Colin L. Powell was appointed Secretary of State by George W. Bush on January 20, 2001, after being unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He served for four years, leaving the position on January 26, 2005. He was the first African-American to serve as Secretary of State.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I suspect this video is going to have another surge of popularity with his passing. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and public servant. He will be missed. But, what about "change maker?" At Speakers Speak LIVE, we make a point of studying amazing professional speakers. Mr. Powell demonstrates amazing public speaking skills here including connecting with the audience within 10 seconds, being able to continually keep the audience engaged, use of humor (far more humor than you'd expect from a military guy), and giving substantial content of value. Unlike most TEDx talks I've heard, he really does just sound like he's talking with each person one-on-one. What a great example and an amazing message we can all learn from and use for years to come.

I have never been a Republican, but I always liked Colin Powel. I admired him and I think he was an amazing leader and an amazing human being. A good speaker with a great sense of humor too. RIP Mr Powel, thanks for your service and for all you did for our country. You are a hero to many people. I will miss you too. I got very sad when I heard the news of your death, but you are in a better place now. God bless your soul.

I really like this talk and I think people misunderstand structure to mean old fashioned and cold. Children thrive in an environment where theres not only love but in an environment where they learn how to be independent and an environment that understands that there is no cookie cutter child. The school system in itself is actually quite rigid and tends to fail some children. Children of abilities should be encouraged to thrive in a learning environment but at the same time taught principles of respect for others and one self. I liked the generals honesty. It was engaging.

People say that Colin Powell was a monster. I dont see a monster I see a man who truly cares about our kids. Kids absolutely need structure. Colin knows what he is talking about. Collin Powell is not monster he cares about our future and our future is our kids.

I agree that children need structure but he's basing structure on an antiquated military (Prussian) methodology that trains children not to think but to obey. Considering his background this is understandable. We need to teach children structure in a way that gives them respect for themselves and each other and also encourages critical thinking. The majority of schools in North America base their teaching methods on a Prussian system from the early 19th century. If we continue to teach lessons from a military culture then we are not moving in the right direction for a sustainable future.

He also failed in the STEM fields he started out with in college (fields that America desperately needs to fill gaps in), nor does he sound very academic at all. This does not help his argument in the slightest.

Interesting how his speech had no inflammatory rhetoric. How his experience in NY seemed in no way to mirror that of JayZ or others who would have you believe police are hateful monsters who kill minorities at will. His message is one of hope and a call to action.. Not protest, but rather stay out of trouble, raise your children, keep your head on straight and have some self control.

I never said that police brutality didn't exist, I believe I commented on how his talk did not focus on hate but rather hope. However, thanks for info, I guess. There are bad people in every facet of life, There are bad doctors, bad lawyers, bad parents and yes bad police. However, their not common.

I have read a lot of the comments in here and I have to say that there are some REALLY stupid ignorant people out there. I agree with what he says in this video. Kids do NEED structure. They do need to have somebody to teach them in a way that they understand the US would be at the top again.

I agree with some of what he says, but I disagree that children need to be made into these rigid, submissive robots. Children love to learn, and they are naturally curious and experimental. We need to cultivate that curiosity and help children find something that really interests them, help them to fall in love with learning and with knowledge. Forcing them to stand at ease is taking the easy way out, because it shuts off their brains...

I agree with you but if children lack the headstart he speaks of, cutting ther minds down to the working minimum is sadly the cheapest way to "integrate" them [until the ptsd induced perception addiction has to get them back in line].

This sort of militaristic approach is not conducive for producing innovative and open-minded leaders. This "yes sir/no sir" mentality is present in many inner city schools and has mostly turned children away from education. Discipline, sure, it's needed- but teaching in this extreme manner will never develop independent students with critical thinking abilities. All one has to do is review current research from the learning sciences and developmental psychology

I refuse to think that respect and discipline being taught with war/military-like conducts will ever bring anything positive. Respect and discipline should be taught to be good because it is the "smart" way to do things. Being respectful and having discipline are qualities you develop because you use your "intelligence" and realize that this is what will better help you fulfill yourself. This man only defines who he is by the "others," as in "the other kids are going to be criminals, not mine."

***** General Powell may have been hesitant about Iraq, but still he was the one who decided to give the speech which he knew was false. He's a military person and they only get credit, notice and promotions during wars. Peace is the worst thing that can happen for a military person who wants to advance in his career.

***** Powell was not coerced into buying a car or some small thing, He gave a speech that set things in motion to start the WAR in Iraq, where thousands of people, both military and civilians were going to loose their lives, people were going to be left homeless, orphaned, cities destroyed by the bombings. I don't think General Powell is a wimp and can be pushed around. He knew what he was doing and knew the repercussions his actions were going to cause and he went on and gave the speech.
