The surgery video, I can 100% confirm that’s true. I’m a certified surgical technologist. For a total knee replacement, you are essentially making sure unnatural components held by cement stay in the body. The surgeon whacks them with a mallet so hard that you personally feel it in your bones. Eventually you get used to it.

I’m a nurse, and my husband is an orthopedic surgeon, I can fully attest to the veracity of the orthopedic TikTok 😂 Orthos tend to be jocks, dude dudes, it’s not neurosurgery. You may not realize the brute force required to relocate dislocated joints, hips in particular and yes, you have to really use muscle to get bits and bobs out prior to replacement. However, orthopedic surgeons tend to be happier in their professions than other types of surgeons. First off, the pay is GREAT, secondly you see patients actually get better (btw, spines are left to neuro 😂) and your patients come back in saying “better than ever!” “You fixed me!” “I can play tennis again!” Just happy boys playing with power tools all day long.

In case anyone is curious, the orthopedic surgery video is the removal of an intramedullary rod in the either the femur (thighbone) or tibia (shinbone). This is a long metal rod that goes through the medullary cavity (or, the marrow canal) of a bone and held in place by screws, and is used primarily for fractures. These rods are designed to stay permanently, and there’s really no need to remove them unless the patient was experiencing ongoing pain from it, or the rod/screws got bent.

I work in ortho, orthopedic surgery is literally like construction sometimes, including circular saws and mallets. That doctor looked like he was trying to remove a rod from the femur that they didn’t put in right the first time and they needed to redo it

For the surgery one, ortho surgery is basically doing construction except on bones and muscles, sometimes hardware gets stuck (like in the video) when you’re trying to remove it so you have to use a lot of force to get it out, but this is when hardware gets stuck, or when you’re trying to remove a previous implant or older hardware :-)
