Hey you two, you're amazing!!! Thanks for the shout out, we're so happy to have you two as part of our little ZW Fam :) Your clear explanations on cost and quality was brilliant. You are so correct that if you want to support local and organic, you are also supporting fair Canadian wages that supports someone living within your own neighbourhood. Much love !!!

If Leah likes making bread you should try making your own tortillas. They are AMAZING fresh and then they don't come in plastic. It's obviously more work and time so it's not exactly an everyday solution but every bit helps.

Yesss I've been making my own tortillas, peanut butter, and recently made a homemade dry felafel mix (then just add lemon juice and water before I cook it). Unfortunately I tried making my own tofu and I haven't been able to get it to work for me. It cuts down the plastic and cost but yes takes more time.

What makes me extra sad about the pandemic is that a lot of people, including supermarket managers, it seems, have put zero waste on the back-back burner (I know that there is not such a thing as a back-back burner), but thanks for mentioning that so many problems are, indeed, systemic. Still love your vids a lot! xx Greetings from Germany. Tania.

I’d love you you two to have a collab episode with a spoonie (someone with a disability or illness that seriously limits how much they can do in a day) - we love the idea of going to several shops but have to call it a day after just one. A collab with people like us who have to spend our energy in a highly measured way on making the most with zero waste shopping would be amazing.
@mathildelonborg
@mathildelonborg 3 жыл бұрын
I would love that! We actually have two zero waste shops in my town now, but they are 5 km from my house and as a fellow spoonie (who spends 85 % of my time in bed) I simply can’t fit that (electric) bicycle ride into my energy schedule. It wouldn’t make sense to take a car since the gas alone would be worse for the environment than the plastic packaging I save 🤷🏻‍♀️

It is more expensive to shop zero waste, but honestly my family has begun to spend LESS than we did before at big groceries. We all around buy less things we don't need and waste a lot less food because of it. We used to buy as much as we could get because of a sale or good deal and then that food would rot because we can't feasibly eat 24 oranges before they go bad. "No Kyle we cannot buy $5 bags of chips are you crazy? Eat an orange.."

@@LeahandLevi it tastes super fresh. you only need to after making leave them to cool and put them in the freezer. To reheat them you must put it 10 seconds in the microwave and then in the pan ... depends on the tortilla sometimes it's better to get them a little bit wet before reheating. Fresh corn or flour tortilla everyday :) BTW love your channel

Here's some hope: in Argentina vegetables wrapped in plastic ARE a strange thing. Those pre-cut and selected veggies are only sold in a few supermarkets in big cities and I've never met anyone who actually buys them. Also, frozen veggies always come in plastic but they are expensive, so not many people choose them. Most of us just go to the grocery shop and take our own reusable bag 🙌🏼 It's cheaper and you get better quality. It's a win-win 🤩

Definitely a priveleged observation: but it's also really interesting to see what products you just stop buying when they're more expensive. Like ya, i'll buy that thing when it's a convenience purchase of $1.99. But as soon as it costs a dollar more or I need to carry an extra jar to get it home, I just kind of forget about it forever. Like an exercise in perceived worth, for sure.

Thanks, another fun and informative video. :-) I know not everyone has the space for this, but I live in an area where zero waste shopping is definitely not easy. Because we have a laundry room with some storage room, I buy things like rice and oats and beans in the largest containers I can. My sister and I split a 50 lb bag of oats every couple months. Sometimes you have to look to source these things but often you can get them from the same types of places that businesses do. Some wholesale suppliers will sell to the general public, at least in the US. It also can ultimately mean fewer trips to the store and that can be more eco-friendly if you have to drive to get places. Just thought I'd share that little tip. :-)

So I don't know about Canada, but here in the U.S. you can find tortillas in zip-loc esque bags. Now, a lot of people throw them away, but they are a *perfectly usable* bag until it gets a hole in it, so our family just washes them with some light soap and reuse them until we can't anymore. So I know you aren't big on plastic, but as far as something not immediately going into the garbage, maybe you guys can find a tortilla company you like that uses them? Just a thought. A lot of us have to resort to other methods since bulk stores don't exist, are too far away or inaccessible or we otherwise don't have access to a lot of the same things as others. :)

I always find it both slightly surprising and slightly funny, when people say "when shopping zero waste, you can't shop all in the one place". I'm French, I've never shopped in the one place. When I lived there, my produce came from the daily market, or the small green grocer, my cheese from the cheese shop next to it, my meat from several butchers, depending on what I wanted or where I wanted to go, my bread and pastries obviously came from the bakery (whichever one I fancied that day), my fresh pasta and ravioli came from one of the several pasta shops in town, the fish from one of 2 fishmongers in my neighbourhood, eggs, olive oil, honey and jams would also all be bought from the producers at the market or from the little green grocer lady, who uses less appealing produce to make delicious jams. And the rest came from the supermarket, or one of the many, many shops dedicated to organic foods and products. Now that I'm in Australia, I don't have access to all these, but unless I want to spend way too much money on foods that aren't necessarily good anyway, there is no way I can shop in the one supermarket, I need to go to 3 different ones! And it's a lot less pleasant; it involves my car a lot, ugly parking lots, ugly shops and no community feeling, chit chat with the owner, the sales person, the stall holder, the neighbours or random people who happen to be shopping as well. Smaller, specialised shops are the best! Also, your city looks really beautiful!

@@LeahandLevi I took it for granted until I left 😕 but I think it's pretty much what you and Leah are doing. It was really nice to see you guys having a few jokes with the zero waste worker, and you mentioned you got falafels from a small shop as well, that's how we build communities really 😊

My son is starting JK in September and I would love to see a video on packing a zero waste kid lunch. We already use stasher bags, old containers, and colibri bags for snacks. I’m trying to find a couple other things like for the main lunch that is easy to handle and light for an almost 4 year old. I know you don’t have kids but I’m sure you have great recommendations!

Hey Brenda! Sounds like you're doing a pretty good job already to be honest. We haven't packed lunches in years since we work from home but those are the things we would start with!

Oooohhh.. the "shield" at the cashier in Zero waste Emporium LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! *takes a screen shot and puts in my inspiration map* About the noodles in plastic... Call and write the company. They might have another solution or can "invernt" one if you as consumers ask for one. I have had a company re-think musli packages when I started to e-mail them about it.

I am fortunate to get eggs from my parents chickens 😁👍, my dad also grows strawberries, lettuce, kiwi, passion fruit, tomatoes and flowers. It's not easy being zero/low waste. Most people are unaware of what it is, this morning I went to the deli at the local supermarket and bought my own container to get ham, the person serving me cut the ham put it in plastic and then in my container 😤😤🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦 she didn't know that she was supposed to just put it in my container. I need to write to the store manager and tell them that they need to train their staff properly. I usually go to my local bulk store once a month and stock up on cleaning supplies and dry goods. For fresh produce I go to a local organic market in the park. A lot of the prices are the same as in the supermarket.

check out terracycle! they can recycle your hard to recycle stuff you have in the kitchen. they have other boxes categorized to what you need. boxes are pricey but work out for people who live a low waste lifestyle cus then the the box should be able to last you months! :)

One time in Vancouver I wanted to cook some Mexican food for my friend but I wanted to make it zero waste. I went to a Mexican restaurant that had a little store section and I learned that they sold freshly made tortillas! :'0 it was great

I didn't think stores would go back to allowing personal containers post Covid. I hope Bulk Barn here in Ontario has started back up.🤞
