Sometimes games can also be exceptionally instructive and interesting at the same time.
Info about Leela Zero:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leela_Zero
...
Leela Chess Zero (lc0) is a free, open-source, and neural network-based chess engine and distributed computing project.
Leela Zero's algorithm is based on DeepMind's 2017 paper about AlphaGo Zero.[3][6] Unlike the original Leela, which has a lot of human knowledge and heuristics programmed into it, Leela Zero only knows the basic rules and nothing more.[7]
Leela Zero is trained by a distributed effort, which is coordinated at the Leela Zero website. Members of the community provide computing resources by running the client, which generates self-play games and submits them to the server. The self-play games are used to train newer networks. Generally, over 500 clients have connected to the server to contribute resources.[7] The community has provided high quality code contributions as well.[7]
Leela Zero finished third at the BerryGenomics Cup World AI Go Tournament in Fuzhou, Fujian, China on 28 April 2018.[8]
Info about Alphazero:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlphaZero
AlphaZero is a computer program developed by the Alphabet-owned AI research company DeepMind, which uses an approach similar to AlphaGo Zero's to master not just Go, but also chess and shogi. On December 5, 2017 the DeepMind team released a preprint introducing AlphaZero, which, within 24 hours, achieved a superhuman level of play in these three games by defeating world-champion programs, Stockfish, elmo, and the 3-day version of AlphaGo Zero, in each case making use of custom tensor processing units (TPUs) that the Google programs were optimized to make use of.[1] AlphaZero was trained solely via "self-play" using 5,000 first-generation TPUs to generate the games and 64 second-generation TPUs to train the neural networks, all in parallel, with no access to opening books or endgame tables. After just four hours of training, DeepMind estimated AlphaZero was playing at a higher Elo rating than Stockfish; after 9 hours of training, the algorithm decisively defeated Stockfish 8 in a time-controlled 100-game tournament (28 wins, 0 losses, and 72 draws).[1][2][3] The trained algorithm played on a single machine with four TPUs.
...
Relation to AlphaGo Zero
Further information: AlphaGo Zero
AlphaZero (AZ) is a more generalized variant of the AlphaGo Zero (AGZ) algorithm, and is able to play shogi and chess as well as Go. Differences between AZ and AGZ include:[1]
AZ has hard-coded rules for setting search hyperparameters.
The neural network is now updated continually.
Go (unlike Chess) is symmetric under certain reflections and rotations; AlphaGo Zero was programmed to take advantage of these symmetries. AlphaZero is not.
Chess can end in a draw unlike Go; therefore AlphaZero can take into account the possibility of a drawn game.
AlphaZero vs. Stockfish and elmo

@@kingscrusher Kingscrusher, I find the resemblance on the strategic level between this Leela game and the famous Nezhmetdinov Queen sacrifice, Agad's favorite, forum.gofsdr.com/t/a-remarkable-reversal-ai-loses-match-to-top-legacy-engine/2580 really very remarkable. Rashid too, wins the black dark squared bishop (and a knight) for the Q, and gains complete domination over the dark squares on the kingside, also weakened by g6. It's worth mentioning.

Wow, how does Stockfish allow itself to get maneuvered into a situation where it has no real moves it can play? Kudos to Leela. That pin of the bishop on d7 was brutal.

The most amazing part about this video is that Kingcrusher actually understands the intent behind every move. Even though it's post mortem, would any of you have figured out the intent behind f4 to block the rook lift to the h-file (by a tempo delay)? I know I wouldn't. Oh and the Kingcrusher crushed all the nerds in a Blitz the other week. A god among amongst Kings!

Severely under-rated channel this one is...the explanations are way too amazing...also these are no ordinary games unlike some of the other channels where they show you every single game of rated players with almost no such interesting positions to deal with

An interesting note is that Leela has two knights and the opposite colored bishop, which, as we should all know from this channel, tends to favor the player on the attack. So not only does Stockfish have dark square holes, but Leela has 3 minor pieces to utilize them, while Stockfish has 0 to defend. In retrospect it's no wonder she is able to play so patiently even down material!

What an incredible game. It feels intuitive to take off the black bishop with it's fionchettoed, but to basically trade a queen and pawn for a knight and that bishop (-4!) is incredible, and then to see Leela exert long term pressure on the dark squares around the king. Honestly that was verging on emotional to watch, real enjoyment watching her co-ordinate the minor pieces like that.

Although the Queen sac is literally in the title, Qxb4 really surprised me. I was sure Leela would at least grab knight and rook (Qxc8) to get close to materialistic compensation. But only grabbing knight and bishop? Not something I would have thought of. Very instructiuonal, thank you for this great analysis.

@@phen-themoogle7651 - Jump to 10:33 OK I couldn't find the pgn file so I manually set up the position in Stockfish 11. Stockfish chooses 1. Qxd4 {(Qc4xd4 Nb4-d5 Ne4-d6 Qd8-b6 Nd6xc8 Re8xc8 Qd4-g4 Rc8-c2 Rd1-d2 Rc2xd2 Nf3xd2 Qb6-a5 Qg4-d4 Qa5xa3 Re1-b1 Be7-c5 Qd4-h4 Bc5-e7 Qh4-d4) 0.00/40 140} Result - that's a score of 0.00 which it is calling a draw depth 42. OK so I forced Stockfish 11 to make the Queen sacrifice and result - (1. Qxb4 Bxb4 {(Be7xb4 a3xb4 f7-f5 Ne4-f6+ Kg8-h8 Rd1xd4 Re8-e7 Re1-d1 Rc8-c7 Nf3-g5 Qd8-c8 b4-b5 b7-b6 Kg1-h2 Rc7-b7 Ng5xe6 Re7xe6 Nf6xd7 Kh8-g8 Nd7-f6+ Kg8-f7 Rd4-d8 Qc8xd8 Rd1xd8 Re6xe5 Nf6xh7 Re5xb5 Bh6-f4 a7-a5 Nh7-g5+ Kf7-e7 Rd8-g8 Rb7-d7 Rg8-g7+ Ke7-e8 Rg7xg6 a5-a4 Rg6-g8+ Ke8-e7 Rg8-g7+ Ke7-e8) 0.00/42 92}) It says a draw again 0.00 depth 42. So a conclusion. Stockfish is blind to the Queen sacrifice by Leela

I highly doubt that. It is not that hard to spot as its very tematic. What usually happens is that queen sacs, when they are done, the gains are usually quite easy to spot, a couple of moves ahead. There is no much risk involved. This one, however, it was very "iffy". Its too deep to calculate appropriately. Many Gms would easily spot it, but only Tal would be the one willing to go for it. Most would just dismiss it because its uncertain.... for a human.

I always get a little frisson of cognitive dissonance while analyzing these games when we look at a variation and say "this has been played before in a high level game" and then realize that the players involved in that earlier "high level" game had playing strengths over 1000 ELO points weaker than the current players...
