Great lines in this movie. One of my favourite: "We're not owners here, Karen. We're just passing through.

In my opinion this is a great, great movie. The direction, acting, script, location, music etc., etc were superb. I don't think the principal actors have done any better work and the human issues explored in it are profound. What makes it incredible is that it was based on a real life story. These people actually existed !

She loved him but just didn't know how to communicate it in a way that was good for both.

I have had a Finch Hatton view of relationships my whole life. I lack his charisma and his lifestyle, but his philosophy towards monogamous heterosexual relationships is the same as mine. It is an atypical philosophy so a person really needs to state his views right up front before there is an emotional commitment and someone has thoughts that they are going to get something that they aren't. The trick is to find someone with the same philosophy. Good luck on finding such a person but believe it or not, I did.

What is always missed in these renditions. Karen was struggling making the farm work. Deny’s at the end is already with felicity. Karen was bankrupt by the time she left Africa. Only her books saved her estate. Deny’s never helped or assisted in any way possible. In the meantime, I come and visit her. Beneath the great tree. My heroine and greatest inspiration.

When I saw the scene in the theater when she tells Redford that she "won't allowed it." I nearly cringed inside. I know any person women or men that would say that to me - I naturally would be insulted or feel disrespected as a human being because it isn't part of many like myself that shouldn't be treated as a "child." Alright if this is what you believe, I'm out of here. However, on the flip side of the coin - his lack of commitment, despite him saying he still wants to be with her, he would not commit in the standard most women want to have a committed relationship. This is what goes on now more than ever because people want "to have their cake and eat it too." It doesn't seem fair at all in any relationship which needs clarity to move forward in a relationship. So much sadness her side because society would not recognize a single woman so "marriage" was the only way to go. Perhaps in today's time, she would have felt more whole than before.

Karen published nor wrote anything about her intimate relationship with Dennis, or anyone for that matter. Where did the screen writer for the screenplay find this information? Or was it artistic license to create an incredible script???

At that time, women were still seen as property of men than individuals. No matter how independent she wanted to be, at that time unless her voice was going to muffled at the time because women at that time and even children were not seen as people but as property.
