I drive Lyft with my Model Y in a wine region. I tell riders ALL the time that Range is ONLY important on road trips. I also tell them that MOST people overestimate their Daily driving needs. If you have more than one vehicle, you can already substitute an EV for one of those vehicles. I even had a DoorDash driver in the car and told him he could get a small range EV, a Leaf or 500e, and drive all day, never having to lose money on gasoline.

It's a real peoples car in the EV area for now. It's very nice to drive - the software is now much better, especially version 4 is all what you need. I mean over here in Europe we have a functional CCS network, less in the US. Here you see so many ID4´s around that it's too much already (Peoples car).

Here in the Northeast and many other parts of the country many of us spend more time on 55-mph 2-lane roads with lots of turns and rolling hills. How about some analysis or comparison of range in these conditions? Your tests and analyses are great, but I rarely drive in your high speed environment. 192 miles? Very respectable. People complain that's too low, but highway safety guidance has said for years you're should road trip in intervals of 2 hours with 15+ minute rest stops in between. 2 hours at 80 mph is only 160 miles. So the range is absolutely fine. The real question: can you charge what you need in 15 minutes at the rest stop? That's the real bottle neck
@bmw803

I'm in Buffalo area, which means very cold winters. 39K for a car that will give me 125-140 miles in cold? If chargers were reliable, then it would be OK. Better get the BOLT EUV for 10K less. Base Equinox will be at 30K with 250 miles. Way over priced, but a beautiful design.
@kodekabuki
@kodekabuki Жыл бұрын
Charger isn’t magically going to be available exactly at the place where you need it. And you can’t charge the car to 100% regularly. Then discount range some more for cold weather. Discount some more for eventual battery pack degradation after 2-3 years. Once you do all of this, you will quickly realize you need the larger battery pack if you want to road trip the car (if all you want to do is commute to work, then smaller pack is just fine).
@Necrotron
@Necrotron Жыл бұрын
@@kodekabuki 1) that's a charging problem, not a range problem. 2) don't need to charge to 100%. I never have. 3) cold weather range drop is usually pretty exaggerated. The range killer is towing. 4) same with degradation: mostly exaggerated unless you're a Leaf owner. This very channel has a video on degradation at 100K miles in a Model 3 showing how little range has been lost. 5) if I can road trip in a Bolt on the original battery pack (which has the worst charging performance next to the AWD bz4X) the small pack ID.4 can fair just fine. Definitely not limited to commuting.
@NF-rl9xh
@NF-rl9xh Жыл бұрын
Except it only goes 60 miles on a 15 min charge so you would be stopping every hour for 15 min or every two hours for a half hour. Not saying it’s a bad car but it’s not compelling for road tripping yet. It can be done but there are much better alternatives.

Sorry a bit off topic, on a recent road trip with my Model 3, I stopped in Co Springs SC at a downtown parking garage. It is a paid parking lot with monthly and take a ticket options. Unfortunately, the ticket dispenser wasn't working. I tried the help number but they couldn't help. So three Teslas had to back out. I headed north to a SC (denver, I think) that was 11 miles away which was backtracking. Fortunately I had enough juice to get there. Co Springs is a bad location in my view in many ways.

I end up having to fast forward a lot because there is so much repetition between different videos on the same car, even within the same video. I’d like to see ID4 getting better efficiency. The small battery, RWD car should be getting at least 10% better efficiency than this. This test was basically ideal driving conditions and still only managed 3.3mi/kWh on the freeway portion. Not sure what ID4, small battery, model you were driving, at one point you said it was the entry or standard model and another you said Pro S, which does not have the small battery; the S has the small battery. Since all ID4s are now purchased from dealer inventory, it is possible to know what brand battery is in which car because it is printed on the window sticker. And if you are concerned about the number of ID4 variations available, you'll really get a headache in choosing a Nissan Ariya. By the way, I'm very happy with my ID4 Pro S that I got a couple of months ago and it is Pearl White.

Battery damage gets worse the lower the state of charge gets and the longer you let the battery be in that state. Letting the car sit at indicated 0% for any longer that necessary is therefore a bad idea, but it would be even worse at true 0% (without buffer). So the buffer keeps the battery somewhat alive if people do the most stupid thing, while the red alert tells people what they SHOULD do.

He said at one point the usable capacity is 57 kwh in that one. That would be 3.368 so guessing that is how the 3.4 number was calculated.
@brandti1367
@brandti1367 Жыл бұрын
1) Gross capacity is 62 kWh. Net capacity (theoretically usable) is around 58 kWh. Because of losses within the battery (e.g. due to relativly high currents while driving), only a little bit less is actually usable (let's say 57 kWh). And there you have it: 3.37 mi/kWh. 2) Additionally (although it's a smaller difference), the car jumped to 192 already at 19:00 and Kyle drove well over another minute with quite some speed after that. So it's maybe even closer to 193 mi 3) The car only showed the red alert after Kyle went into P. As far as I know our MEB car, this only means that you should NOT let the battery sit at 0% for longer that absolutely necessary and charge NOW. The blue "available power" bar visible at 20:25 still showed a decent amount of power left. So the battery was not completely empty, but from the information we have, we can only speculate how much energy was still in there.

@@4literv6 thank you for the question. Let's use the example that you did in a Ford Fiesta. If it would really cost 24k today it too would be grossly overpriced. However what would you pay for Fiesta gas model if it only went around 190 miles on a tank of gas, summertime, about half that wintertime, and took over an hour to fill it up with gas? For me that ID-4 is only worth around 12k because of short range and long charge time.

@@JohnSmith-ug5ci are you not a homeowner or have an off st driveway to park it on, with working reliable electricity then? 80-85% of new car buyers in the U.S. are homeowners with six figure household incomes. And 83% of all car's sold in 2022 we're financed. So logic says with over 2/3rds of us citizens living in a single family home. Somewhere to park an ev, with reliable electricity service to re charge it is the current reality. Until we hit at least 80% adoption anyway, which will likely occur around 2030 or sooner. 🤔 Counter point to your mis informed claim about charging time is. An ev takes mere seconds to plug in at home, work, the mall etc and you go about your business while it charges up. Our bolt charges up overnight on only emissions free electricity from wind,hydro or nuclear. 400kwhs free monthly is good enough for 1,200-1,600 free miles a month. 😎 It actually has longer range per charge in mixed or in town use driving than the fiesta. Less on the hwy though to your point by about 50 miles. Pre warming it keeps winter range to about what the fiesta loses when cold. So within 10-15% or so of the warm weather driving range. No oil changes, no tune ups, no emissions, no engine air filters used. Brake pads look brand new and tires are good after 20k and 3 rotations. Cost less than the fiesta to buy as well pre car buying madness and ev adoption accelerating. Plus a replaced pack to. 🤔

It seems like a very nice car, but why would you spend $45,000 on it when you can get a RWD Model Y for $47,000 with an EPA range of 279 miles and full access to the superb Tesla Supercharging infrastructure?

@@joeyyung911 Let's see. 1,300,000 sales last year, and there will be nearly 2,000,000 sales this year for Tesla. And Tesla is making nearly a $10,000 profit per car. No other car company is making a profit on their EVs except BYD. Mary Berra just said GM won't be making a profit on their EVs until the end of the decade. Yikes! Seems your comment is a bit irrational....... I love my Model Y. Best car I ever had.

@@joeyyung911 Of course not, but for an extra 2K, you rely and a RELIABLE and "fuck around" free charging network. You plug the car and walk. ID.4 is definitely a better quality vehicle, but over priced.

@@777Outrigger You're spot on, but remember, Tesla got into this business somewhere in 2008. GM was working on the VOLT, which they did a phenomenal job. Outside Tesla, GM's bolt is probably the simplest and most trouble free vehicle. LG fucked up batteries, otherwise they barely had any major issues with it.
