If you don't mind me to add (as a german Klopse-Expert with years of study ;) ): for the broth, add 2 bay leaves and one peeled and cut in half onion to the water. For the meat, add one tea spoon of mustard and some of the liquid from the capers. For the sauce, you can add some vinegar and/or white wine (tea spoon). Your recipe is wonderfull however, nicely done ! :)

Oh my goodness this brought me back to my childhood. I haven’t made this in such a long time. I will make this again. My mom would fry the meatballs to brown them first then added just enough broth to steam them. Either way the cream sauce is the same( mom used sour or sweet cream, basically what she had on hand) and yes, boiled potatoes was a must for the side. Thank you!

Hi Anja. I just asked my mom if she had indeed fried the meatballs first or was I confused with another recipe. Yes, she did but only after my parents were married. I guess my dad preferred it that way, but no she hadn’t learnt that from home. 😁 how recipes change.

Thanks for bringing this back to my mind. I will make this asap in vegetarian version. My grandmother made these and I loved them. Now I don't eat meat anymore. What really makes them is the Kasper sauce.

I sure enjoyed watching that!!! I grew up with meatballs in caper sauce, my Dad was German and he taught my English Mum how to cook, so a lot of our food was of East Prussian origin! I got English comfort food at school and German food at home😊! I met my wife here in Canada, she kindly makes me meatballs in caper sauce! Strangely enough, the recipe comes from a French cookbook! My Dad’s and my wife’s MICS are enriched with egg yolk, not cream or sour cream! I am intrigued with the idea of sour cream, I’m going to show this video to my wife and see what she says! P.S. I have my first sour dough bread rising from your starter! I am an experienced baker but never with sour dough! I have formulated my own recipe, so I hope all goes well!!! Klaus

@@OurGabledHome Thank you so much for your reply. The Hot German Potato Salad I’m speaking of is baked. I believe the ingredients are: sliced potatoes, bacon, onion or green onion or both, in a zingy apple cider vinegar type sauce of sorts. I don’t believe there is any dairy, but there may be eggs. I wish I could remember, but I very young. Thank you 😊

Guten Morgen Anja - From our farm in New Hampshire! Thank you for this wonderful recipe. I am of Dutch decent, but was raised in a German neighborhood in Manchester, NH. Thank you it looks delicious! I can’t wait to make this! Do you have a recipe for German meatball soup Saur Klopsen? If it’s such a thing. My husbands grandmother from Germany made this meatball and potato soup (simmered with whole all spice berries) and is a family favourite. Sadly she passed away before she could teach me. Is this soup such a thing in Germany or perhaps it was her creation? As I’m having difficulty finding a recipe. Thank you 🙏🏻

Hi Heather, I am so glad you like this recipe! As for your husband's grandmother's recipe - I am not quite sure what it could be other than her own creation. You could use my meatball recipe as a launch pad and make it a bit more soupy and sour (by adding more lemon). Hope this helps and thank you for commenting 😊 ~ Anja

Some of my ancestors were from East Prussia, so "of course" we would have Königsberger Klopse. :-) Minus capers; no one in my family likes them. I didn't know that this was a popular dish elsewhere in Germany, too! ;-) :-) You wouldn't have other East Prussian recipes...? Great-grandma never wrote anything down, and so much got forgotten. Stokepuffer, maybe? Or Mohnkuchen? :-)

@@maikeadam5354 yes, poppy seeds. :-) Great-grandmother always baked two, called them Max und Moritz. :-D After the Wilhelm Busch story.
