Drill and tap those hubs for a grease fitting and fill them full of grease, and the trusses go on the bottom of the axle.

i worked on sail and traveled with him for years. 2.5 tons on it were such a pain in the ass lol. hopefully if you keep that truck within a few feet of the ground they hold up for ya. if not 5 tons wouldnt be the worst swap ever. meritors or axle techs youd have to redo the whole truck because of geometry.

I have rebuild those axles before. when you pull out the actual axle shaft make sure you hold it straight. otherwise the balls toward the wheel hub will fall out. The hub has two brass bushing on top and bottom you might wanna check that as well. Once you get the axles out of the housing there is two seal plate one on each side that you wanna change.that keeps the gear oil from leaking out. A slide hammer is good for that. 🤘

Hindsight.... Probably should have went through the grease in those bearings after it was full of pond water and sat for a long time.

A good trick for if you're taking out old races is weld a nice hot bead all the way around the inside of the race and the heat should cause the race to shrink enough to wear it should almost pop out relatively easy. And install a new one put the new race in the freezer for a little while will help with installation

Mud vehicles have to be meticulously maintained. Constant electrical maintenance and greasing. Custom drains and zerks and tubes full of grease to inhibit rust. Constant tearing down to clean. Mud is wet sandpaper too. Destroys everything
