The Volkswagen Golf Mk2 is a classic car, and like all classics, our R32 swapped Mk2 still isn't finished.
What needs doing to our Golf to finish it? There's rust that's getting worse and an electrical issue that needs sorting, plus there was also a shock in store for us which caught us by surprise!
What can we do about this? And what are our plans for the future with our Mk2 Golf?

Most definitely. That is priority number one. If the rust spreads, the car's days are numbered.

Oh this car really has been a rollercoaster of emotions this past year. The stress building up to turning the key after all that work, to excitement when it started, to sadness when the coolant woes were still there. It really desrves all that rust to be gone for good now. Just in time for show season. Great video!

Not to mention the shock of finding out on its MOT that the sill had been previously caved in! Really thought it was game over at that point. Time for some love for the old turd.

A shame on redoing the bodywork areas - i've found that can be soul destroying paying out only for it to rust again. Anything like rust on those rear lights and the lower rear front arch needs new metal grafting in and fresh paint. The bits on your sill you could probably grind back to bare metal, treat the pitted areas with hydrate 80, light fill and touch in (or just touch in if a small area as hardly noticeable). Leak - as you say either sunroof drains, door membranes or grommets on bulkhead. Or rust behind seal on screen.. but likely to be one of the other areas. When you did the membranes did you use that butyl tape for sealing the plastic to the metal and follow the little channels in the door metal to lay the butyl tape? Seats - i prefer cloth in non air conditioned cars, bit rich from me as I have leather recaros in my Corrado, but cloth is my comfy, grippy and nicer in the summer when we do most of our cars mileage! Thanks very much for the tip on the bodywork. I've had the areas around the rear lights sanded back, prepped and resprayed a number of times, but it's just coming back faster each time and is looking quite bad now. So yes, replacement metal is what's required. The sills, as you say seem solid, so should hopefully be a more simple repair. With regards to the door membrane I've not had to change them yet, I've just had the door card off and they were still in tact, surprisingly! Windscreen surround seems good from what I can see, with no obvious rust poking through from under the seal, so my suspicion is the bulkhead grommets.

And yes, I much prefer cloth seats too. Main reason I went for thr Corrado leathers was because of the better seating position, but with extreme heat/cold surface as a trade-off. I think cloth or alcantera centres will be a happy medium.

Never ending isn't it 😅 Personally I would sort leaks rip seats out then a brand new second hand black carpet and headliner. Then rust work on the rear and arch and seals. Then concentrate on subframe etc it's only going to be stood whilst the above is being sorted anyway. Stick a cage in the back couple of cheap buckets and harnesses for shits and giggles and track car it and south east cruise toy. Easier said then done and money pits haha either way looking forward to the videos 👍

It really is never ending! The leak certainly took me by surprise! The items you listed are definitely the priority we'll be doing them. However, as we still use it as a family wagon (maybe not the safest by modern standards), we'll not put a cage in just yet, so want to make the best out of the interior as it stands. But can certainly see the appeal of going full track car nutter mode! 😅

Just found this channel and love it...def fix the rust and can't wait to see what you do with it moving forward. The brakes also look small, done an upgrade yet? Haven't watched all of the previous videos yet, so excuse my comment if you have already addressed this.

Hey, thanks for the kind words about the channel. Rust, check out the water leak video after this one. 😉 Brakes are 280mm G60 fronts and 16v rears, woth EBC yellow stuff pads,, so pretty powerful and not necessary to upgrade further. Hope you continue to enjoy the channel. 😁

@themediocretriathlete that'll be more than adequate. Mine stops very well, even on track. Any bigger I'd be having issues with unsprung weight and possibly lock the wheels up too easily.

Get rust sorted first the headliner from Myrtle are very gd that's what's in Leannes car I would also change carpets and trims to black and visors like I did in Leannes which I have spare lol as for water they leak up by screen where they rot out ....As for seats retrimmed like you say much nicer look tackle other bits next winter....

Did you say "upgrade?" 😂😉 I'll say this quietly, but I've grown quite fond of Mk3s, especially VR6s and GTI 16vs! My dad owned a Mk3... but nothing exciting, it was a GL TDI with a mighty 110bhp!

In fairness a well presented Mk3 VR6 or GTI 16v are really nice and certainly appealing. Aside from yours, I can't recall seeing another in months! There's a sliver 16v near us but I haven't seen it for a while, perhaps off the road for winter.

I have rust on the same spots of the car. Do i just paint over it to keep it from rusting more? Or should i renew the whole rusty part?

If the rust has set in then it's quite an extensive repair. You can either have it sanded back, treated, filled and repainted. Or for longevity, the metal will need cutting out fully and replacing with good metal. More expensive, but worthwhile in the long term.

Let me know how to sort the leak on floor. Front and back. I have the same but no clue how to fix. Ive added membrane to all doors correctly and checked my sunroof. They are all good. But no clue still why!?

I sure will. I aim to get to the bottom of this leak, as it's high priority. The door membranes were good when I changed the door cards for the leather items a few years ago, but may have perished in that time. However the fact the ingress in mine poured onto my feet suggests I may be missing some grommets or have a blocked drain tube in the rain tray area. I shall investigate! Another point for you to check are the sunroof drains. Very common to block, so poke a garden wire down them to ensure they're clear of dead leaves amd moss etc.

Do you have a sunroof? It's common for the draijs to clog and in some cases, the ppastic for them fails. You can blow them out with compressed air or manually with cable (telecom) fishing poles fiahing

I do have a sunroof yeah, and in all honesty it was a while ago since I checked the drains, so will be my first port of call.

Could it be the drain holes in the bottom of the door are blocked?

Quite possibly. But would that explain the water pouring in from under the dash?
