Have any of you ever wondered how many people Guthrie has helped without even charging a penny? I hope everyone who watches these free you tube offerings realizes the generosity. Guthrie has an extremely busy life, yet it is still important to him to provide these free lessons. We all owe him a ton of gratitude. Thank you, Guthrie and God bless you!

Great lesson Guthrie. That is probably one of the best lessons I have seen on this topic. One of the things that is not emphasised enough with guitar playing by instructors is the whole concept of visualisation. As you said, it only comes with doing the hard yards of practice and repetition and eventually the penny will drop and it all falls into place. I am sure your channel will grow very quickly once people see the clarity of your explanations and the quality of your tuition. Your melodic lines are like a breathe of fresh air. Looking forward to the next lesson. Keep em coming !

The two lessons you did with Brett papa "Mastering the fretboard" and "soloing over chord changes" along with the above video are the best on You tube. I have learned so much. I just finished learning two of the five solos on mastering the fretboard. 3 more to go. This lesson really compliments the two lessons with Brett. Congrats on the success of those lessons. So when did pants with air vents come out. lol

Hey Guthrie I did not realize you were playing with Steve Conn. He is used to live across the river from me years ago. He and Sonny play here every year the day after Thanksgiving. He can tear the keys up and the accordion too, real good vocals and writes some great songs. What a small world. Holler back if you get this message.

RIGHT HERE, these are the keys to the kingdom. I live near New Orleans and there are so many great guitarists, and one in particular I saw play, his name is John Fohl, check him out... He plays a very musical style, where every note he plays sounds like the right note... I hit him up for a couple lessons and he does a similar thing but this is spelled out maybe a bit better, he plays through the chords and all its inversions when soloing. It doesn't sound like just riffing out licks (which I enjoy sometimes) but this is next-level stuff that seems like the "old timers" used to do more of, but it's just a way more musical way. I'm subscribing! Between you, Brett Papa and Tim Pierce, Corey Congilio, you are bringing great material for us somewhat-experienced weekend warriors to take us to the next level, and I thank you for it.

So today I decided to focus on playing out of the chords, but trying to stay in one area. I remembered you did this progression and figured it would be a good one to use. At 11:00 in you take the triads and do that very thing! When this video was released it was way beyond me, I didn't understand what was happening. Now, again, it's the perfect lesson. Thanks Guthrie. I have been playing for so many years (like 35 or so) and all along I have been doing just what you are teaching without realizing it. I just thought it sounded cool. I had no idea that it was a proper thing to do. I've got a lot of holes in my playing because I do not know the names of the notes or the theory behind what I am playing. I try to play things in as many different places as possible, and then try to re-learn the same things without moving around so much. You have really boosted my confidence and inspired me to move forward and I sincerely thank you for that. I'm putting the pieces together slowly and it's so much fun. I wish I had access to this years ago but we never had KZfaq back then. Next time you're in Canada, I'll buy you a beer eh!

DUDE, incredible as always. It blows my mind that someone as talented as yourself is available for private instruction. I don't even feel worthy to receive a personal lesson - but I'd love to get one someday. I understand exactly what you are trying to get us to see - it's just the journey there that's a little cloudy. I'll admit - I've never seen the need for practicing arpeggios - or how they are useful - but I get it now. You need to know where those notes are so you can tag them in passing. I feel like I should check out your online lessons first assuming you cover this same stuff - but this type of thing is EXACTLY what I've been trying figure out how to do for years. I'm so happy to have someone who can explain it. Beautiful playing as always - keep it up.

I have an ArtistWorks account only for Guthrie's videos and he has a few videos in the intermediate level that's incredibly similar to this one (same chord progression and all). I've watched the AW video at least a dozen times- no exaggeration and just spent about an hour pausing, rewinding, and continuing through this video and lemme tell ya, I'm still learning new stuff from basically the same lesson. I'm not getting paid by AW in anyway but man... if y'all never spent money on lessons or you're hesitant about online lessons, Guthrie's lessons are worth signing up for. Also, one piece of advice for students who struggle visualizing the fretboard (Guthrie mentions this in every lesson that I can think of) PRACTICE IN FRONT OF A MIRROR. It's a game changer. Looking at charts/tabs and the view you get of the fretboard based on how your looking down at your guitar gets stale. By watching yourself in the mirror practice scales, CAGED chord shapes, and arpeggios, you get a totally different perspective that will help you develop as a guitarist.

Man, for now I just want to say THANK YOU. I’ve been watching your videos for the last days and I definitely had what I can only define as some kind of musical enlightenment, haha. I’ll definitely get back to you, probably by email, just to thank you and explain how amazingly insightful e helpful your explanations have been.I already knew (at least I thought so...) what CAGED, arpeggios and scales were, but something clicked during the first time I watched one of your videos. Hard to explain how or even why exactly it happened just now, after years playing the guitar. But man, I feel I finally have answers, and A PATH to follow. Just crazy. It feels somewhat simple (simpler?) now to understand the why’s and how’s music works on the guitar neck. Haha. The last days have been super fun and studying now seems to have a very clear purpose and focus. I wish I had understood (or maybe found your videos) earlier. You’ll hear from me again! Thanks, Guthrie!

On some level (Maybe?) it's nice to know that we're playing a Phrygian #4 with a flat 13 scale, but for sure, knowing what notes sound good over THIS chord, in THIS context, in THIS song is so refreshing. The simplest way to look at this, the G#7 is a secondary dominant chord in E, it’s the V of VI, so simply using the C-sharp harmonic minor scale, the G#7 chord is resolving to C#-. The scale is called G# Phrygian Dominant, the scale is G# A C C# D# E F# G#, it perfectly outlines the sound of the dominant moving to Minor

Yeah I m looking real close because something happens when you emphasize a half step connection to the new chord, for instance G#7 C note the 3rd,,,TO C#min when you played G#7 on the 8th fret slide up a half to C# on the 9th with the little 6th shape BAM!* BONUS POINTS* ecspl in the upper register very cool,,your brains gotta be workin right to play this thing, Your Genius Thanks Man!

Thanks GT! I know what I’ll be doing later tonight ... slowly taking it layer by layer. Also, I’m sure selectively weaving minor pentatonic licks into a solo that follows chord tones like this one sweetens it all up.

I would keep having fun as much as possible. Just add some fundamentals in as much as you can stand. You still have to enjoy playing the guitar and it shouldn’t be like work.

I have found that connecting major and minor 3rds in octaves helps you move up and down the frett board melodicly. Helps me come up with different ideas.

I'm having a tough time understanding the concept of why you're using certain shapes, and how do I apply this to my solos? Are you changing modes? Keys? I understand to follow the chord shapes, but seems there are notes not normally part of the scale... Are you changing modes? Or just including the arpeggio notes as part of the lead playing?

Such a valuable concept and lesson. Helps with chord shapes, arpeggio/scale patterns, ear training, and fretboard mapping, but does it in a way that connects these ideas to create music. Many thanks for sharing your expertise! I'd say you've earned yourself a fresh set of trousers 8)
