After the first test of our Subaru outback wilderness in the rocks of Joshua Tree National Park, it was time for us to take it up a notch and hook up the trailer for a day of off-roading and overlanding through Joshua Tree. As we started to make our descent into the canyon everything seemed to be straightforward. After about 5 miles is when things started to become stressful and the washboard road turned to 24" ledges. With the promise of making it to camp before dark starting to slip away, I knew we had to find a suitable spot to call home for the night. This trail would have been a breeze without the trailer, but the trailer changed everything!

Gotta say it's good to see you pushing the OB. Nobody else has or is taking their OB as hard as you 2 are. Good to see Courtney didn't bury you & the trailer in the 🏜️ desert YET. There are some amazing campgrounds in Joshua. Thanks for taking us along & showing how surprisingly amazing the OB is. Don't forget to check the oil.

Your wife is an excellent driver, and you are driving this car far more than what I am potentially going to use my OBW. I do feel that your shakedown trip with this vehicle carries with it a jeep centric view as a comparator, and that's ok as it help defines what this vehicle can and can't do. Every vehicle is it's own unique tool. For what you folks get into a lift kit and a rear diff locker may be just the ticket. I do love your content, and your understanding of how important it is to take weather and safety into your driving calculations.

She really is and she said thank you! We definitely put the OBW to the test, but we did that intentionally to really see what it can do and push it far beyond what other people probably will. I agree with the lift and locker idea and have put that on a list of possible modifications. Thanks again for the kind words and comment!

Beautiful drone footage, challenging Real time Learning lessons documented with your new OBW over landing set up. It wasn’t easy but much appreciated… you’ve gained admiration from your followers,(many OBWs owners or plans in future - my November ordered OBW Delivered last week). Your extensive Jeep experience offer the perfect platform to critique Subaru outback Wilderness… Congratulations to the three of you for surviving your first trip with the mostly unknown.

Toyo All Terrain III’s .. roof rack, etc. Been to Death Valley 3 times and Moab once .. so far it’s done everything my other rig has done. I did the Crosstrek as it’s just me and it’s about 500 lbs lighter and 15” shorter then the Outback. My son just put money down on a 2022 Wilderness! 🤠

Thanks for sharing your videos and the valuable information about your Outback Wilderness. About your trailer set up, does your teardrop have trailer brakes and are you using a 7 pin connection? I believe that's necessary in order to control brakes on a trailer. We have an Aeroteardrop trailer with trailer brakes and are strongly considering purchasing the Outback Wilderness in the coming weeks. Thanks

No problem at all, I’m glad they’ve been helpful! The car comes with a 4 pin, I had to add a 7 pin. I’m not even sure the dealer will install a 7 pin, but it’s worth the ask.

Great video, had my heart racing there in a couple spots! I've ordered the Wilderness and due to videos that ive seen, including your own, I'll be upgrading the tires to the specs on your vehicle, i wanted to confirm that you do not have a lift to ensure that I'm not rubbing. Also, if no full lift or spacer is necessary would you recommend leveling the front? thanks in advance!
@roamingwithjosh
@roamingwithjosh 2 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the OBW and that is for watching! We do not have a lift, but you will need new wheels with the proper offset to allow room for the larger tires. I don’t see the need to level out the front, but I would recommend some rear overload springs if you intend on loading it up and taking off with a bunch of gear.

I was wondering how well an Outback Wilderness would do pulling a tear drop. I have been pulling the trailer with my older Land Cruiser but considering the Wilderness as a replacement. Wasn’t sure if it was up to the job.
@roamingwithjosh
@roamingwithjosh 2 жыл бұрын
It does the job, but getting to more remote locations with the trailer is not an easy task. I think with rear overload springs and a torque locker you would be in much better shape.

Great video! Actually, a LOT of your videos are great! Just have a couple of questions: Was the Outback lifted at the time this video was made? I know you put a 2" AT suspension kit from Ironman, and was just wondering. It looks like you have the LP Adventure wheels with (I think) a +20 offset. Did that cause any issues with the fenders rubbing on the tires if the suspension wasn't in place?
@roamingwithjosh
@roamingwithjosh Жыл бұрын
Hey, morris! Appreciate the kind words! The outback was not lifted at the time of this video. I went with the +38 offset and had zero rubbing before lifting it.

Hey Josh, I love your videos and am considering buying an Outback Wilderness myself. I may have missed it, but do you have a Subaru stock hitch or an after market one? If an after market one, why did you go with that vs. the Subaru one?
@roamingwithjosh
@roamingwithjosh 2 жыл бұрын
we went with the factory subaru hitch and had the dealer install it. The factory hitch has been great, I would recommend getting a 7 pin harness installed that supports trailer brakes because the dealer installs a 4 pin that doesn't support trailer brakes.

Wirdeness in the Outback version of the turbo with CVT TR690 rides very badly, he will not be able to drive uphill, his reverse gear goes very badly because of the TR690. Forester Wildeness 2.5 with CVT580 drives uphill and reverse gear ratio is good as first gear!!!

My thoughts... First I think that you are going to need a lift with much stiffer springs... This would help prevent that rear end from squatting so much witch is certainly impacting departure and breakover, both of which are already a major limiting factor with the Outback Wilderness. This is also impacting traction on the front due to the amount of lift... lack of weight on the front end from the trailer. Second I think that you need a much lighter trailer... At 2,000 lbs you are within 1,500 lbs of the max towing ability of the Outback Wilderness. Even on pavement you are looking at an ideal max of around 2,800 lbs... off road I would put the max tow weight around 1,750 lbs or less and that is not taking into account cabin cargo weight. The Outback Wilderness just does not have the gearing, power, and traction to pull that kind of weight off road. Really the OBW is better suited for a roof top tent...
@roamingwithjosh
@roamingwithjosh 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with the springs and lift. I wanted to see what this thing could do before I put anything into it in terms of suspension and lift and honestly it does really well. The trailer is a bit heavy, but definitely manageable if you watch your step and travel with intention. Knowing the trail and keeping in mind it’s limitations make for a good day of overlanding. We have a couple rooftop tents at home, but I really wanted to see just how far we can push it and I think we’ve surpassed it’s limit. Thanks for the input and suggestions!
@FracturedNinja

@@roamingwithjosh I have recently been looking at tear drops, but weight has been a major factor for me. Recently I have been thinking about getting a lightweight trailer and than attaching a rooftop tent to it. I am not really too sure what I am going to do...lol.. May end up just sticking with my Gazelle tent for now.
@roamingwithjosh
@roamingwithjosh 2 жыл бұрын
We love our tents, but having an enclosed place for our daughter was a line in the sand my wife drew so we have had to make it work. As she gets older I can see us transitioning back to just our RTT.
@FracturedNinja
@FracturedNinja 2 жыл бұрын
@@roamingwithjosh yeah that is very understandable. My current struggle is that I have a 60lb Siberian Husky... So getting him in a roof top tent would be a significant challenge and while temperatures in the winter time are not an issue summer time will be a problem. So I am trying to figure out a solution that will allow both me and my dog to still be able to camp in the summer. Oh and I live in the South East.. so basically having access to AC is a most. A tear drop with AC would be the obvious choice, but given the cost I could just stay in hotels and cabins in the summer. Some have had success it appears using a portable AC unit in there tent... so I think that I am going to give that a try this summer. We will see..
