The title says it all. I am now officially getting rid of the wood stove and switching to coal. I made the trip to Maine for two coal stoves and here they are complete with a restoration. Hope you enjoy.

I grew up in a home that used a wood & coal stove every day for supplemental heat. We just built a good wood fire in the stove then loaded in the coal. A good cast iron grate is essential to keep the red hot coals from cracking the floor of the stove. It was an open front Ben Franklin style stove with no gasketed doors. Saves a lot of work over using wood alone. Finding large lumps of coal was the trick. 3 or 4 lumps the size of a cantaloupe would burn for hours. A good blower or a heat exchanger will double or triple the stoves output instead of the heat going up the chimney.

I grew up in NH and my father purchased a Vermont Castings Vigilant wood stove in 1982 or so and it heated our whole home. We had the solid doors and thicker chromed handles that where straight with a little palm swell for the damper and doors. I have such fond memories of that stove.

Jim sets a good standard of workmanship! Because of him, I will be trying to repair my shop roof with some timber bracing this year. Wish me luck. 50 years ago my father, older brother and I built a timber-frame barn out of the fir trees we cut on the property and a boatload of recycled lumber. Really did not know for sure what we were doing, but it stood for 30 years, and only came down, because he sold the lot where it stood, and he wanted the timbers for firewood.

I dare say you too will have a glint in your eye when you'll complete your task to Jim's standard. I wish you well in your endeavours & hope we might take a peek at your undertaking? Kind regards.

Actually your supposed to pour the anthracite coal into the stove from the overhead fill point from the coal bucket. That's why the coal bucket has a pour point built into it. Once you have built up a layer of coals you simply bury the coals with coal and you will hear snap, crackle, and pop Rice Krispies! That is how I was taught to fire a coal stove. And now for the real test. What does the wife think about the new to you stove? Enjoy!

All coals will burn, but the higher the bitumastic content the more you will get Creosote and tars distilling out in your chimney! This, when not cleaned out regularly is why you get chimney fires! Anthracite (or Hard Coal) is considered to burn the hottest .... but will often "spit" small hot pieces out when burning, so a bit of care is in order! Also you need to make sure your coal is dry as you will waste heat in driving the water out into steam which would otherwise go into heating your home. The key to a good burn, regardless of fuel used id the airflow! You need to allow the air to pass through the coals and then after the burn to exit up through the chimney .... this causes a "draw" on the fire as the hot gas in the chimney rises forcing fresh air in through your air vents and through the coal. You need to make sure the coal is not too small otherwise it will restrict this flow. Giving your fire a good riddle every few hours will also allow the cinders at the bottom to drop into the pan and leave room for fresh coal to be added ..... it can appear to be a steep learning curve, but you will pick it up quickly ;O)
@canninrm
@canninrm 6 жыл бұрын
thanks so much Dave, I'll keep trying. I was told once you place the coal on either charcoal or hot wood embers not to disturb it and I'm not sure if this correct. bob

I've run 2 different coal stoves, the first was an Austrian kitchen stove, the 2nd was an old pot belly parlor stove. in both cases I could only really burn coal when the temps were 10F or less. Otherwise I burned wood in them. It does take a bit of time to learn each stove, which coal it prefers and how best to manage the burn. I love both stoves 1 I still have and will use again. Cost wise I don't know if you really save anything, but it sure is a nice heat. Good luck!

Jim, There is an old rule of thumb my dad and uncle used everyday. If it works, why replace it? Is the questionable item simply not up to your idea of how it should look? Is it working correctly? ( I'd say yes ) or do you simply not like the looks due to it being a little bit bent from hours of use? As nice as that is working other than new seals for the front doors I wouldn't change a thing. Might want to look into if the manufacturer makes a hot water tank attachment you could pipe into the house to further reduce your heating cost. Nice job Jim There is nothing more comfortable than a nice coal fire to sit in front of but a warning, it can be addictive. You can easily find you've wasted a day or more simply relaxing watching the fire. Particularly when the old Lady wakes you up to say dinners ready mumbling about you wasting a whole day again. But she will love the way the new to you stove heats the house. Nice job Jim

Will the wood stove migrate to the barn, or be sold? Maybe the ash pan door gasket has been missing for quite some time and it got away from the previous owner. I've had that happen with coal and wood. Not much scarier than when your stove is visibly glowing through to the outside of the metal. Not sure at what temp cast iron starts to glow cherry red, but I've been there before on a stove that needed gaskets replaced. Desert climate on steroids in the living room and freezing in the kitchen that winter. Bedroom in the middle was just about right though. That was in a three room concrete block shack in south central Indiana almost thirty years ago.

Some one packed that poor stove plum chucked full of good coal and almost melted the stove down. I'm thinking a well ran coal stove should not go over 300-600 degrees on the fire box. Just depends on the stove unit. That's a beautiful coal fire.

Suburban UK chap here. Coal stove went in last Feb. Don't run central heating anymore. £55 p/m fixed cost. Happy that, for now, anthracite is a bit of a 'secret'. I guess most people are unable or unwilling to install chimney liners themselves and are therefore deterred by the installation overheads if using tradesmen. I got stove, cowl, liner and scaffold rental all in for £600 as a DIY job. Natural gas as a heating method is now beyond the point of affordable for many people. There's at least one house on my street using a dirty old house coal fire but there's zero enforcement. I worry that we are going backwards in this country!

My grandfather and mother used coal ashes all winter on the walkways and the driveways. Lot easier then slipping and sliding all over the place. Also instead of using kindling to start a coal fire. Ask at the local tractor supply for coal igniters about one inch square with a fuse from an m-80. Bury the sucker in the middle of the grate cover about an inch deep and light the fuse, warning it burns at right around 1200 degrees so close the door as soon as you light the fuse. Easiest way to light a coal fire, bar none.

Wow, thats cheap. Are you going to run both stoves? About how much do you think you will burn per day to warm the house? Just curious. I am always looking for more efficient ways to do things. I get my wood for free, but I have to go pick it up in log form and bring it home and cut and split it. Then we typically get maybe 8 hours tops burn time with a fully packed wood stove.

TTC, I grew up in a rev war era house. It was heated with wood then coal, a stove in every room. I use to spade turn the various veggie gardens and often found partially burned anthracite along with buttons and clay tobacco pipes. The old timers didn't know about potential hazards but people lived long lives. I would not practice coal ash disposal on my property. Rodale's OG mag even reccomended cutting wood ash use, a good source of K, back to once ever other (or 3rd?) year over heavy metal content in fire wood.

If you have a dual fuel stove you need to remember they burn differently with different fuel! Coal burns best with the air coming from below and passing through the coals ...... Wood burns best with the air coming from above, with the lower air intake fully closed! I have never tried Charcoal though ;O) Wood burns hotter (and quicker) than coal, so if you want to only stoke the thing occasionally Coal is good ... if you want the heat and don't mind being wed to the fore Wood is king! If it is a new unit you may have problems with a mismatched flue size (worth checking it out) and similar draw related problems .... do you have a damper in the chimney / flue? Is it fully open? Are your airways blocked (don't laugh ... I have seen new stoves with incorrectly installed air vents) Are your fire Bricks all installed? Have fun playing round with it!

+Robert Canning check your draft, if it doesn't get enough draft it won't burn very well.
@TheTradesmanChannel
@TheTradesmanChannel 6 жыл бұрын
+Dave W hello Dave. This one is coal only, air comes from below...excellent draft in my flue, stove is designed for 6", I have a 6" flue. Wood burns hotter above the fire if that makes sense but per pound is about half the btu output and much of the heat goes up the chimney. This thing is keeping the house warmer than our wood stove ever has...no comparison at all. I'm sold on it.
@totherarf
@totherarf 6 жыл бұрын
I realise yours is Coal only ;O) .... back before the 70's everyone had a coal fire (usually 2 ... sometimes one in each bedroom too) but then they decided that the fumes were killing everyone so we went smokeless in all the cities. That killed off Coal! That and Maggie Thatcher! We also had cheap electricity then too (5p a unit for years) and gas was plentiful and cheap too! We all used to have a back boiler in one fire too so unlimited hot water! But on a negative note we had windows that were draftier than yours ;O) Now I'm feeling old!

ANother nice video, I do have a concern though, clearances to a combustible wall, if the stove doesn't have the ul listing plate on the back then it needs to be kept a minimum 36" from any combustible surfaces (walls) you may be able to find an old manual online listing the clearances, wall shields may need to be built (these have a 1" air gap between the shield and wall, all the way around) The reason why I'm so adamant about the clearances is because these coal stoves burn at much higher temps, although you may not be able to see the heat transfer into the wall, its happening and slowly breaking down the wood / paper behind it, this is called pyrolysis, and it is effectively lowering the flash point of the combustible, so if wood normally ignites at 450deg f, pyrolysis break down can effectively make the flash point of wood / paper much lower then you can have a house fire. Please look into the stove clearances and build wall shields if needed, wall shields can safely reduce the clearance by 2/3 if built properly.
