Outcast: A New Beginning reviewed by Dan Stapleton on PC. Also available on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
Thanks to its wildly customizable weapons and versatile Iron Man-like jetpack, Outcast: A New Beginning actually does feel like the start of an open-world adventure that’s different from pretty much everything else out there. It’s clearly not a big-budget game, but the freedom it gives you and its ability to laugh at itself make up for a lot of its weaknesses, such as character animations and some overly long questlines filled with busywork. Once you get to know the Talans and appreciate their goofy sci-fi babble, this becomes a charming and colorful world to spend a few dozen hours blasting robots in.

In the original Outcast game there is a sequence where you activate your equipment and it scans the environment. That animation blew my mind! Pretty low bar these days but still I a great memory!

it's too bad voxel tech never really took off beside being used for bump mapping and normal mapping. it's a pretty neat tech in the original game/

Thanks for the honest review! A fair bit of this seems appealing; the combat's moderately interesting, but lacking (many) interesting boss fights is a flaw in any game (imo). Plus, repetitive menial quests often leave me wondering 'Why bother?' The alien's culture seems quirky & unique... but the NPCs are fairly indistinguishable (maybe a bit better than 'Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora'). The map & gameplay seem like they've got potential for creating a better sequel once more players explain their POVs of the game's pros & cons

@@Deezter16 "Hunter" made by Activision for AMIGA which released in 1991 were the first open world game in 3D where you could do anything. First Open space 3D game were Elite from 1985. The prototype for GTA 3 were Body Harvest on Nintendo 64.

Thanks for putting a reviewer on this game who actually played the game in 1999 like me. It sadly looks like another ubisoft openworld and there is no sense of achievement cause it looks very easy to kill enemies and traverse the world.

Does anybody have the feeling this would be an excellent Guardians of the Galaxy game? We would get Star Lord as the main characters and a lot of different species, allies, and enemies to play around with. Then, we'd get special missions or story moments in which we would play as different characters.

The original was an overly ambitious game that stood out because of its use of voxels for its 3D engine. Voxels were an incredibly rare thing back then in gaming. Unfortunately because of its overambition it failed to be that fun so once the bad reviews came out almost everyone stayed away.
