There is so much that can be done for the management of arthritis in dogs and cats that does not involve giving them drug medications, and every holistic arthritis management plan should include some or all of the things I'll discuss with you today.
Arthritis treatment must consider the whole animal as well as their environment. Home remedies and management strategies can go a long way to keeping our senior dogs and cats comfortable well into their old age.
While drugs are by far and away the most effective form of treatment there are also plenty of other options that can either delay the need to start these, or that can mean we get away with giving them at a lower dose.
After diagnosis, a long term structured treatment plan needs to be formulated. We need to keep in mind that we are treating rather than curing the condition, as well as the fact that arthritis is a progressive disease. This means that what may work at first will need tweaking and changing as our pet ages and their disease becomes worse.
In this video I discuss several different aspects that can all help in the management of arthritis:
1 - weight loss
2 - diet and supplementation
3 - exercise and physical therapies
4 - environmental management.
This holistic approach supplements other treatment strategies. they are generally easy to implement and need not be expensive.
