today we're summoning the Black Magick, courtesy of Supro Amps. This amp is loaded with vintage correct cosmetics and dimensions of a 1959 2x10 Coronado model but the baffle has been swapped out for a 1x12 just like the amplifier that Jimmy Page loaned to the rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame. The Black Magick features a 25-watt, 6973-equipped Class A power amp and two channels wired in parallel, each with independent volume controls. Using channel 1 automatically links both 1 and 2 for a higher-gain tone than with just a single channel, allowing for some more intense breakup and tube compression at higher volume settings. In typical Supro fashion, the Black Magick features a footswitchable output tube tremolo for some warm, mojo-laden wobble. The 6973 tube selection was chosen by Supro specifically for its midrange grind and exceptional touch dynamics. This arrangement allows players to change the character of the amp simply by adjusting the guitar's volume knob, regardless of pickup type. The Black Magick stands out from its peers thanks to its striking Black Rhino Tolex and gold faceplace. Like all Supro Amps, this Magickal creation is meticulously built with the finest quality parts in the USA.

Me too. Killer amp in just about every respect. Did you see the new extension cabs for the Black Magick on the Supro site? There is a matching 12" and a 15" coming any day now. Probably going to grab the 15" depending on price myself. :)

Got to spend about an hour and a half putting one of these through the paces at GC in Atlanta fairly early in the day (nobody was there hardly). I have to say, this amp really does have some "magic" in it. My favorite, by far of the current Supro line, and that's saying a lot, considering the great amps they're putting out.

Great as always Andy, but would have liked to hear you use the Tele more, especially as it seems quite a dark amp overall
@Ramen4Days
@Ramen4Days 8 жыл бұрын
+M Carter I wouldn't call it dark, but the tone control is weird. It doesn't take away any bass until it's at around 3 o'clock on the dial. It adds treble, but it only removes bass in the last fifth of the knob or so. It's definitely different.

@Beizeiten78

I played one of these at Sweetwater today. It's not very loud, even with both channels cranked. I also, with a Les Paul in bridge position, I found it rather dark. Great tone, but not loud enough to even practice with; drums would smoother this thing. I've played 15 watt amps that kill this thing. And if you roll off your guitar's volume to clean it up, you can practically carry on a conversation over it. It needs way more volume and a hint of presence and punch in the mids. Could just be a really inefficient speaker, but I would not consider buying one.
@Beizeiten78
@Beizeiten78 8 жыл бұрын
Played it again today, I gotta say, though not terribly loud, I'm just super impressed. I may indeed purchase one. Not exactly a sound-like-Page amp, but great in its own right. Also, having a lot of time on it today, the volume is more than suitable.
@Beizeiten78
@Beizeiten78 8 жыл бұрын
Also, funny enough, the feedback when running full bore is probably the best, sweetest sounding feedback I've ever heard. No shit, I could sit there and just listen to it. I should mention, even both channels dimmed, it's super quiet in the noise floor department.
@blooeagle5118
@blooeagle5118 7 жыл бұрын
honestly, I think it's more for recording and such, not really for playing live. but in this respect, it's a fantastic amp. I have a Tone Bender MKII pro (the same pedal Page used for the majority of Zeppelin's material) and putting a telecaster through that pedal into this supro sounded literally IDENTICAL to the material found in Led Zeppelin I and II. awesome amp, I'm saving for one :)

I bought one of these back in February of 2019. Ive played in a band situation and can't turn it up just 9 without getting complaints that it's too loud. I was hesitant to buy it because of comments like this that it wasn't loud enough. Totally wrong. This thing screams.
@beef88
@beef88 2 жыл бұрын
The neighbours would disagree😂 I have one and hear what you’re saying though. I love it and yet sometimes I wish it was louder but sometimes I wish it was less loud. I found the same thing with the LP. For what I’m hearing in my Supros - the best marriages are the LP through a cranked Coronado and a Tele or Rickenbacker through my Black Magick.

I played one with a Les Paul cranked, and it's not loud at all. Loved the tone, but it's way too quiet for me. When you backup the guitar to clean it up, it's loud enough you can easily have a conversation over it. No joke.

I've heard it in person, and it's awesome. This is pretty accurate. However, if I'm honest, the stock Coronado II with the 2x10s somehow sounds closer to Zep I and much of II. I know it's the wrong speaker compliment, etc. but that's just to my ears.

The Black Magick has the most gain if that factors in? The Coronado sounds righteous cranked as well though and all of the Supro's take pedals incredibly well so I'm not sure you could go wrong with any of those. I went with the Black Magick myself but it was a tough choice.

Ahhh, the NEW Supro's, they sound good don't they! However, will they last? But wait, Valco Co. in Chicago, IL made Supro, Harmony, Airline, and other great completely point to point, hand-wired amps from the 50's & 1960's. The new Supro amps are NOT Valco. Inside the new Supro's, you will find that the entire electrical grid is soldered on circuit boards. Even the Tube Sockets are NOT mounted on a metal chassis, and instead are the pin-mount Sockets directly on the circuit board just like a Chinese made $300 amp. The Black Magick sounds good, however would not spend my $1,500 of hard earned cash for this PC type of build. Ever pull or push a stubborn tube from a circuit-board mounted socket & hear a CRACK sound!? That's the sound of your circuit board cracking, and your entire investment gone. Don't believe me, ask you favorite amp technician, and you decide. Fact is that an original vintage 1960's point to point hand wired VALCO-Supro amp will last another 50-200 years (with simple maintenance), and be worth your investment plus. Jimmy Page played on a VALCO Supro 1624t, that was Point to point hand-wired in Chicago, IL.

Who pays retail these days? I scored a Black Magick for a bit over $1300 and it's worth every penny. Tons of character, looks fantastic, simple, takes just about any pedal or guitar, and makes me smile every time I fire it up. But like all things this is subjective. Best to you, man.

Most amp techs are biased against pcbs. I can't give a ruling on what is superior, but I can let everybody know that when people make claims that printed circuit boards are synonymous with poor quality...that is flat out wrong. The only thing associated with low value, low quality...is a poor design and low quality parts. Many PCB's are poor quality...and that is because its either a poor design or it cut to many corners to save on cost. Likewise, there are many poor point to point wired amps plaugued with problems due to poor components or a bad design. I've currently got about 10 guitar amps ...both PCB and PTP wired. I'm not biased either way. I've got a few vintage Fenders, Marshalls, Mesa boogie's. The vintage amps need babying to stay road worthy. My two amps I can count on to be reliable for gigs is a Dr Z Maz 18 and a Mesa Mark V. The Mesa is using a PCB. Also, Mesa has gone way out of their way to support my original Mark I ...the one before it was even named Mark I. Its from the Mid - Late 70s. I am not even the original owner. I'm sure if in normal use and a tube socket / pcb broke upon a tube change...they would help and it would not be a total loss.
