Outer Banks Shelling in North Carolina!

Today we'll be doing something totally different. Usually, I am out on the beaches of Southwest Florida looking for shells, but today that is all about to change!
I've been meaning to take a trip to the outer banks for over two years now. This winter we finally got our thing together and were able to make it there.
We will be visiting two bucket list beaches today: Coquina Beach, and Frisco Beach. Coquina beach is an east facing beach south of Nags Head and north of Hatteras Island in the outer banks. Frisco Beach is located along the south facing shores of Hatteras Island south of Coquina beach. Let's see what we can find!

Finally!!!! Somebody that keeps the beautiful broken shells!!! I love broken welks, conchs, moon snails, and wampum pieces. So many people leave those beautiful spiral cross sections or broken tops of shells behind. They make for amazing craft pieces too.

Omg I’ve never found a mermaid purse, so awesome. Looks beautiful there. Can’t wait to see more. 🤗🐚🐚🐚🐚

That was wild with the skate egg casings1 And the scallop colors were so pretty. I have only found 1 cross hatched lucine - I can't believe you found 2 in one day! It's so interesting to see the different species of shells on an East Coast beach. And congrats on the scotch bonnet. I'm always super excited when I get to see those too!

Love the OBX for shelling too! The best luck we have shelling there is if you are able to get a buggy license/permit to drive a 4 wheel drive truck/ suv on the beach. We drive as far as we can in Frisco and then head down to the beaches in Hatteras village. Drive along slow and jump out when you find a shell pile or an interesting wrack line. Love your sky pics too.

I'm watching your OBX videos backwards, but this was a great start to the trip and I'm confident you'll have a nice time in the Outer Banks! We love finding the whelk egg casings and have a glass jar where we collect the little baby whelks. Congrats on that Scotch Bonnet, too! It's always exciting to find an intact shell! How far south can you find them along the East Coast?

I went to Frisco in October, and in the water I found a beautiful big blue knobby whelk!!!!

Ah well, it's always a good day at the beach even if the shells aren't abundant. Love the mermaid purses!

I have walked those beaches for 30+ years, it was wonderful to see your experience. I agree with your Rock Snail the other small piece is indeed a mystery. We were there at the end of October and I could not believe the lack of shells. I walk from 45 to 49 or 45 to 44. P.S. 45 has a parking lot 😉
