Our red-sided garter snake Kylee gave birth to a beautiful healthy clutter of squiggly babies! They are so beautiful!! Though I think they're trying to form a union... (watch and you'll see ;) )

Preserving the anomalous stillborn might be best via just placing in 70% ethanol, and or 3% Formaldehyde. That should preserve it. Freezing WILL do more damage to the tissue then just placing in Ethanol.

@@cricket00fur well, if you can tolerate massive cell damage and only intend to look at it on a very macroscopic scale... The problem is that freezing in a normal freezer is far too slow, causing cells to rupture and ice crystals to form. I do use freezing to preserve details in my lab, though that's done with very small amounts of tissue and using exotic equipment such as plunge freezers and high pressure freezing. Freezing is better then nothing at all, but its no where close to what formaldehyde or simple dehydration can do.

@@lbochtler I would assume most people do not need to examine a specimen on a microscopic level, though. I have a standard household chest freezer for my taxidermy critters, which keeps them around -2°F, and have been able to formalin fix fetal bison, coyote hearts, opossum joeys, etc. from that freezer. A standard home freezer is the best option available to most people if they do not have the ability to preserve with chemicals immediately...which, presumably, most people don't have the ability to do.

Fun fact, conjoined twins are due to the egg splitting later in development. The egg usually splits much earlier on with identical twins. If it happens when there's more cells, it has a harder time and some of them stay stuck together, or don't split at all. PS, at least in humans, the term Siamese twins is considered outdated and at least a little offensive.
@Undomaranel
@Undomaranel 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, and I'm going to sound awful for a hot minute, it's only an outdated and offensive term if you choose to take offense to it. We all know the medical condition she was referring to, does it really matter if she says conjoined or uses a more well known phrase? In 5 years there will be yet another politically correct term to replace "conjoined" because that's too non-specified, are they only conjoined at the spine, do they share a leg, at what point do we need to differentiation between cervical conjoined vs lumbar conjoined... etc. Granted I'm not Siamese (though it's been Thailand for sometime now and the people don't even refer to themselves as Siamese anymore) so I can't speak from that angle, but usually naming conventions in science and medicine are after studies, the doctor who discovered/ worked/ sacrificed for the project, or extraordinary examples. If the term "Siamese twin" is in honor of conjoined siblings who defied the odds in an era of poor medicine... which is the case as I was taught back in the day... isn't that more of a term of endearment than a slur against all Siamese or twins of Siamese heritage? Isn't it honoring all people with that condition of every race after the initial example? Isn't it more personal for such a unique situation than a sterile "conjoined"? Just something to think about. There is trying to be polite of speech and be racially neutral, and then there's being controlling and demeaning over insensitive terms... and it's all on an ever changing slippery slope because the people who are offended by such fads typically are offended when someone tells them it's offensive, not for personal moral reasons or because they know someone of that condition who has been bullied incessantly over it. AKA "Karens"-from-the-HOA type of people. It is literally a choice to be offended or not. You'll run into Catholics who find Nun jokes hilarious or sacrilegious, you'll find Black folk who enjoy it when others use an N-word pass while others will be mortified, you'll find fat people who laugh at their size and others who will break into tears if you so much as hint at anything relating to clothing size or food (I struggle with weight so I have a pass in that regard lol). It's individual, and it should be up for discussion with your circles rather than a blanketed, "Molly hates that the scientist in TMNT 2 used the word "retard" when referring to slowing down the chemical's progress because her step sister has Downs, so stop saying _ritard_ when you're reading music! It's offensive (to Molly so I'm offended too)!" Does the step sister have an opinion; why are we letting Molly flip out over centuries old Italian nomenclature adopted across the musical world or the actual definition of the word? If the step sister has been bullied by the word and would prefer not to hear it, naturally you choose other terminology and start saying "slow down" or the full _ritardando_ with less emphasis on the first two syllables. But hearsay from an overprotective Molly who is reacting emotionally to a word instead of looking into why it exists? That's controlling, narrow minded and demeaning in her part, as well meaning as it may be. If someone who is conjoined honestly hates the term Siamese twins, you bet I wouldn't use it around them and would even advocate against it in their circles. Same as I don't tell blonde jokes (even by replacing the color blonde with other colors) when people get offended by it or the "a priest/rabbi walk into a bar" jokes. There's making a joke or reference at the expense of an identity or situation, such as the stereotypical jokes, and then there's recognizing the origins and history behind a term. If you chose to not use it that's fine, you just need to recognize not everyone's going to agree and getting huffy won't solve anything. Also, that there is history behind terms and it's not all humanity's worst, nor are people who use the terms evil and looking to hurt others. Best wishes fam

@@Undomaranel we stop using terms that offend people because it’s the right thing, and the respectful thing, to do. Example: I am disabled. Handicapped used to be an acceptable term, and many people and especially businesses when talking about accessibility and the like, still use it even though the disabled community has been pushing for the word disabled to be used for decades at this point. Terms evolve, and you should do the same. You used the n word as an example. You know how it’s only socially acceptable to use it if you’re black, and if you aren’t you use the respectful term that is favored across the board, or you’re a racist. It’s the same for the term disabled, and it’s the same for conjoined twin. What it says to other people when you insist on using the outdated term is that you don’t even respect the person or group of people enough to refer to them the way they want. I assume you’d be upset if someone constantly called you the wrong name?

I directed my younger family members to your channel, they had started to talk to me about wanting pet snakes of their own. I wanted them to know how much work it would be as well as all the options they have. I suggested garters, they really like hognoses. they are all girls as well, just wanted to let you all know you have some more fans who you have made love snakes.
