Swades was a slow burn and only people with patience to understand the topic would appreciate it. Also the movie was ashutosh’s directorial venture right after lagaan, so maybe the expectations were sky high.

@@KrishanKumar-ec1ch lagaan wasn't the blockbuster you think it was. It was hit sure but it was released alongside Sunny deol's Gadar which was a monstrous success. The same thing with Swades, people didn't want serious Srk in a non glamorous village setting instead they went for the "real" Srk movie Veer Zaara that was still running in theaters. And I don't know what you meant by entertainment, to me if the story holds my attention and I like spending time with the characters then that's entertainment, both Lagaan and Swades (tho very different movies) succeeded at that.

@@shrisuryarathinam97 maybe the so called intellectually sound are the stupid ones. Afterall, nobody watches those movies, producers goes bankrupt, appeals to very small audience who doesn't go to theatre and watches it by pirating it (coz its the same experience anyway) and the audience are the saddest people who hate commercial movie more than they love their intellectual movie. On the flipside, a good commercial film compels you to watch it first day first show, gives total value for money. Producers happy, audience are happy (doesn't even know about intellectual movies existence)

@@VedPOP in what sense kgf is better than any average Mollywood movies?! It doesn’t matter if you are long enough in the industry because they are mediocre artists in every domains!!!! In my sense , as Martin Scorcese said once that anything to do green screen is no real cinema and I like to believe so and In my eyes , Rajamouli and co is just another Wizard who is good with pulling off masala and cringing contents which audience with sub par intellectual faculties seems to like the most !!! They will never get any awards but enjoy vast box office success but cinema is art not just business
@VedPOP
@VedPOP Жыл бұрын
@@shrisuryarathinam97 who decides what is cinema or not ? What is cinema ? Cinema is storytelling. Storytelling changes from culture to culture. Everyone has own type of storytelling culture, these stories appeal to their own target audience. And Martin scorcese only makes gangster movies and he doesn't need green screen. That's why he may not like it coz he don't have to use it and probably doesn't even know how to properly intregate it in his film, he's an old school filmmaker, he's not adept to technology, he's not that smart (don't put him in godlike status especially when he doesn't know wtf is he talking about) he's just an old man rambling. He still uses FILM reel camera and hates digital. Even when digital has higher quality and easier editing process. So, you can see he's just an stubborn old man. So you should make your own opinion instead of blindly following what the oldie says.

Swades, an inspiring film, a film about love for the country with brilliant acting..but unfortunately it flopped. Not sure what was great about SRK's performance. He has 3-4 (romantic, sad, comedy (?)) face experessions and he uses them in rote. In all his movies one sees just these 3-4 expressions. Give him a character with multiple and subtle shades and he still falls back on these 3 expressions. Acting is when one forgets the actor and only sees and remembers the character. In all his movies one sees ONLY SRK, irrespective of the character he is supposed to play.

@@ArpitSgh36 Yes, It happens to less talented and lazy actors who ends up being “just” a star. They keep playing the character that got them fame even if the character is vastly different. Similarly with SRK, he plays his DDLJ character with minimum variation in EVERY single movie. He just cannot play a tragic character (Devdas second half was disastrous portrayal ). Talented actors are like chameleons. They NEVER become a star. Nobody associates them with ONE character because in every movie, they are different, and people cannot pin them to ONE movie. Take Irfaan, Naseeruddin, Om Puri, Sanjeev Kumar, etc. Nobody equates them with ONE character because each character they played was unique.

Speaking of cult classics.. you guys need to watch Parinda (1989) starring Jackie (zatty) Shroff, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, and Anupam Kher.. and many more notable actors. It was way ahead of its time in story telling, direction, cinematography, lighting (which is mostly dark and realistic), editing and even acting (given the era). Some of RD Burman's finest compositions and Asha Ji's sweetest melodies. Despite being nearly a decade older, Parinda has nearly as gripping a plot as Satya and is definitely one of the finest gangster movies from Bollywood in that era.

Sholay was a flop when they first released it but then they changed the end and re-released it again which went on to become a blockbuster hit. However, Agneepath (the original) & Andaz Apna Apna was massive duds at the Box Office

Mera Naam Joker was one of the earlier cult classics but commercially a flop movie, which actually broke Raj Kapoor.

You should definitely do a watch along of No Smoking. It's a great film for a reaction, because it's such a mindfuck.

No smoking is still my fav acting performance of John... It's a great movie n u should definitely watch it not a watch along though I think bcoz it's too depressing much like grave of fireflies (completely different though)

All of the movie flops in this list pale in comparison to the mega flop Mera Naam Joker, Raj Kapoor's labour of love from 1970, which today is considered a classic.

Surprised Gangs of Wasseypur or Andaz Apna Apna did not make the list. Much bigger cult classics & part of pop culture than some others mentioned on the list.
