Triads, four note chords, pentatonics etc. You name it, you can do it! I find these concepts are all very much 'confidence led', what do you reckon? Cheers

@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition that's right. The most important thig that everyone must remember is the coherence and the direction of the phrase. About the notes, you can use whaterber you want. There's no wrong notes or wrong stuff, but there could be bad choices. I don't remember what artist said this, but it's true.

Man, that line at 5min is just spectacular... I'm trying to figure out what you're doing there, exactly. Any chance you putting up the tab for that? That's the sound I've been after for years.

I have studied all of the commonly recommended 'outside' approaches and have realised that they can all essentially boil down to a few basic ideas. I talk about this in my free 14 day course and show you how to work on these ideas yourself. The next one is starting in a couple of weeks, link in description above. To answer your question directly though to imitate that sound choose any pentatonic lick you like. Close your eyes and randomly point at a note in the lick, at this point you'll shift all the next notes up one fret, choose another random note, at this point return to the original notes, choose another random note, at this point shift all the next notes down one fret, choose another random note, at this point return to the original notes etc. This is the least elegant of the outside approaches but playing outside is ridiculously simple once you realise the same basic patterns are used time and time again. Hope to chat to you in the next course! cheers for your kind words

Absolutely, it gives your ear a fright when you first hear these 'wrong notes' in the familiar pentatonic shape! Thanks as always Donald

I have been listening to his 'Honeycomb' album profusely. I will get to the 12 tone stuff eventually once the sound is more solidly in my ears!
