So few tube amps are treated to full-out performance these days. Thanks for running these through their paces! I really like the 2nd version with the reverb - a throatier and more present sound for sure.

I like the non reverb version a little better in this comparison. Both are great amps! Love the distance recording to show off what an amp sounds like live!!

You can tell he worked super hard to show a small nuanced difference in the two amps, and the comments are split between which one they like more. gotta love the commitment to tone!

The version with reverb sounded tame compared to version 1, for good reason, reverb requires another 12ax7 in the preamp so takes away from the signal hitting the power tubes, as an amp tech one would think if I want this same sound from an amp with reverb I need to build in a better power transformer with more iron and more voltage to compensate for the loss, so the parts shelf just became more crowded.

Probably needed the bass a little lower and treble a little higher to tighten up and add aggression to the reverb version. I could rock with either one.

The old one is clearer and got the live mojo sound. The new one sounds muffled no mojo. Cool video.🤘

I owned the v1 version, and it wasn't that loud. It says it's 25 watts, but it sounded volume wise like a 15 watt tube amp. Same with Dual Tone, owned that as well, loud as 15 watts. Yes, I tried brand new power tubes and preamp tubes. Sold both amps.

Agree that the older version has more crunch clarity with mids scoped lower. The newer version has mid hump and s bit muddy sounding. May be able to dial in the tone on the newer version to better match both amps.

I'm always partial to reverb, so I like the reverb. Also, good point, I'm happy that I use my amps how they were intended to be used..as Amps lol.. Projecting sounds! I don't use mics at home, or even when I play out. I have my basic pedals, and settings and I'm good. I'm not that technical!

Your right they do sound different. They sound good. The original sounds slightly louder to me. Kinda liking the sound of the first one better.

You never know how good the amp is unless you play it loud. Supro amps are great, I have a blues king 10 (5 watt) because I could NEVER play that loud. Rock on TK!

Nice vid! It's a close call, but I like the non-reverb one more. Just a certain character to the crunch that I like a bit better than the reverb-equipped model.

Thanks for the video! You helped me save some cash in the long run when deciding, I think the V1 has more grit, plus if you need reverb, just use a pedal!

You are the first to describe the sound well here. That's how it sounded to me too. The first has a bit more stage, and the second a bit more attack in the highs. I do wonder how much better these amps would sound with NOS mullard tubes that were used for them in the sixties.

Did you know the v1 has a single Tone knob, and v2 has 2 knobs-treble and bass. If you roll off the base, and add a little trouble, you’ll have that brighter crunch sound.

Agreed, I think some people are confused as to which amp is V1 and V2. First amp played in the video is a V2, and to me has much more gain and mids. I like that amp (Black Magick Reverb) more.

I have to agree with you TK, I did like V1 better, you pointed out exactly what the Differences are between the amps, sound wise. Now you have the band stand, set up a drum kit add a bass and rhythm player, and give us a little bit of The Tone King Band!!!

You know that pros model looks good to me on and actual video but in and pictures it looks not so great. Those amps sound very close but im leaning toward version 1 as its seems a bit more mid heavy and smoother highs

Do they both have the same speaker? I know the later version comes with the BT 12 I believe the first version came with a Jenson P 12 queue. Can you confirm that they are different speakers?

I wonder how much of the sound difference is attributable to the difference in speakers in these 2 combos. The V2 (Reverb) has a BD12 speaker made by Eminence, with a 75W rating and a heavy ceramic magnet. It’s closest to a Celestion G12H30 in specs. The V1 (original non-master volume without reverb) has a Jensen P12Q speaker with a TINY alnico magnet and a 40W rating. I like V2 more, to ME listening on good equipment it has much more gain and mids, the opposite of what everyone else seems to hear. To be clear, the first amp heard in the video is the Reverb with a BD12, and then the 2nd round (back to back comparison) is V1 first. I have a V2 (Reverb, Master Volume) head and 1x12 cab, and own both speakers. I should do a shootout with same head swapping both speakers…. And yes, all of my gear came from Sweetwater too. 👍🏻 GREAT VIDEO, THANKS FOR MAKING IT. 🤘🏻

What speakers are in both amps? I know the v1 came with a Jensen were the v2 comes with a supro design speaker. Could this be the difference?

Tubes also have a huge influence on the sound. Actually, you should also exchange the tubes with each other. If you would use NOS Mullard tubes from the 60’s these amps would even sound better.

I really never thought much of supro amps.. I know people say good things but to me I assumed they were just old school surf or blues amps .. which is cool but not for me.. but then I heard this demo.. those puppies sound crusty af.. I could get down with one of those.. now all that said I think I liked the newer one better.. u throw in the fact it has reverb.. there's your winner 🏆😉👏

The v.1 sounds fatter and has more balz. I am not a spring reverb guy ...I prefer a digital plate sound from a pedal typical of all the classic recordings that use a Metal type sound.
