Indian Head in the Adirondack Mountains is an epic overlook (summit) perched 750 feet above the Ausable Lakes within the private land of the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR). With amazing views of the the Ausable Lakes, Mt Colvin, Sawteeth, and portions of the Great Range, it has become one of the most iconic Instagram photos in the High Peaks region. It is arguably one of the best views in the Adirondacks.
This is one of the best hikes in the Adirondacks. The hike is about 9 miles round trip originating from the Ausable Rd trails head near St. Huberts across from the Roaring Brook Falls Trailhead.

One of my favorite views. I think I prefer it in the winter a bit more. There is more contrast between the dark rock and white snow.

Great video. I've climbed all around Indian Head but haven't taken time out for it yet. Real "Last of the Mohicans" stuff right there.

I did not get to Indian Head until my final 46er. We hiked my four last peaks and then went to Indian Head. I was so impressed I needed to get my family there. You will love it. I have not been there in the summer and winter, and I think it is more impressive in winter.

Two days ago, we hiked to Beaver Meadow falls, Rainbow falls, along the river, then up to Indianhead. One thing to mention is this is a long hike... 12 miles in over 6 hours. We are experienced hikers, but the trails were very muddy. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and don't attempt if you have knee, hip, back problems. Also, don't try to hike this in your Nikes or Vans! Hiking boots or trail shoes are a must!

There is a reason they call it an Adirondack Mile. Glad you enjoyed the amazing scenery.

No permit necessary. All campsites including the paid car camp ones are first come, first serve. Thanks for watching, see you outside.

If you are doing Indian head, you MUST also go to the fishhawk cliffs nearby!

It is hard to say because I do not know your pace or physical fitness. The hike is 9 miles with 8 of them on roads or gavel roads with modest elevation. The final 1/2 miles is a bit tougher. It took us 4.5 hours.

We just went to Rainbow Falls/Indianhead two days ago. It was about 12 miles and took just over 6 hours due to the very muddy trail conditions. We also stopped often for photos.

Is the trail steep?

The 4 miles on Lake rd are not steep at all. When you hit the actual trail, and the you gain over 650’ in .75 miles
