The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

My husband has alzheimers. Our planned trip to London and the beautiful English countryside were put on hold , in fact, we may never get there. At 75 and 78 it just may be impossible. We do, however, travel with Julie and Luke almost daily. We often rewatch episodes , a pleasure for me and he doesn't remember watching the first time... Thank you for sharing your home and your lives. It makes these old Alabama history buffs happy!

Good thing you have many walls, Julie, because you will be framing and hanging these wonderful documents for years to come! You may have to install a framing team as you have an embroidery team. I'm sure you have a room you could dedicate to this purpose!

I’ll forever be puzzled by the fact that they have been married for at least 20 years and therefore Julie has been part of the family for that long but looks like this is the first time she comes in contact with all this clothing, letters, history etc. if I had the privilege of being part of such a family I’d get lost in the house looking for treasures or reading everything I’d be allowed to touch all the time!

Oh yes I know they have a lovely family with 4 children. I hope my comment wasn’t misinterpreted. I too, by marriage, came into a new culture and lifestyle and like Julie I embraced it with all I’ve got. As I watch more videos I understand more how all came to be. 💕

If I married in to a family with this much history I probably wouldn’t sleep for a year looking through all the old cupboards and trunks. My grandparents always encouraged us to go through the stuff they had (obviously they set it out for us to look through)

Unearthing countless treasures & it’s really exciting that we get to tag along. Even if it’s not quite the same as being there, being on video, Julie’s enthusiasm in finding all these wonderful things is contagious. Julie speaks of framing documents. Of course your artisan knows about the advantages of using acid-free materials when touching photos and documents, and a certain kind of protective glass against potential sunlight.

You may have already thought of this, but how about snapping a photograph of each dress BEFORE the acid-free paper wrap and then the box -- attach the photo to the outside of the box and you never have to wonder what is inside -- or open the box to check! 🙂

I just love the journey story with these dresses! what a fun find ! I love them all especially the 18th century gowns. the one you mentioned that's your favorite, I don't know why, probably because of the color theme but it makes me think Christmas vibes probably because of the reds and greens. I did see bits of blue but the red and green stands out to me a lot.

I understand the touching of things, I honestly do but there has to be a fine line somewhere. I can’t imagine finding an old piece of a bug & being so concerned about a wing might fall off. I know that probably sounds absurd but it’s so many things that will never be used nor viewed ever again. Like walking on egg shells all the time.
