Hey My Kindred Spirits 👀. 2019 is my debt-free year. I owe $26k on one card. Just 2wks ago I negotiated three monthly paymenrs of $3340 for payment. Yes...I'm only paying about $10k/26k. That's a 16k writeoff. I also closed two other accts, one was Sam's, with 24% APR. While I did not negotiate a smaller payoff settlement (at least for now), I do get to pay it off with a 0% APR. Thanks for your informative and useful vids.

New subscriber here, enjoying your channel! One caveat about credit card debt: there is a a statute of limitations on old debt purchased by creditors, and by responding to creditors or acknowledging the debt you will be reseting the time on the debt and you can be hounded again and sued.

PLUS, I even got a “yes” and didn’t have to pay everything upfront. They just removed the 30% to help me out! 😭😭😭 I’m so happy to see your channel growing and your subbies increasing. Get all debt pay offs and negotiations with debt collector's "IN WRITING"!!! Ask for it to be deleted from your credit report if on it, especially if it hasn't been on your credit report but for a few years. Some would say not to pay it if on there for 5 or 6 years because it will only be on your credit report for 7 years but if you are not worried about your credit score right away go ahead & pay off but know it will restart it on your report unless you get it deleted from your report. Debt collector's will lie, so I requests that they send me an email saying, "if I pay the agreed upon amount that it will be considered paid in full & I will owe no more on it & it will be deleted," BEFORE paying them ANY money, then request a receipt by email when it is paid. Also, make sure you pay with a check that you mail or a card that is not your main money account because they can take more out if you give them your card info. So, using a Visa card or an account you have opened solely to pay off debt with only the amount you have agreed upon in the account will be best (e.g. online checking accounts are great for this b/c they are free & you can open many of them w/ out worrying). Dont forget to get it taken off your credit report if on your credit report. Keep all records in case it shows up years later on your credit again & by a different creditor. But I have seen a family member pay off a debt that was on his credit report for a year but it didn't effect his score very much after paying it. It may go down about 10-30 points but will go right up if you are practicing good habits with debt (e.g. keeping balances on credit cards below 30% at all times or best practices to pay in full every month). Meaning if you have a credit limit of $1,000 then make sure your balance is below $300. But if you pay balances in full every month you'll see a quicker jump in your score.

I've asked for it in writing in the pass for a family member...I wouldn't ask for an email because a lot of electronic things are not admissible in court. A letter on with their company letterhead in an envelope addressed from them...They cannot dispute in court. Also with all I know now...I wouldn't pay a collection agency. Knowing the law is on my side and that I Do Not owe them. You are right knowing the statute of limitation of the debt helps.. They cannot sue one...Once it runs out and one doesn't want to restart it...So one has to be very careful what one says. :))

Great ideas, as usual. Speaking of getting out of debt, there is controversy in the FI community regarding paying off your mortgage early vs. investing. I would love to hear your take on this subject. I am 50, have been underemployed and self-employed since 2006, and I found out about FI late in the game. I have a 15 yr. mortgage that was refinanced a little over year ago to get a lower rate (3.25%), and I only have 14 years left before I reach 64, so not long to build up my nest egg. My mortgage would be paid off before I would retire. I figure in my case if we pay off the mortgage early I will miss several years of compounding interest. I am not sure there is a "cut and dry" answer to the controversy and each case should be looked at individually, but would be interested in hearing your perspective. Thank you for your valuable content.

@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism Hi! Thanks for asking. I have $1200 in a Solo 401K so far, and will contribute $150 per month this year; my income alone is $19,000, and combined we bring home $44k; owe $56k on the house; other monthly expenses are $1,700. We have two sort of big ticket items we want to purchase before I retire, and those items will be paid for the end of 2020, then I will have $1,800/mo. to invest.
@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 5 жыл бұрын
@CmaxEnergi Wow! A 3.25% rate is awesome. Great move locking that in! Now to your question...Its really hard to answer because so many personal and financial factors have to be considered. However, from a mathematical standpoint dumping all your cash into a mortgage, and not also investing, is not the best investment. We know this because history tells us that investing will give us a higher return. But from a personal standpoint people like living debt free. Even if that debt is a very low interest mortgage. But there is also another side to this argument and it involves diversification of assets. Would your paid off mortgage be your only asset? Do you have stocks? Other passive income sources? Etc? A paid off mortgage, in our perspective is equivalent to CD; which is a good investment if you have other investments in higher yielding assets (i.e. stocks). We want to think more about this and try to develop a video that runs some scenarios. Stay tuned! And thanks for the question! - Amon

@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism Thank you for your insight. Yes, I do need to act fast, and we have been doing so. I did run the calculations, and I should have around $400k at 64. That will give me, at 4% withdrawal, $16k/year income. My SS benefits should be around $1100/mo., so that will give me around $2,400/mo. income. My husband's bring home income is around $30k, and he will still be working until 5 years after I retire. He will then receive a pension of $2,100/mo., plus social security benefits. That would be a gross of $4,500 mo. + his SS with $0 debt. That is a whole different scenario than you are thinking. but I could be missing something.

@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism Thank you. We are in rural PA, among the Amish. It is a very LCOL area, and we plan to stay here. We will definitely do some far away travel hacking at some point. But for now, we'd like to purchase a modest, used fifth wheel and truck and be able to do some RVing locally until then. Those two items are the "big ticket" purchases I have mentioned, and we will pay cash. Thank you for the encouragement. :)

Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed the information. In regard to your question, have you considered hosting a foreign exchange student? For instance, many students from Japan go to the US for 2 to 3 months and live with a host family/host. The host gets paid, not sure how much, and the student gets to practice English and attend a local school. The students in these programs are vetted by the placement programs. This is one option. Another is to rent out the room on a longer term basis but just like a landlord you should run a credit check, and depending on the laws in your area, you should also get a criminal record for the person. There is also Airbnb but there is a lot of turn-over and it can be a lot of work. We never had a problem with our Airbnb tenants but we also never rented a room in our house to them. We'll look into this question more and do a video. We like this topic a lot.

My husband vetted the people himself. He was home all the time because he was sick so i felt it was safer. We did have alot of characters, some great, some not so much. I do have a realtor that can do background checks..not free, but helpful. I also have an in depth rental agreement from this realtor that she graciously shared with me. I'm also planning on checking with an organization called Silvernest. They match you with people whose personalities would go well together. Of course now i am much more cautious about bringing someone into my home. Looking forward to your video on this❤

Love your videos!! You guys are "couple goals" 🤗...My husband and I just got married and merged our accounts. We have a ton of student loan debt and some credit card debt as well. We decided to really focus and get rid of the debt prior to trying to purchase a home. It is definitely a process and a challenge. We are still struggling to create a realistic budget. Our Food category is definitely a struggle to maintain. We alway seem to go over. Any suggestions on how to create a realistic budget?

tamalexa - LOVE that you and your husband are working on paying down debt together! Congratulations! I think the biggest thing about a budget is paying yourself first and/or paying off debt first. When this happens, it creates less opportunities to rationalize spending leftover money on "stuff." Since you and your husband are recently married and merged accounts, I'm assuming your joint budget is new. My suggestion for creating a realistic budget is to continuously manage it and refine it each month. Keep a more detailed account of how you spend food (if you feel like you're overspending on that category) so you can assess what is excess spending and what is reasonable. You might see a trend where you realize you're eating out too much, splurging at the grocery store, or buying routine snacks that add up. It's all a process. Perfection is not the key - just optimization. You guys got this!

Good advice. Many don't realize that their debt will follow them when SHTF. A global collapse may come soon and you don't want to be in debt. I paid mine off and I'm 64. Turned my remaining falling fiat $ into crypto and silver. I hodl the crypto on a private hardware wallet and keep my silver in my own posession. #GOETH !

Q*bert, if it gets to collections, your credit is already ruined or on its way since you missed so many payments. The reason you don’t want to pay collections is because you never owed the collection company anything. Your debt has been sold. If you make a deal and pay anything you’re are entering into an agreement with the collection company to pay them. You just have to ask them for proof you owe their company anything. Like a signed contract. They won’t have anything of course. Thank you my fellow KZfaq commenter.

I learned it from EXPERIENCE. I did a couple of barters that's what I call it. People try to take advantage yet there are some who are fair. Also one must really calculate one's time as businesses want to get the MOST for cheap and also if it's website building for an old dog who is hesitant to move to the next century. AKA people who have been around for years in local area and STILL don't have WEBSITE or Social media platforms in 2019. Those are the ones who also don't understand that they have to market the website and have promotions, etc. It's also quite tiring but I did have to come up with contracts because they also like to BLAME if things don't go wrong and they will try to withold the barter from their end. that's why I suggested.

@mbnich0269 try looking for free tools on Freecyle, craigslists, or the buy-nothing group in your city (see our video on buy-nothing here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7hpeqletqypoZc.html&lc=Ugy8-vYz-PInZwJrrAB4AaABAg) Another option is to ask your city what it would take to start one. The Oakland tool lending library was started by the community and most of the tools were donated. Your last option could be find a MakerPlace studio or DIY workshop. There maybe one in your city. Some have cheap memberships but some can also be very pricey. Hope that helps!
