Our TINY baby goat escaped! (raising goats in our backyard)

Күн бұрынWinnie is our newest baby goat born on our backyard farm. We thought we had the best fencing, but apparently it was no match for her tiny frame.
Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

One thing to help out with your chickens is you could let them eat some of their eggs, the shell is good for them. I found this out with my chickens. Hope you see this and it helps. Hope all is well.

I feed my quails their own eggs. They have hard shells.

just roast the left over egg shells and crush them ( so they don't associate fresh eggs as food) and give it back to them that way.

Didn't you show the process of dehorning them, I'm curious to see how that happens, do you use a tool?

the way that we do it on my family farm is with the vet. He comes out with a hot tool and scorches the horns. In this way the wound is cauterized immediately so that they dont have an infection. There are two different ones that he uses depending on how big the goats are and how much their horns have developed. One of them is like a metal ring with serration and the other is sort of a semi circle that is not serrated. For older goats (and stronger goatlings) he puts them to sleep while he does it but the smaller babies can stay awake and the whole process takes less than a minute per goat. They fully heal about two to three weeks later and a new layer of skin grows over the place where horns would have grown. Hope this helps :)

With regards to Delilah, when you mentioned that Doris "knows" it reminded me of our dogs. We had two that were real close. When we'd take Princess, the older one, to the vet, Buster, a younger unrelated male, would bust out of the yard looking for her. So, when we had to put her down (cancer in the jaw that was caught too late), we brought her home with us and let him "see" her. The look on his face is something I will never forget but it was necessary. He knew she was gone and he didn't try to break out anymore. Animals are aware. They may not react like humans do, but they do have connections and bonds with each other. It was very good for Doris and the twins to be with her as it was probably good for Delilah to be with her family, too. I was serious about adopting her had I had the zoning permission and space. Knowing about her heart condition, it's no wonder she was so small. :( She was sweet and I am NOT a goat person but I do love watching yours.
