Nice upgrade! I went from a 16ft glass boat without a fish locker and bracket/pod to an 18ft pod/bracket and I will never (can never) go back. Having the outboard and kicker on its own bracket frees up so much space and the back of the boat (my pid is filled with foam and lifts the back up) makes the boat ride so much nicer.

That’s awesome Mike! The bracket is the way to go. We love the fishing space the same way you do. Thanks for watching 👍

Great job guys. Looks like we follow a similar motto, "if it's worth doing, do it right the first time'! Just a side note on wood core transoms and the issue of longevity in a marine environment. My boat is built by Sailfish in Georgia. There is no wood in the structural parts of the boat including the stringers and transom which are quad axial mat, epoxy, closed cell foam and kevlar . They even come with a 10 year warranty. Your boat is solid, so head off shore without a worry.

Thanks man! We looked into some different material like coosa board and decided to stick with the marine ply. We were very diligent in making sure the transom was completely sealed and all holes were completely sealed. That’s a badass build you have there. I can’t imagine the amount of hours you spent on that, it sure makes it worth it though!

My guess is the experience you had with your transom is pretty typical for older glass and wood boats. It happened to my first boat and to my last glass boat. The experience with my last glass and wood boat was what convinced to buy a plate aluminum boat.
@DDFishingCo
@DDFishingCo 7 ай бұрын
You are correct. Is very common for stringers and transoms to rot in older glass with wooden cores. A lot of people drill holes and don’t properly seal holes they drill in the bolts. We found several unsealed holes in the transom and stringers. Going aluminum will save you from those kinds of issues for sure. Most newer glass boats are built with composite material that will not rot.

Oh, you did a phenomenal job!!! And the results are speaking louder for themselves! Would you mind to help us with some questions? We bought last hear an already converted boat, but the motor slips constantly and it seems to suck the air from the surface. Now we're waiting for the saison end and looking for infos... So here the questions: Did you guys measure the height between ventilation plate and bottom point of the boat (what's the height?)? How far does the motor sit from transom or simplier, how long is your bracket? What were the rules to put the bracket on and does it touch the water, when you're riding (on plane and not)? Appreciate your time very much!!! TY!! And wish you to always find the best fish ;)

Thank you very much. We did our best and did a ton of research before starting the project. Boatworks Today was a great source of information along with Born Again Boating. Happy to answer your questions man, see below... So here the questions: Did you guys measure the height between ventilation plate and bottom point of the boat (what's the height?)? Yes, check out this video is very informational - from Born Again Boating. We also put a hydraulic Jack Plate to adjust our height as needed. You want the ventilation/cavitation plate lined up with the bottom of the boat and that will change depending on how far setback your motor is. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMV1gNtqvN24nI0.htmlfeature=shared How far does the motor sit from transom or simpler, how long is your bracket? Our motor sits a total 30 inches behind the boat with outboard bracket and the 8" hydraulic jack plate. You don't need a jack plate, we did one to be able to adjust the height. I know the total distance from the back of the boat needed to be 30inches. I cant remember the rule, however based on our horsepower, and total length of the boat, we needed 30 inches total. I think Born Again Boating has videos on this. Sorry I cant remember the exact ruling. What were the rules to put the bracket on and does it touch the water, when you're riding (on plane and not)? The bracket touches the water while floating at idle. The bracket has some flotation to it since its a sealed unit. When we are on plane the bracket is almost an extension of the bottom of the boat. Its not the same height as the bottom of the boat because its setback, and if it was the same height the boat wouldn't ride correct. The bracket would push the water much harder. It just brushes the water, similar to the trim tabs. There is a formula, to find the height of the bracket. Sorry I cant remember the exact ratios. It was this time last year when we did the project. If you send us an email I can send you some pictures of the bracket, shaping and how its mounted. Good luck with the project, hoping you can get the boat going again. Thanks!

Ok, ok, ok... Look, I'm one of your early subscribers. After seeing you with Chris, I was hooked with you guys. To be totally transparent, I watched this video 'completely' on 2x speed. However, I did watch the whole video. Cut me some slack, there was no blood on the deck.... That said it was extremely informative. Will I EVER do something like this, NO, but I am impressed by your persistents and drive to accomplish what most of us would not. I was in SF this past week with my family and I thought of you boys when I was walking across the GGB. I'm from Virginia. If EVER I'm there I'm gonna hire you boys to take me out if you are available. I'm a fisherman, so I don't expect results just a nice time overall on the water. If you ever are in the DC area and you want a tour of the White House let me know. I can hook you guys up. Cheers.

I know how much work you did, because I did the same to my boat. I got a Hourston Glasscraft 18 footer hard top fiberglass boat for free, literally stripped it clean , removed the old seized up 250 inboard, then sealed up the big motor hole in the transom, put an aluminum pod and swim grid on the back, and a very good old 115 Ocean pro Evinrude motor, all new wiring, harness, etc, etc, and it went 40 mph no problem. A foot wide 2 inch thick piece of Douglas Fir went inside the transom , a shelf, for batteries, and storage.

Thanks for the video. At the 11:55 mark you talk about being able to spray off the deck and have all the water "drain below". Is this into the bilge, and then pumped out, or do you have any scuppers for drainage? I'm about to do a rebuild and want to figure out the best way to handle water on the deck.
@DDFishingCo
@DDFishingCo 2 ай бұрын
The best way is to install scuppers. Keeps nasty water out of the bilge. However in this video and our project it all goes into the bilge. Based on everything on the back transom we didn't have ton of space for that.

@DDFishingCo
@DDFishingCo 7 ай бұрын
I don’t know the exact costs. The material, like the fiberglass resin, epoxy resin, wood, deck paint, brushes, misc, was probably around $3000. All the hydraulic lines, throttle cables, hoses, wiring, maybe another $1000. The Jack plate (not necessary) was $1800. The outboard bracket will vary based on how many motors, what sized boat.
