Most borders throughout the Pacific are still closed due to the pandemic. But, New Zealand has an application for vessels needing major refit work…and that’s definitely us!
We applied, were approved, and now we’re setting sail for a 1,300 nautical mile voyage from the tropics in The Kingdom of Tonga to the wilds of winter in New Zealand. We’ll drop 20 degrees in Fahrenheit and latitude. (hello roaring 40's)
It's our most ambitious voyage yet and is supposed to be a non-stop 10-day passage. But, we have a brutal start that has us altering the course just three days in.
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

Been looking at a lot of "sailing vids", seen many of the Wynns', but for me this one stands out. It was the "sailing isn't all fun" video that is just not out there as a rule. It was candid, they were quite relatable, and it came across as real. Thank you and stay strong and keep the videos coming.

I agree, I’ve watched 100’s of videos. This one is for some reason, very relatable. I’m looking for their link to Patreon now, been considering it for awhile, but now I’m sold. The thought in my mind, “It must have been a major pain to keep filming while one is sick and sailing through rough seas. The Wynns have truly earned our support. Furthermore, any money we send them looks like it will be consumed when they get to the boat yard.

Hahaha, start singing.. the weather started getting rough the tiny ship was tossed. Had it not been for the courage of the captain the tiny ship would be lost. Haha, Gilligan's island. Always have your ditch bag ready. Matchs, tolet paper, water, dry beans, flash light, axe, knife, fishing gear, in gall, force winds some old boats just break in half. On a brighter note, it would make one hell of a movie. Ever watch " A drift ". They said it could never happen also.

I served as a Sonar Technician aboard a US Navy Knox Class Frigate, the USS Brewton out of Pearl Harbor. These Frigates have a bow mounted sonar, and combined with the single screw, it makes for a rough ride in stormy seas. During my first rough weather event, half the crew were new sailors, and the smell of puke eventually permeated the entire ship, including the forward berthing compartment where I was assigned. The C.O. turned the ship into the whitecaps to help prevent roll. Since we were forward near the bow, we endured an up-and-down high speed elevator type ride, up to the crest of a swell and crashing down into the next trough (repeat, repeat, repeat...). This lasted for a few days. I slept very little and was required to stand watch as was every other Seaman Apprentice. As any Sailor knows, you can't just pull in to port and anchor when in the middle of the Pacific. I have never been sicker in my life! Unexpectedly, after the storm, I earned my 'Sea Legs". From that point on, I never got seasick again... BTW, I noticed most all of the metal parts aboard you vessel are stainless steel. At least you don't have to worry about polishing brass! Fair Winds and Following Seas...

This video provides a stark dichotomy of both the good & bad of a testing passage. The tranquil period of sitting together on the bow , a moment of clarity & contentions. While grounded on the challenges of brutal sailing but the digging deep within soul to endure sea sickness mixed with on the fly repairs, truly paying your dues. Honest, accurate and orchestrated sailing video, continued excellent production by the Wynn Team. Bravo! Tony in New Mexico.

Isnt sailing the perfect metaphor for life??? "What doesnt kill you makes you stronger", "Its always darkest before the dawn", "We plan, God laughs" etc, etc.

Hi guys thank you for making my life way easier, by waching your episodes, instead going through all this mystery myself, I was sailing for last 50 years on almost every type of waters, now in comfort of my basement couch I am sailing and exploring areas with you ,where I wouldn't be ,because world is so big, and life to short , keep doing what you doing you are a real entertainment, I am waching others ,but you bring ,something different, I feel I am on you boat with you , amassing feeling. ALL THE BEST ,can't wait to see your new HH on the water..... maybe one day I will leve my comfortable couch, and come to see you when you be back in to Caribbean. ❤️ Marek

After spending 35 years going to sea in my experience there are two kinds of sailors those that get seasick and those that lie about it. Nothing to be embarrassed about. Love the videos BTW.

In my experience not getting seasick is about knowing what will make you seasick and avoiding it. Sounds a bit basic, but after studying the condition I've learned that avoiding four physical and one mental state will greatly reduce the risk. 1. Cold: Most often seasickness is the result of the body shutting down non-essential systems because energy deficiency, and being cold will deplete your energy real quick. 2/3. Thirst/Hunger: It follows that keeping energized BEFORE you lose your appetite is key. For crossings I try to make sure that my crew is well fed before leaving, and that there is easy access to quick carbs 24/7. 4. Tiredness: Obviously once you get drowsy things will go down hill, and unless you can activate yourself at the wheel, nothing will chase the green away from your face as hitting the bunk. 5. Anxiety: Now here's the kicker. If you're the slightest bit uncomfortable about your own safety or the safety of the vessel, getting the sleep you need in a cot that decided it wants to be a rodeo stallion is going to be hard. I've had to go below and bunk with fellow crew members to comfort them to sleep. Not easy if you're the only watch master in board. Hence the importance of having a trustworthy autopilot, and ideally a radar/AIS/radar-alarm. Even better a seaworthy steward who is comfortable going below in all weather to keep things tidy in case it gets a little funky. The slightest smell of diesel or other strong odors can spark a domino puke-fest that will leave the skipper tied to the helm until the crew comes out on the other side. Bottom line is that anything you can do as a captain to increase the comfort and mental well-being off your crew before and during a crossing will pay unbelievable dividends :-) A bit af music in the cockpit, a quick jig to lighten spirits followed by some hot soup can really turn the tide.

I see you're gradually putting on more clothing. All sailors who come south to NZ say the same thing about how cold it is, but hey that's the price one pays for being in the tropics for too long. The top of NZ weather wise is not the best in winter but better than others and the ships chandlery is great. Bye the way I know your already there. Cheers.
