In high school metal shop I had a box and pan brake jump out of the rack and break my toe. Of course I attended all of the classes for the morning and afternoon, but when I got off of the bus I couldn't walk the three miles in the snow (okay, it was only rain) to home so had my sister go tell my mom. Of course mom didn't drive so it was a while before a neighbor could pick her up and then pick me up, but that's life in the country. I just sat in the ditch and waited. The doctor set the toe without warning me, which I thought was rather foolish, with his face right there where I could kick it.

Nathan, your aversion to the smell of vinegar made me chuckle. If you had been brought up in the UK, the smell of vinegar would always remind you of Fish N' Chips, the most revered food of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland (North and South)! I'm watching from BC, Canada but as a Fish N' Chips addict, I love the smell of vinegar. 😀

In the late seventies a dear widow lady asked me to refinish an antique butter churn with the stick plunger. It had rings around it to hold it together and they were galvanized. I soaked them a couple of days in vinegar and then in a copperizing solution. They turned out great and really looked good on the refinished wood. She was very pleased.

Hey, Nathan. If in the future, you make another anvil stand, you could use a stump, with a nice root ball. Make a square cut, with a chain saw (or whatever), then turn it upside down, on your Wood-Mizer, and cut the roots square, to the top. You now have a stand which sits very stable on a larger base than top. I' sure you could find a way to hold it stable, on your mill. Maybe, put a square cant on either side and a board under it. Just a thought. 😁✌🖖

I lucked out and found a large chunk of osage orange that had voids on two sides. Then I milled it into a block. The voids made it the same shape on top as the anvil feet. It also weighs a lot. A useful tip is use silicone or something to glue your stand to your floor. Its a pain to chase your anvil around the room.

Nathan, I really enjoy your channel. One word of caution. Please do not risk your eyes needlessly. I noticed you did not wear safety glasses when using the ramset. I worked construction for many years. Ramsets do not often blow out but it does happen. It just is not worth the risk to use pneumatics and powder tools without proper protection.

Instead of wax on the metal that you have removed the coating try clear lacquer either semi gloss or dull. Works great to keep metal from rusting. Well you will have to burn the piece before applying the lacquer or even the wax to keep the metal from rusting. Actually a little rust wouldn't be bad for the look of the base.

A round oak or yellow birch block is what I’ve seen anvils on. Solid and heavy. My dad claims washing galvanized roofing metal with vinegar will make it so paint will stick to it better. Think it serves the same purpose as what you did with the bolts. Can’t wait to see you in forge mode making stuff. I myself want to make knifes and hatchets some day with a forge.

fyi.... beneficial to give the bolts a quick dip into baking soda solution after the vinegar stripping. It'll neutralize the acid so the metal doesn't pit and rust too fast.... thx as always

Concave the bottom, leaving bout 2 inches around the bottom edge, and no matter where you set it on the concrete it shouldn't have any rocking. You don't have to carve out much. Any uneven concrete wont be a problem.

If you just wipe a galvanized surface with vinegar you can paint it. Suggestion, wipe the heads , wait a bit, dry it, and paint them. Then you still have the anti rust protection. A lot less problem than completely stripping the lag screw.
