Two years ago we filmed a short documentary style program that was aired on TV in Korea, and even now we still get a lot of questions and comments about it--some good, and some not so good. We made this video to shed light on Korean traditions such as 'Jesa', and to clear up any misconceptions people may have had after watching this program, which was edited in such a way that was quite misleading.

As a child of an American father and Thai mother I can totally understand this. There are a lot less conflicts than people would expect in a bicultural family. Thanks for sharing your life with us!

It's so great that you guys made this video! When TV programs are biased they can affect the opinions of so many people. As you said, even after the show ends people retain those ideas for a long time, and while the makers of the show may not realize, exaggerating the conflicts of international couples is not doing any good for the future. It's awesome that you guys took the time to address this and let us know how things really are. You guys are so great and I love your channel. All the best

My mom left Korea in the 70s, but she always stressed the sexism in traditional Korean beliefs. I think it's why she didn't want me to date Korean men. She didnt want me to have to feel less than. My husband jokes sometimes that I need to be five steps behind him when we go out and we laugh...lol. Anyway. I'm glad the culture is changing in Korea! We talk about moving our family there sometimes, because I think I can gain Korean citizenship if things go sideways here in the next four years.

John Baker I agree with u. When I was lived in Korea, people did not even talk about sexism and careful with that topic in school, but I heard a lots of sexism(many times it was joke tho) in American school.

Another great discussion! I've never been to Korea but I have watched a couple of Korean tv shows wherein they touch on cultural differences too, it is a major concern for foreigners. But I think there is change happening, especially since you guys are shedding light to these sensitive topics. Love these types of videos~ - Much love from a uni student in British Columbia, Canada!

it's so sad to see how truth can be easily edited out in most TV programs, just for the sake of increasing viewing rates. And how easily it can be trusted as well.This has definitely opened up my eyes to not believe in everything I see as the absolute truth! Thank you guys for sharing your experience! 저도 예전에 그 방송을 봤어요. 우리나라 국제커플을 보여주는 프로그램들이 대부분 그런 성향이 있는 것 같은데 뭐랄까 종갓집에 시집온 외국인 며느리의 시집살이 혹은 고부갈등 쪽으로 몰고가는 것 같은 느낌이 들었어요. 사실 제 눈에는 가족분들이 좋아보였는데 오히려 내레이션이나 편집 등이 마치 갈등이 있는 것 처럼 만들었던 것 같아요. 제가 두분의 채널을 보기 때문에 당연히 방송에 나오는 부분은 사실이 아니라고 생각하지만, 만약 그 방송만 봤다면 방송에서 연출한대로 믿을 수도 있을 것 같다는 생각도 드네요. 앞으로 두분과 가족분들에 대해 오해하시는 분이 없었으면 좋겠어요! ^_^

I really like your videos and this video must have been a load off your chests! Your videos are authentic and not overly dramatic. Television often needs to appeal to a large audience, hence sensationalism is a way to keep many viewers interested. You might also want to consider that you guys are lucky to be able to bridge cultures and open people's eyes to meaningless stereotypes. Keep making the videos that portray what you want to say and merry Christmas :)

며칠전에 인터넷으로 두분 방송분이 캡쳐되어서 떠도는걸 봤어요. 구독자로서 평소 생활이랑 다르게 비춰져서 두분이 속상하시겠다고 생각했었는데 이렇게 영상 올라오니 좋네요! 지금은 여러 시선들, 여러 말들 많겠지만 시대가 지날 수록 점점 줄어들겠죠? 저희 세대, 저희 다음 세대는 좀 더 달라지길 바라면서.. 항상 응원합니다!

I really like what you guys are talking about. 이번 비디오 보기 전까지 그런 논란이 있었다는 것도 몰랐지만 올려주시는 vlog 영상들 보면서 여러가지 편견들에 대해 생각 해 볼 수 있었고 또 많이 허물 수 있었다는 말을 하고 싶어요. 물론 그것만을 목적으로 보는 것은 아니지만요ㅎㅎ 늘 좋은 영상 감사해요

I absolutely love your videos! Your sincerity about living as a married couple in Korea is not only interesting but quite educational on all levels. You touch in relationships, challenges, traditions and life in Korea. We can relate to so many topics you cover. I also enjoy your excursions around Korea as part of your usual activities. I feel the same way as you guys, I'm in an "international" relationship too and people from both our countries often remark at how we must have a lot of issues regarding cultural differences, but it's just not true. It seems like people project a lot of their own prejudices onto couples that they don't understand.

방송에서 보여지는 것 이외에 더 크고 많은 삶이 있을텐데 최대한 자극적으로 뽑아내려는 미디어가 지향하는 방향도 아쉽고, 또 두 분 다 마음고생 하신게 느껴져서 안타깝네요. 😭 이 비디오로 오해가 많이 해소되었으면 좋겠어요. 그리고 이 채널을 보면서 보통의 일상이 가져다주는 평화로움을 모두가 느꼈으면 더 좋겠어요. 오늘도 잘 봤어요~!! 😄😄😄👍

My boyfriend is korean and we've been together for over a year now. Yes, we do have our differences but that's normal between any relationship. A lot of people would look down at us and telling me how can i deal with the cultural differences. I know and understand his culture and he does too. We care and love each other for who we are and resepect each other cultures. We do plan to get married and have kids in the future and I hope more people would understand that all relationships are different and in this century multicultural couples are becoming more and more common and that's a good thing.

얼마전에 한 커뮤니티 에서도 잠시 이슈가 되었던적이 있어요.전 그 방송을 보지 못해서 두분을 그런 게시물로 만나는게 당황스러웠어요. 읽으면서 걱정했구요..그런데 저를 포함한 많은 구독자들이 사실이 아니라고 했어요. 두분의 말씀처럼 너무 포커스가 그쪽으로 맞춰줬다구요. 실제로 유튜브채널을 통해 저희가 본 규호씨의 집은 오히려 여전히 가부장적인 문화가 남아있는 다른 집들 보다 평등하고 유쾌하다구요. 두분의 유튜브채널도 소개하고 에피소드도 이야기 하면서 많은 분들이 동의도 해주셨어요. 그러니까 너무 신경쓰지 않으셨으면 좋겧어요.🙂처음 두 분의 영상를 접하고 나서부터 주말을 참 따뜻하게 마무리 하고 있어요. 항상 감사하다는 말을 전하고 싶었는데 오늘 댓글에서 나마 인사를 전하네요. 영어 실력이 부족해서 한국어로 남기지만 언제나 응원합니다😊

Very informative vid you guys.☺ I mean if the public eye want to see how international couples live, they can watch channels like yours to get a better "inside peek" on how they live. Can't get any "real" than that. 😊 BTW... your Christmas lights... All I thought was, "Huh... it looks like the flux capacitor in the time machine on Back to the Future..." LOLS😂😆😂😂 And that thought distracted me though out the vid. 😆

This is the sad reality of Korean TV shows portraying foreigners living in Korea and multicultural families... I also have a friend who has been with her korean boyfriend for more than 4 years, she has a good relationship with her mother-in-law, and even though they do have some conflicts from time to time, they discuss it and overcome it. But isn t that normal in any kind of relationship? Yet again, Korea wants to show they are becoming multicultural society, that foreigners are nothing strange and koreans should start to accept them like normal people and not aliens, yet this kind of shows just make higher the barriers and the prejudices.. 휴... I used one of your videos in one of my classes (social studies) to show that the situation is not all black, and my professor (i study in korea and my professor is korean) was so relieved that there are actually intercultural families who take their time to explain how different the reality is. thank you for this video too!

I heard other K-vlogger talking about how the Korean entertainment twists the truth for the sake of views.Like Simon and Martina, when they were still in Korea decided not to participate in more TV-shows, because the Korean TV was not a nice place to work with. I am in UK, so I never saw the show you mention, but I must say that Kyuho's family seemed very nice, and Kyuho's mom was so nice to Sarah. I do not get why someone would make comments without checking out the situation from all sides.

저희 가족들도 추석이나 설날에 제사를 간소화해서 해요ㅎㅎ 다만 예전에는 선조들을 기리는 명절이었다면 현대에는 자주 못 보는 친척들과 담소를 나누는 자리로 변화했다고 생각해요

Whoever ever watched your channel would know that program was exaggerated for the entertain's sake which is still quite inappropriate, in my opinion. I only know the link that does not offer any kind of sub except for Korean. I also searched on EBS, the network, official KZfaq channel but it seems like they did not upload this episode :( I could not find in any title, even with official title that they used on website. www.ebs.co.kr/tv/show?prodId=114480&lectId=10304697 This link will lead you directly to the video but as I said it only offers Korean sub.

세라 왕팬으로서 정말 잘 봤습니다!! 5년차 국제커플이고 저희 커플도 별로 싸우지 않는데요(1년에 한두번..?) 국제커플을 단편적으로만 겪어왔던 사람들(미디어, 극단적 뉴스 등)은 언어가 통하지 않으니까 싸우지 않는거다, 한쪽이 아시안이라 참는거다.. 이런소리를 많이 해요. 쇼에서 비춰지는 '외국인 아내의 고생, 갈등 클리셰'에 반감을 가지고 있어서 세라규호씨처럼 일상적인 모습을 보여주는 유투버가 있어 정말 위안받아요^_^

저도 가끔씩 티비에서 하는 국제커플 갈등문제를 다루는 프로그램을 보는데, 부정적인면을 부각시키려고 하는 것은 몰랐네요. 그냥 커플, 고부간의 자연스러운 갈등을 보여주는 줄 알았는데, 그런 커플만 찍다니.. 사실 피디나 방송국 입장에서는 행복한 모습만 보여주는게 자극적이지 않고, 재미가 없다고 생각하는 것 같네요. 아무튼 이런 오해들이 잘 풀렸으면 좋겠습니다. :)

I'm with you - would love to see more shows on Korean TV where multi-cultural marriage is seen as a positive. Can you imagine if Korean dramas covered this topic? We have a multi-cultural family and it's added a richness to be sure. Thanks for sharing this video! Have a great week guys. :))

남윤희 제가 알기론 제사에 쓰는 밤은 깍는다 라고 하는게 아니라 친다라고 표현해요 이건 제사에 사용하는 밤만은 특별한 방법으로 깍아야 하기 때문인대 그래서 대부분 집안에선 그집안 어른이 깍아요 아니쳐요

사실 저도 세라와 규호가 국제커플이라서 한국의 제사 문화를 어떻게 이해하고 견뎌낼 지 궁금했는데.. 추석이나 설날 영상 보면서 다행이 트러블 없이 잘 하는구나 했습니다 :) 혹여 제사가 힘들더라도 그 부분에 대해선 결혼하기 전에 규호님(?)이 세라님(?)에게 얘기해줬을거라 생각돼요! (호칭이 어렵네요^^;) 워낙 TV는 과장된 것들도 많고 꾸며진 내용들도 많아서 믿지 않지만 혹시라도 누군가 그 프로그램 내용 그대로 믿는다면 꼭 이 영상을 보셨으면 좋겠네요ㅠ,ㅠ 세라님(?) 말대로 그렇게 보수적인 집안이었다면 결혼을 좀 더 생각해봤겠죠?!😊 항상 응원하고 있고 영상도 재밌게 보고 있습니다! 다음주엔 비모도 영상 속에서 볼 수 있길 바라며 화이팅입니당💞

안녕하세요. 약 반년동안 만나고 있는 외국인 친구가 추천을 해줘서 약 반년동안 함께 정말~~~~!!!!!!!! 재밌게 보고 있습니다. 국적도 다르고 문화도 다르지만 서로 좋아하는 사람과 평생 함께 할 수 있다니 정말 부럽고 또 저희 또한 매주 영상을 볼때마다 기분이 좋아지고 힐링이 됩니다. 저희는 아쉽게도 일월말이면 헤어지게 되지만 덕분에 즐거운 추억을 많이 남기고 있습니다. 동영상을 보고 후원, 석촌호수, 투고 셀러드 등등 저희의 데이트 코스 길잡이가 되어주셨어요. ㅎㅎ 그리고 매주 데이트를 할 때 항상 규호&세라 커풀을 찾으면서 다닙니다.ㅎㅎㅎ 근데 아쉽게 엇갈리게 되는거 같네요.... 저희는 신당동 떡볶이 타운을 가운데 두고 약수역 신당역 근천에 살고 있습니다. 얼마나 소름이 돋았는지.ㅎㅎㅎㅎ 신당동 떡볶이 타워나 남산 그리고 동호대교를 지나는 영상을 볼때마다 우연히 만날수 있겠지 하는 생각을 하곤해요.^^ 그리고 요즘 겨울이라 날씨가 춥기도 해서 새롭게 방문할 곳이 없으실거 같아서 추천 해드리려고 댓글 남겨요.!!! 제 생각에는 서대문 형무소, 전쟁 기념관 이 두곳이 지금같은 날씨에 가기 좋은곳이라고 생각합니다.^^ 서대문 형무소에서 일해본 경험이 있기 때문에 외국인 분들도 많이 방문하시고 의미있는 데이트가 될것 같습니다. 그리고 버스를 타면 명동이나 강남까지 금방 가기 떄문에 호두과자나 떡볶이 드시러 두 곳 다 방문 하실 수 있으실 겁니다.!!! 그럼 즐거운 한 주 되세요.!!! 정말 응원합니다.!! 아 그리고 조만간 저희도 조그마한 편지 보낼거에요.!!

영상을 볼 때마다 느끼는거지만 두 분(특히 세라가 한국문화에 대해 이야기할때)이 굉장히 중립적이라는 것을 굉장히 좋게 보고 있습니다. 이 비디오의 주제처럼 미디어는 쉽게 왜곡되기 마련이고 의도치않게 시청자들에게 잘못 전달될 수도 있는데 두 분은 그것에 굉장히 신경을 쓰신다는게 느껴져서, 그리고 어떤 특정 문화나 생각을 주입하고 시청자의 생각을 특정 의도를 가지고 바꾸려 하지 않는다는 것 때문에 영상을 볼때마다 편하게 볼 수 있는 것 같습니다. 앞으로도 지금처럼만 해주시면 좋을 것 같습니다 :) 좋은 하루 되세요.

저는 국제결혼하고 한국에서 생활한지 2년 정도 됬는데요.매우 공감되네요^^ 와이프나라에도 그런 방송이 있는데 타국에서 고생하고 시어머니와의 갈등 뭐 이런걸 중심적으로 요구하더라구요...;;

제사는 1년에 한번이구요.차례가 1년에 설날 추석 두번이죠.제사는 돌아가신 날 전날 저녁 늦게 지네죠. 차레는 명절 아침에 지내구요.

You both strike me as very calm and level-headed and it’s hardly surprising that you don’t experience a lot of the “intercultural conflict” that people-or, at least, the Korean networks-imagine. (Obviously, _everyone_ has occasional misunderstandings or disagreements.) There are things that couples in harmonious, long-lasting relationships do (search for _Gottman seven principles_ -John Gottman is a researcher in marital stability) and it seems like you do a lot, if not all, of them, which is one reason why your videos are so nice to watch. The “cultural differences” don’t amount to much, if you do those. In fact, those differences just provide more opportunities to appreciate and support the other person.

전에 들은 말 중에 다큐멘터리같은 것이 실화, 사실이라고 논픽션이라고 하지만 사람의 손을 타고 생각을 타고 편집을 거쳐 나오기 때문에 픽션이라는 말을 들었는데 그 말에 저는 굉장히 공감을 해요. 뭐든지 그것만 보고 판단하는 것은 굉장히 안좋은 것 같아요ㅠ 이 영상으로 오해가 다 풀렸으면 좋겟어요!!🙏🏻

고정관념이란게 참...ㅎㅎㅎ 저도 방송보면서 과장된 부분이 있다 생각 했었는데요 사실 비슷한 이슈로 국제커플에대한 방송들이 많이 있잖아요... 그냥 생각없이 보면 그 프로그램이 의도한대로 인식하게되는 경우가 대부분일거 같아요 그러한 방송때문에 오히려 국제커플들이 주변에서 이런저런 이야기를 더 들을 수 있잖아요?!(안그래도 고정관념때문에 이런저런 이야기를 듣는데말이죠;;;) 뭐 여튼 저도 비슷한 입장이라 세라&규호씨 영상보면서 힘내고 있습니다^^ 오늘도 잘 봤구요 쉐어도 완료~~ㅎㅎ 그럼 다음 영상에서 봐요^^

well that's typical of all networks wanting to show drama :/ . Since, you still have a good relationship with the network, maybe ask them to do a show that actually portrays your life? my mom and dad are an international couple and from my experience never really had an huge large blowouts because culture or anything else.
