In my youth, 60's to mid-70's, we used to attend on Pole Day (Admission:$2) and sit "everywhere". I've seen practice & qualifying from dozens of different seats/places.

Paddock section 12. Thats where i sat this year. Right at yard of bricks and winner circle directly across the track where everything goes down pre and post race.
