Our R32 Swapped Mk2 Golf FAILED Its MOT. Why?

After spending nearly a year rebuilding the engine of our VW Golf Mk2 with R32 swap, doing timing chains, head gasket, engine bay rust treatment and brake lines, we were confident it would pass its annual MOT. Well that didn't quite go to plan, and we've got some serious work on our hands to make the car road worthy once more.

Yes, those circular bits are “drag points” from when the bare bodyshell is dragged along the production line, definitely not structurally strong enough to support a fully built up car.

Definitely not. And I know when the cars were newer you perhaps could get away with lifting it on these points, but now they're 30+ years old, having suffered years of grot and salt from the roads, they're going to be weakened and definitely not able to withstand jacking.

I'm so fecked off! To deny that any damage was caused when they would of seen/felt that go in their care. Also makes me worried for the master cylinder, have they bodged that when they looked at it??? Further investigation is required tomorrow and carpet up to see if it's travelled further up 😢🙏🤞it hasn't

I think a thorough going over all areas where that garage may have touched is in order. I'm so cross, but it's fixable. It's just the time constraint which is the issue.

I don't know if I'm angry, upset, or just finding myself laughing about it. I've had my real anger moment, so I think it's the latter now, otherwise I'd drive myself mad!

Tell me about it. Gutted, but thankfully fixable. Just wish people were more aware of these not being used as jacking points.

It's possible that the tech assumed it was a jacking point like the type you get on BMW and Mercedes, perhaps not acquainted with an old MK2 Golf ? Either way it's a poor response from the garage you used

Exactly that. Their response was, "well if it looks like a jacking point, that's what I'd tell the lads to use to put the two poster ramp onto, and if it buckles, that's the fault of the car's, not ours..." I did inform him that what he used was not a jacking point, but merely a point to transport the car round the production line, but they wouldn't buy it. Can only try and educate so far! 'Can lead a horse to water...' and all that

I had the same on my mk2 Jetta But luckily I was there and sin them just about to jack it up in the same place …. Nooooo your put the jack though the floor 😡

Crikey! Try not to use it, as it could so easily go through the sill as there's nothing behind it. Just a void before your footwell. Best bet is to jack on the front engine mount or via the subframe where it meets the chassis rail on the wishbone. Those two points are incredibly strong. I tend to jack on the front engine mount then support on the latter points mentioned.

It is fixed! 🙌 The red Golfs MOT, however was about 2 years ago! 😬 Need to do a little bit of work on it then will be back on the road again.

I have thought about naming them, but I don't want to get into a potential tit for tat argument with them now. My thoughts are, nobody died, yes I've been massively inconvenienced, but I've spoken to them and despite denying responsibility this is hopefully something they can learn from and teach their staff. I'll just be sure to not use them again and leave a 1 star review on Google.

That's a chassis outrigger not a jacking point..

Exactly this. I know some folk have jacked their car up from there before, but with over 30 years of road salt and grime sitting in those little cups, it doesn't take much to weaken the metal, which then wouldn't sustain the weight of a car when jacked. Frustrating, but fixable, thankfully.

Absolutely gutted for you, but sadly these are some of the issues of running older cars. Unfortunately I have to dissagree with the claim these are not jacking points, they were! I have sent you a screen shot from an old VW manual (Image 00-A276) which shows when lifting with a trolley jack or two post ramp, this is where you were advised to place the pads. It is seriously bad form for the Garage not to have noticed that it colapsed, I would think that someone certainly did know. Anyhow repair pannels are readilly available, and it seems clear that the tin worm has got in there so it would be prudent to obtain some. Interesting, reading up on it, yes you are right. They are labelled as a factory jacking point, but it does seem extremely strange to label them as such, because it's a 3mm thick steel cup spot welded onto a 1.2mm sheet of steel with a hollow above it. It'd only be the factory creases and stamped indentations in the sheet that would provide any form of strength. So any repeated jacking will eventually weaken the area, coupled with environmental exposure over 30+ years.

I don't think it's worthwhile. Nobody died. I'm very inconvenienced and frustrated, but it's not worth pursuing as I can't evidence that it was that garage that did the damage. So some passive 1 star Google reviews will have to suffice!
