Regular viewers will know that I'm an unashamed tool geek! Having the right tool for the job not only makes the job of engine building easier, but it also delivers far more satisfaction.
In this video, I show the latest addition, a QMP Racing MC-1 Measuring Centre. It's designed primarily for measuring pistons, rods, pins and bearing shells, but can also be used for many other things - with extremely accurate and repeatable results - every time.
It links with the Mitutoyo gauges via data cable and works with our Performance Trends software, which is really cool.

Thanks to Brad Lagman from QMPRacing for sending, what I believe, is the first set to land in Europe. Check out Brad's Instagram: @QMPRacing

Nice setup for the piston measuring and a lot closer to where you guys need to be for the work you do but I do hope that you are in a temperature and humidity controlled environment because small fluctuations in temperature and humidity will effect your measurement. Handling the pistons and setting gauges with your fingers will also increase sizes and bear in mind that your setting gauges will be calibrated at or very close to 20°C. As a former calibration engineer I can tell you that it can make a huge difference when you are searching for microns and if your tolerances are sub 10 microns then you need even more accurate measuring equipment than you have. As a comparator to see variations in size over a set it will work great but not for pur accurate measurement, depending on tolerances of course. A metroscope may be a better option providing measurement down to .0002mm.

The spec for piston width is bottom up, also pistons aren’t normally flat on the top so not a flat base to use.

What do you mean? We measure everything to make sure the engine matches our specs. No one gives specs for performance engines. Oem specs are very wide normally.

@@REPerformanceUK when you order the pistons, do you not order a particular size?
@REPerformanceUK
@REPerformanceUK 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but they will normally be to a size with a tolerance, so we need to make sure that tolerance is acceptable and also get the measurements to then calculate any machining that needs to be done. Different manufacturers have different price parts and ultimately it’s the accuracy that suffers in that instance. You never take the risk by just dropping them in…….

Looking forward to seeing more geeky stuff on Macca motors. So nice to see someone get into the nitty gritty engineering of them. I find it facinating. ( Don't worry, it can never be too techincal! )

I do like the vids but with you buying all this new kit the cost will go to the customer and please dont say it won't, working at the 3 decimal spaces point for what you are doing isnt really a benefit for road going cars and in my eyes abit of a waste of money. On the secretive side of things you are not Underground racing push out 3k Hp lambo's etc that run a pass at a time and shut off so tolerances need to be for road spec and everything you offer can be bought from states etc and delivered within the week so nothing needs to be a secret apart from mapping which is engine dependant. Im not being negative and like i say i like the detailed Vlogs but im a realistic sort of person.

The Cobolt actually comes out of Congo under indentured and child labour. While the Lithium is mostly out of Chile under god knows what conditions. While to gas comes from Russia. The primary source of electricity (gas) in the UK. Battery powered car are by far and away the most perfect example of poor energy and environment management.
