I'm 63 3/4 yrs old, working with wood since teenage years, and one look made me want to drive from S. Oklahoma to buy that wood. It is outstanding, possibly a once-in-a-lifetime log. It's worthy of a good finish and displayed as is. I'd consider it above some fine artwork.

That one is a beauty! So silly that this is the fantastic stuff skipped by many because it's not a "veneer" log. I used to drag all the walnut from my friends tree service to the mill. At the time he didn't even use it as firewood. Got many beautiful slabs that way.

Unfortunately all the majestic 300-400+ year old black walnut trees in the surrounding towns around me here in Massachusetts died from disease and had to be taken down 40 years ago, so it's very rare now to see old growth black walnut around here anymore. It came with a beautiful stock with a bit of crotch figure. That was a good 5 years ago, and I still have not sent it to have the stock replaced. You just can't put any'ol stock on this gun, and I've been hoping to run into just the right piece of wood. Take care.

@@Pest789 Correct. I have a couple of high velocity paper punches from the 1940's. One was made by a typewriter company called Remington. It had a walnut stock and peepers (Redfield) installed sometime in the mid 1950's. Perfectly round holes appear in the paper exactly where it is pointed. The other was imported from Russia, spits fire and makes my shoulder hurt after making 15 to 20 randomly placed holes in some paper.

@@michiel1362 I am just describing the process, but when surface is finally ready, it is Watco Danish oil plain (no color), sometimes with several coats, wet sanded with 600 grit sanding sponges, or spray lacquer coat of base, and then finish with satin lacquer. I have two book matched spalted maple slabs on my shop wall that I’m not sure I’ll ever use. Only sanded but they are perfect just how they are 😊

Every line in those tree trunks represents a year of history on the planet earth. You could be looking down at the tree's life when the civil war was happening, the moon landing, even as far back as the Mayflower, if trees could talk! Excellent video, thanks.
