Brilliant, thank you for doing these videos, i delivered sunday papers for Talbots in 1980, age 10 assisting older boys at that age and learning the ropes, i remember getting paid 40 pence for about 3 hours work, then spending it on sweets and chocolate in the same shop. Also i remember racing to the sports shop on Liverpool rd after school to buy and or swap my football 79 stickers, trying desperatly to complete the book. I was dragged kicking and screaming to live in Australia at age 12, i absolutely loved Kidsgrove and didnt want to leave. One more thing, i still have a book called Danny Dunn and the Heat Ray, borrowed from Kidsgrove library, it was due back in November 1981, i would love to return it one day, but im a bit concerned about the size of the fine. Great video guys - got me reminiscing on my formative years in the late 70s and early 80s where I worked for Machin's (Liverpool Road) & Park Stores as a paper boy - did 12 rounds a week for Machins before and after school and 2 more on Saturday for £1.50 !!! Was elated to get a shorter round almost on the doorstep at the Park Stores in Clough Hall for £2.30 a week (Mrs Davies who ran the PS opened Pennys in Kidsgrove as I recall)! Then worked for Talbots where I could earn more on a single Sunday morning than doing the whole week - luxury! On the back of this Mrs Talbot asked me to work in the shop all day Sunday where I didn't have to get soaking wet - the smell of the tobacco store out back was amazing..... Similar to you Dave I then made the leap to the trolleys at Normid - getting some serious money then! Remember Bobby Adams and some of the rogue security guys - our crew included the incredible Derek who came from Red Street and was the self-proclaimed boss of the trolley gang - a lad called Geoff and an old boy called Ted who lived in Red Lion Close who used to drive to Normid to do his shift. One of the great bonuses was to grab the box of discarded Vale lottery tickets - unbelievable how many folk didn;'t realise they'd won!! As an aside, Mr Gees was my Great Grandma's (Mrs Harriet Ball) tobacconist and confectioners up to the 60s. The other two shops I have a lot of fond memories of was the Virgo record store in Liverpool Road - didn't last long as I recall but there and Steeles in Market street had a great selection of rock albums ..... well done !
