@@PumpUptheJam81 What's sad is the CCS consortium has been discussing (and I assume refining the protocol for) ISO 15118 (CCS3?.... Plug and charge) since 2010, that'll (probably) be about the same time Tesla started on the Superchargers. The "Start-up" devised a system, built the prototypes and built an impressive network within 8 years.

@Jonathan Loeppky Battery cells have a minimum voltage, below which they can be permanently damaged. When an electric car is at an indicated 0% charge, the cells are all still above that minimum threshold. Damage is only done if you drive till 0% and then leave it unparked for a long time (days at least but it varies) without plugging it back in, such that it drains to below the minimum voltage level. Leaving an EV parked and plugged in at 1%, 0%, 20%, 10%, is all fine. In fact those low states of charge is where degradation happens the slowest. Manufacturers advise against going below 20% only to avoid accidental bricking of battery packs should you do something unusual like drive down to 5% then leave on vacation for 3 months without plugging the car in, and ruining it.

The keys to a successful transition to EV's for everyone - beyond the price of the car: 1) Frequency of charging stations, 2) Charging speed, 3) Ease of use, and 4) Charging quality - meaning that it should be easy to connect to the charging station and that it should work properly. That last point seems to be an issue more often than it should be.

Without looking at the final side by side data, my first impression overall is that a 1.5 hour gap between Kyle, the fanatical optimizer, in a high priced Porsche, and the last place Model 3 with a pregnant woman, a dog, and some pretty a-typical charging experiences, means that I would probably choose whichever EV I buy based on other factors than range and charging speeds. The X (and 3) drivers had no idea what they were doing (vs Kyle who knew everything). The Tesla Map shows the charging speed for all stations -- not utilized even once during the trip. Little or no reason to stop at 150KW stations. Also, to match Kyle's planning -- the X / 3 should have hand-picked each station instead of just going when the car suggested. Kyle would have won in the X, 3, Ionic or Tycan (maybe even the Mach E). Video highlighted a few to me: 1) driver matters; 2) non-Tesla charging stations are still difficult (bad screens, connection problem, slow to start, sometimes broken, have to worry about them being in use b/c there's only a few at each stop). 3) All cars did well on this route and capable of a road trip... and this will get better as more chargers roll out. I just hope all chargers get to the point where they're as easy as Tesla superchargers (plug-in... no screen to read, no buttons to push, no phone / app, etc.).

The nice thing about a gas vehicle is you just fill it to full and not have to sit there and do the math of how far to next charging station to how much range you need. That trip I maybe would have had to stop twice for gas but may have just been once. Never done that route so not sure how the climbs would affect my range. I will stick with gas engine for trips like this.

Absolutely. If you have kids, charging speeds are not a concern at all. Up until the beginning of the pandemic, we were road tripping from the Bay Area to Disneyland about 6 times a year since getting our early 2013 Model S. It charges at 90kW max and we never had to wait for the car to charge. And there were far fewer chargers a decade ago. Sometimes our stops would be 1.5 to 2 hours long because the baby was fussy and refused to get back into the car seat. Sometimes, we would have to pull over to the side of the road for an hour because a kid threw up and another was hungry. Charging the car added zero time to the trip.

I'm guessing most EV drivers keep SOC between 20%-80%, not 5%-55% like Kyle did in this race. Taycan's charging peaks at 250kw between 5%-25% (vs Ioniq 5's 235kw 10%-45%) It's also fairly apparent that Kyle has driven in this particular route and was familiar with charging situation at various charging stations while others weren't. I feel that this race was somewhat pointless in that it tested Kyle's knowledge of this particular route and Taycan, not the charging speed/battery range of all EV's in the race.

I totally agree. And with more and more charging locations they have more and more options that can match any style. So like to drive as far as possible then do a stop, others like me like more frequent but shorter stops. My normal trips I like to stop about every 150-200 miles for about 15 minutes.

@@techyjames1945 Back when I had my first EV - Nissan Leaf 24kWh - I did a few longer trips that inevitably required quite a few charging stops. This seemed tedious on one hand with such a short-range car (100-140km) but I found that at the destination, I felt a lot more rested and my body wasn't as stiff had I gone in single leg. Say what you will but we should embrace stopping, taking a short walk much more often and stop focusing on the destination so much.

Interestingly for us in the UK and the rest of Europe our Tesla models have to use the CCS port as standard (for all manufacturers now). So we get the best of both worlds - Tesla superchargers or the option to use any public CCS.

At the Supercharger you can get 250kw. At an Ionity charger which is Europe‘s Electrify America you can get 180-190 max with a Tesla and also at other Fast Charging Stations. The ionity Stations also have 350kw max but this is only achievable with an 800v based car like the Taycan.

This has been an entertaining couple of videos. I do hope that in the upcoming summary video you will give the efficiency numbers and the cost for each vehicle to make the drive. Many of the people that are switching from ICE to EVs are driven to do so in response to the high cost of gasoline and these figures are just as important to them as how fast can they get from point A to point B.

One thing I’ve noticed about the Ioniq5 is that it is much less picky about state of charge. It charges at nearly the same speed from 0% to 80%. I guess the Taycan is fairly similar, but the Teslas and the Mach-E charge a lot slower after 50%. The benefit of this is not only do you charge faster to 80%, but there is less incentive to pull in a near 0%. If I had known that you all were doing this trip, I’d have come along in my 2022 Bolt EUV for comedic effect and to show the difference between a modern EV and one with 6yr old tech. It would have made the trip but probably arrived hours after the rest.
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl Жыл бұрын
According to ABRP, the difference would have been about 2-3 hours, not 5-10 hours. The Bolt gets better efficiency than most of the cars in this race, which partially compensates for its slower charging speeds. But, if the 6 year-old tech means buying a $22k used vehicle, rather than a $50-150k new vehicle, the Bolt driver still gets the last laugh. If the Bolt driver really wants to spend money to save time, they can just fly on an airplane.

Mach E charges at decent speeds up until the point that it doesn’t and jumps down to L2 speeds. While the PS2 has a more linear charge curve that starts falling off in the low 40’s and takes a nosedive at 80 and 90%. It really would have had to be a FWD with heat pump to have a fighting chance.

Common throughout both videos “Please charge” Please connect” ohh only 1 350 charger. What no V3 supercharger “ car won’t sync” this one working this one’s not. App says it works but it’s not. Use the app over the station on and on all of that makes me happy I ordered the Model X. I'm going to start out by saying I watched both parts of this video and enjoyed it. EA could learn a lot from this video if they really care about improving their business. It seem to me that the Tesla charging network was a much smoother experience and easy to use. The reason ICE vehicles still have wide appeal is because you can pull into a gas station (and they are everywhere) and charge your vehicle in about 5 to 10 minutes, to a range of 300 to 500 miles and be on your way. ICE vehicles would win that race every time and it wouldn't even be close. 5 to 6 dollar gas is the only way electric vehicles get on an even playing field. 2 dollar gas makes electric vehicles a hard sell. Having to spend a minimum of $30,000 to get an electric car is a hard pill to swallow. I can buy a lot of gas for $30,000.
@AndrewDomman
@AndrewDomman Жыл бұрын
You pay about 5-15k premium (if you count the EV tax credits) for a BEV over the same gas model. You'll typically make up the cost difference in around 5 years with fuel savings. 800v/300Watt charging is the main way forward for BEV. charging is barely longer than a gas fill up.
@robocowone464
@robocowone464 Жыл бұрын
@@AndrewDomman Every point made in your statement is totally false. The premium you mention is close, but the rest of what said is a big NO!!! I can buy at least ten years worth of gasoline for the price difference so even if I got all my electricity for free I couldn't make up the difference in ten years, much less three.
@UnseenSpirit
@UnseenSpirit Жыл бұрын
It's one reason why I won't jump onto a BEV yet. I have a 2009 Prius which gives me 550 miles in winter and 600 miles a tank in the summer. I do a 78 mile commute to work and back so anything under 300 miles would mean I'd need to quite regularly charge up. It takes me 3 minutes to fill up on petrol as we call it here in the UK . I may or may not hit 80-90 mph regularly on my commute but speed limits do change from 30 to 50 to 70 to 50 and then 40/30 until I'm home.
