About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on KZfaq videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

I have a cabin in Northern Minnesota. I heat with wood. My stove will hold 11 inch pieces of wood. I fill it before I go to bed, turn the dampers down. In the morning about 5 am , I wake because it is getting cool. I open the dampers, fill it up, close the dampers and go back to bed. It is 20 below zero. It's all about managing the damper and the right amount of wood. It takes practice.

Another key to heating the whole house is using a box fan to blow cold air from the far side of the house toward the room with the wood stove.... always blow cold air to stove instead of hot air from the stove area... works great... Great video guys

I have a US Stove 2000 from Tractor. I put the largest log possible and damper it down at bedtime. I have plenty of coals the next morning. In the morning, I open the damper, stoke it put I one big piece and several little pieces of wood. Before I leave for work, I damper it down again. In the evening, I get a hot fire to burn off any black ash on the window, etc. I light a fire once a week to empty the ashes.

My wood stove loads from top, which is nice. My cabin is 1200 sq feet. Have to learn to work with it through the seasons. Spring and fall you need a little warmth, winter, crank it up

I got that same stove at Lowes, and in May a few years ago for like $400. The store manager was just trying to get rid of it. I have a pellet stove and that same stove sits in my closet never been used. We have a really long house so heat doesn't move from one side to the other very well. I'm finally going to hook it up on the other side of the house this summer.

Hope that stove works out fore you. We had a big one in virginia and id put three pieces of wood at night and it kept everything barible, then early in the morning add two more pieces. Love wood stoves. Good luck with your stove, this winter will prove its effectiveness.

I use a top down burn. Big pieces on bottom then layer smaller pieces each step. Kindling on the very top and it will light and heat the flue faster. Embers fall onto the larger pieces and they all ignite.

Yes. We have the next size larger and we can put longer pieces in but even with the damper closed, I have to get up to feed in the middle of the night. 😒. However, we love the wood heat so much. We were thankful when the big snow storm took out our electricity for 24 hours. ❤️

We're going to be installing a wood stove in our home at some point and we'll be sure to get one that fits larger sized firewood. We intend on using the wood stove as our primary heat and having backup electric heat. We'll be harvesting our own fire wood and can make then any size we want, but it's still nice to have the larger stove with larger wood and not have to feed the fire as often, and also it should burn longer overnight. Thanks for sharing.

Use the blower on your electric furnace to move the air to all the rooms. Helps reduce the area around your woodstove being too hot and the back rooms being too cool. Turn the fan on at the thermostat and the heat off. Works like a whole bunch of box fans. . .in a way.

We have a pellet stove and find that it only heats the livingroom. In the winter, we just homeschool around the pellet stove. It was here when we moved in but I'm glad we didn't invest in purchasing it. Although, the atmosphere it produces is nice, we still have to run our oil radiator heat at night for the bedrooms in winter.

Wood stoves all have there own personalities, but the key to starting any fire is have plenty of air so when starting a new fire I leave the door cracked open to get enough air and if the air intake is from front top of glass put wood in north to south instead of east to west which allows air to flow between the wood and we load ours full at night and damper down so in morning there is still a bed of coals to get fire going again

I just watched a video about your pipes freezing. I can't find it now, but just wanted to say that insulating your pipes will help prevent them from freezing. Leave water dripping anytime temp is below freezing. Leave water running when in teens and single digits. Heat lamps under house would help as well. Google for more info.

Have y'all tried using the fan only on your furnace? Should be a "switch" on your thermostat that says FAN, ON or AUTO. In the on position it'll run the fan only and distribute that heat throughout the house thru your duct-work. Give it a bit to get used to but it works wonders. . . Honestly the fan on your furnace (not the woodstove fan) is a very small expense monthly vs. getting that heat moved around more evenly. If the fan is blowing too hard chances are u can slow it down. If u google "change blower speed on my furnace" or have a pro do it if you're not comfortable. Trying to help out. . . Been in the business for 32 years. (The furnace fan will run in the on position even if u have the heat set so low the furnace wont come on.)

Yeah. Think of it as a marriage. You have to keep the fire going to stay warm. You have to feed that fire like you have to feed a relationship. Sometimes you have to wake up in the middle of the night to feed it like when you have a baby. I miss having a wood stove, but soon we are hoping to have one again. The best thing in the world is wood heat.

An old fashion wood stove is more work and less efficient than modern gas operated furnaces (not an option for you I realize). But you'll never find the family coming together in front of one like you do with a wood stove. That alone makes the wood stove better & a great investment.

It's call stoking the fire, lots of work. My stove is bigger and still I have to stoke the fire not as much as you do. Mine will burn almost all night if you put a yule log on before you go to bed and turn the damper down so it will burn slow. You will have to burn THICKER pieces to do that, that might work better for you. Once you get your fire started for a while put in Thick pieces. Your stove is cute.

Hi Guys, apparently sizing the stove to the area to be heated is very important. 25 years ago I bought and installed a beautiful Vermont Castings wood stove for my house. My problem is similar because if I run the stove at a level where it will burn the wood efficiently it puts out way too much heat and makes the living room unbearably hot. If I bank it down it will work, but the level of creosote and ash goes way up. I've since removed the stove and she sits in the garage waiting for the day I find a house where I can use it!

Never place wood to where it can roll towards the door. If the back is north, always lay them north and south. Never east and west. Even if you have the cast log holders, it can burn down into smaller pieces that can roll out. Had a good family friend that got severe burns from this. He fell asleep in front of it and in the night one rolled against the door and the door wasn't latched right. It rolled out and onto him. Lumnah Acres has a good setup for flew cleaning. Keeping the fire going through the night is def a challenge. Especially if you are a heavy sleeper. I never could wake up to keep it fed. I always woke up and it would be freezing. (Pull head out of covers and blow steam)........lol.

A couple of thoughts..are you burning hardwoods? They will last longer and cause less creosote buildup than pine but are also more pricey. Dont forget to brush your flue of creosote periodically. Are you using kindling to start fires? You can also create fire starters by collecting dryer lint and placing it in used toilet paper rolls w some petroleum jelly to place beneath the kindling. The stove looks wider than deep. Why not get that tool that will grab the logs and place.them crossways instead of front to back. You may have to tuck one side behind the edge.then the other but it could work. Its actually beautiful, but take.great care in a mobile home for fires, they can go up so quickly. I lived in one for 17 years. No fireplace, though we did have a tornado strike.
