Not in a PhD but I am completely addicted to Tara's words. Everything she says resonates for me as if it came from the much better version of myself.

Thank you for the highly useful content that you share with us as PhD students. It is incredibly valuable in helping us standardize our work and understand what we need to demonstrate in each part of our PhD journey. I appreciate the clear distinctions you make between terms and what PhD examiners expect to see in every sentence, paragraph, and chapter of our PhD studies. As non-native speakers, we would greatly appreciate your guidance on the following, if you have time to address these points in you upcoming video episodes: I. Academic Terms and Their Interchangeability 1. What do we call the first section in the introduction chapter? Are these terms interchangeable: preface, background, overview, context, or executive summary? 2. Purpose and aim: Are these terms synonymous, and can we use them interchangeably? 3. Objective, goals, scope: How are these terms related, and can they be used interchangeably? 4. Justification and motivation: What's the difference between these two terms? 5. Problem statement, gap, rationale, hypothesis: How do these terms relate to each other, and can they be used interchangeably? 6. Problem, issue, challenge, obstacle, question: Are these terms synonymous, or do they have distinct meanings in an academic context? 7. Contribution, significance, novelty, originality, innovation, importance: What are the subtle differences between these terms? 8. Conclusion and summary: Are these terms interchangeable, or do they have distinct roles in the thesis? 9. Results, findings, outcomes, output: How do these terms differ in an academic context? 10. Implications, impact, benefit, reflection, insights, criticality: Can you explain the nuanced differences among these terms? 11. Theoretical framework, conceptual framework, study framework, study flowchart, study design, study technical structure, etc.: How should these terms be understood and used? 12. Methodology, method, approach, technique, strategy, concept, paradigm: Can you help clarify the distinctions between these terms? 13. Thesis versus dissertation: What are the key differences? 14. Study, research, project, manuscript, paper: How do these terms differ in an academic context? 15. Empirical, experimental, practical: What is the correct usage for these terms? 16. Drawbacks, pitfalls, shortcomings, disadvantages, cons, limitations, weaknesses: How are these terms related, and can they be used interchangeably? II. Common Sequence for the Introduction Chapter in a Dissertation/Thesis • What is the most common structure for the introduction chapter? How long should each section be in terms of word count, page count, or percentage of the overall thesis? 1. Overview (context, background, etc.) 2. Problem statement 3. Aim 4. Objective 5. Questions 6. Scope 7. Contribution 8. Thesis structure III. Typical Chapters in a PhD Thesis • What are the common chapters in a PhD study, and where does the discussion typically go? 1. Introduction 2. Literature review 3. Methodology 4. Analysis 5. Conclusion IV. Are the Literature Review, Methodology, and Study Area Part of the Introduction Chapter? • Should these sections be part of the introduction chapter, or are they separate chapters? V. Is It Repetitive to Have Objectives and Questions in the Introduction Chapter? • Are these sections redundant, and how do they differ in a typical thesis structure? VI. How Are the Aim, Objectives, Scope, and Methodology Linked? • Can you explain the connections between these concepts in the context of a PhD thesis? Thank you for taking the time to address these questions. It would be invaluable for us as PhD students to have clarity on these points.

Oh Tara, being late is not great from a living experience. My original submission deadline was in June 2023, but unfortunately, life threw unexpected challenges my way, and some of them were beyond my control. As a result, I couldn't meet that deadline. Now, I'm in a situation where I'm continuing my PhD without any funds or stipends. The silver lining is that I still have a fee waiver. However, I've also had some conflicts with my supervisors because they couldn't fully grasp the difficulties I've been facing. The university has granted me an extension, pushing the new deadline to next June. But honestly, the toll on my mental, financial, and physical well-being has been immense. So, I've made the decision to set my own deadline for December of this year. This way, I can hopefully find a decent job, take better care of my physical and mental health, and provide for my family.

Thank you Prof. I know only too well how important it is to finish your PhD as fast as possible and all the things that can go wrong. 8 weeks after I passed my viva my supervisor was made redundant leaving 10 PhD students stranded. Cost cutting. Thanks to Prof. Tara I finished my PhD in 3 years, just before the door slammed shut!

Great video Tara! Been following you ( so to speak) from Flinders up to where you are North! I've treated my PhD like a job, now completed data collection and essentially writing up. I plan to be done at the very start of the 4th year. Love your common sense, streetwise guidance. There is so much poor supervision: even where I am, a leading UK university ( and I mean leading, but will keep it anonymous in this forum) , the quality and training of supervisors seems to be an almost toally randon, unprofessional, haphazard process. The key underlying message of virtually all your videos is this: take responsibility and do not beleive evberything you are told and it is a good dictum to remember in this situation. In short, PhD superviison reminds me of the old , but true adage: University is the best education delivered by the worst teachers! Go well, Tara!

… was stuck and still stuck in an unsupportive toxic loop of no progress. Abandoned by advisor and program, now stuck trying to just focus on supporting family and keeping work I have. Oh I wish I could have gotten through quickly. Thank you for covering these topics. It gives a sense of dread in my mind when I see the letters, Ph.D, but at the same time, some hope.
