it helps a lot by taking the bend (as in 'tension') out of your wrist.

You are correct, Diego! They can't make those stretches which are not necessary. Francois does a fine job and I appreciate it, but this is an example of why I detest tablature. It is up to the musician to create a fingering that makes sense for them. And those stretches are not necessary.

@@guitargod6997 Agree. One of the teachers I studied, our dear Joe Pass, strongly recommend not to use these weird fingerings. I always try different chord fingerings, inversions and if that doesn't work, I leave out a voice. The audience barely notices the difference. And yes, I play in a more classical position with the guitar top nut a bit above the level of my eyes. But that doesn't solve all problems. We guitar players are sometimes jealous of those nice clustered voicings on the piano. But we must accept the limits of our instrument. Stretches are also dangerous to ruin your tendons and joints and cause unwanted muscular tension. So warning: "Don't try this at home" :-)

Smith liked the 25” scale guitar for making these stretches easier. I make my own guitars. 23 and 24” scales make these voicing playable for me.
@mer1red
@mer1red 3 жыл бұрын
@@32251 I play a 24.75 in guitar (about 63 cm). For me this is the lower limit. If you go shorter the sound deteriorates more than I can accept. Especially the low E becomes muddy. Other tricks such as thin strings, extreme low action require less effort but come at the expense of a beautiful tone. Multiscale fretboard is also problematic for jazz. So for me there is no other solution than to accept the limit. When a giant such as Joe Pass says: don't do it, that means something. If anyone found Columbus's egg, don't hesitate to share it ... .
