I would build an island between the kitchen and the lounge instead of building a wall. It will keep the area nice and bright.

Yes why do the Brits always want a closed in kitchen with walls? So strange to do now a days. Why block out all the light and flow of the room?
@twobluestripes
@twobluestripes 2 жыл бұрын
@@erinandbryan994 lots of people like to be able to close the door and keep any smells or mess out of the living or entertaining space, or people who like to cook and don’t want others underfoot like to be able to shoo them out of the room and not have the kitchen become a gathering space. I think that if the lounge includes the dining space instead of the kitchen, the dining space often becomes the “heart of the home” for hanging out or entertaining.

May I suggest no wall? Keep the space open. Invest in a good exhaust vent above your stove .If I were you, I'd use light colors & keep cielings white to reflect more light to appear even bigger .I have a 14 × 30 foot open Great Room with kitchen / dining on one half & living room on other half with a small island in middle ,with a cathedral ceiling .It feels very open. I Hung my Ivory Damask drapes almost to the ceiling for even more visual effect to draw the eye up to view light blue sheer swag scarves.. All my furniture came from resale. I bought 2 Ice blue velvet Queen Anne wing back chairs from a local church .A thrift store Pedistal drum Lamp table & Reproduction slant top desk. I splurged on my throw pillows with upholstery silk in ice blue. I softened the windows with white lace window panels .For dining I found at resale, a Ethan Allen Old Town walnut Trestle table , & assorted ladderback chairs. I have Wrought Iron candle sconces, Fireplace screen , Curtain rods, & 2 Chandeliers for that Old World feel. I like to set lit candles on the dark wood table & watch the flickering candles reflection in the wood. (A little time travel..😉) The only thing modern is my kitchen appliances & a flatscreen tv above My fireplace. Now All I need is a tall folding screen for times when I have dirty dishes & unexpected guests.😁 I have almost completed my HAPPY PLACE . Oh ! did I mention I live in a mobile home?? Anything's possible if you can dream it! ☺ Sadie ,Here's Wishing you happy decorating .What ever you choose ,I know it will look perfect.😉

Hi Sadie good ideas and lots of work ahead. I think that the kitchen, dining and lounge area should be open plan with a Long Island or peninsula with cupboards and drawers and an extended counter to give you breakfast space to eat at or when one is cooking the other can sit and peel veggies while chatting to each other. Also box in the hot water cylinder so it’s not visible then give yourself as much bathroom space so that you can hopefully have a bath for winter and a shower for summer xxx
@bonniesteinke6624
@bonniesteinke6624 2 жыл бұрын
I am usually not a fan of open concept kitchens, but in this case I think it would be a great idea. 👍🏻 You get the benefit of the light from windows on both sides. A peninsula dividing the living room from the kitchen space would be useful, especially if it had a raised bar height counter on the living room side to provide an eating area and a bit of cover to hide messy counters( if you’re like me😬)
@teresacarle294
@teresacarle294 2 жыл бұрын
@@bonniesteinke6624 😉Yes, that natural light & those views are pretty spectacular. When it comes to open concept, 💯% believe in a high peninsula bar or ledge. It goes a long way to hide any of the kitchen counter clutter from the greater room & guests. 🤗Plus, you could do a built-in storage bench in an "L" configuration along it on the front side of it (& exterior wall) to create a cosy dining nook with cushioned seating. Choosing an expandable table for when hosting extra family & company. The armchairs could flank a sideboard when not in use. 😁Having a table centered in the kitchen is a charming European tradition, but I think it takes up valuable real estate🤣. As a taller person who loves to cook & bake, I like lots of counter height space for prep🔪 , assembly 🥣, rolling out dough🍕, etc. Most dining tables are far too low ⬇️ for me to do both activities w/o hurting back😔. Plus, having to navigate around seated ppl chairs🪑in a small footprint👣 is a major pain😖. A stool in the area is fine, but cooks can still look over the bar/ledge to chat with folks @ table or sitting area. Keep the sink💦 in it's place, & add a full-size pantry or refrigerator next to it. 🤫 It would be fun to start from scratch to put in a dream 💭 kitchen. 🍽 Use a vintage China hutch with glass doors for dish storage on the wall end of the peninsula counter. Create a faux look of the range & venthood tucked in an ancient hearth🔥 on that rear wall between the windows. Shallow floating timber shelves in the nooks under the windows. So much could be done with this space... 😃It will be interesting to see how Sadie & Mo approach it. If their taste is mod, traditional, farmhouse, etc. 💚 Bridget from Cali ☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

@@ninjanana8730 tons of people share homes with one bathroom for their whole family. As long as everyone is respectful of others’ time, and doesn’t monopolize it, it works fine. You should talk to Billy about having stables on site. Would be so charming for the overall feel of the place. Perhaps part of that huge garden could be a field? And don’t put up a wall in that great room. Rather have open plan. Also. Make that small bathroom for Olivia and have her bedroom off the great room so she’s on a separate floor. (Teenage privacy and all). Then on the top floor, put your washing machine up there when you expand that bathroom. You could use the second bedroom up there as an office with sitting area. That way you will have your own private space. And so will Olivia when you guys retire for the night.

Have an open kitchen. Don’t block it off with a wall. You can have a sink in an island that looks over the lounge / family room. Won’t be cramped or small. Use all drawers for the cabinets on the bottom. Easier to organize and get into. Use full extension slides. Have bar stools with an extended counter top for the island.

Congrats! It is a beautiful sun filled apartment. As for the kitchen -- hummm. Make it a great-room with the kitchen at one end with cabinets and a "breakfast bar" and stools where you are going to put the wall. That way, you are never cut off from people while you are cooking. You could also keep it a great-room and put a table and chairs where the wall would go. Enjoy :o)

I would also add, it would be nice to have more of an open concept downstairs & not close off the kitchen. It would make it seems closed in & small. A bar dividing the room with full cabinets below & an extended countertop/bar on the living area side with stools for additional eating would be nice. It also keeps everyone in the loop. Exciting times!!

I see other people have advised not to put up a wall in the living room, and I have to say I agree. When we did our renovation, we put in an island which opens up to the living and meals area. It works very well for us. It especially works well if you are working in the kitchen and have someone in the living area, so you can still chat etc. I’ve found it really good for when we have guests, as we use the island as a servery for aperitif, or buffet style eating. Wishing you the best of luck with it all. Very exciting times.
