As he said, he prefers 'all in' as opposed to the slower and steady runs to just get a finish. He has had a finish already at Western so of course he is going to go for broke and course records because that's what he likes to do. You can't call it arrogance when he has already taken multiple course records and FKT's.

I think UTMB is a completely different beast than WS. 9000 m of climb at UTMB vs "only" 5000 m of climb at WS and also the climbs at UTMB are steeper. At UTMB the European Runners are the favorites and Jim has not got much chance to win.

He led for a while. Finished 5th, which is pretty good (I'm sure he wanted 1st tho). He is young. If he keeps up his spirit he'll eventually get there. But he and everyone should accept that with such daredevil speeds there will be a lot of failures.

No disrespect intended... but watching this video I feel like Jim has been portrayed a little bit hastily as (one of) the favorite for UTMB 2017 in view of his hereby documented blow up in WS2017. Xavier, Francois and Kilian have never experienced such SHTF situation in any big race as far as I have been able to ascertain. I can't wait for the race to start in a matter of hours now, I will be on site to cheer up Jim and the other front runners - it is 7 am as I write this, weather looks OK - but for Xst sake hold your horses cowboy Jim! No pressure, it's just running, you're young, charismatic and good looking and there will be more to your life than just running (and puking).

Long distance runners tend to be extremely lean (just as basically any elite athletes of endurance sports). Especially when there's so much elevation you cannot afford excess weight to carry up and down. It might not be "good for you", but there's no other way if you want to win, you have to be very lean. Pro/elite sports are usually not healthy, I hope he'll have a long career.

Wasn't sad to see Jim blow up (again) this year. His arrogance was totally classless before the race. Olson has the CR because he *finished the race* -- Jim should take some lessons in strategy and humility from him and the other elites.

Totally disagree. There is a difference between arrogance and confidence. Jim pushes the limits when it comes to ultra running, and that is why he has a higher chance of blowing up.

Great effort but wanting the adoration of others is never the reason to do something. Speed is as shallow as good looks and it's time we stop encouraging unhealthy behaviors. It's tantamount to encouraging models to starve themselves for a particular look. Doing this to solve a low self esteem, which is clearly the case, will never result in something truly positive. Supporters and fans will see this as an attack without realizing their enabling behaviors. Yeah he might hit a home run at some point but at what cost and is he okay with just being himself even if that doesn't mean being a prodigy child? Kilian was asked about what having the CRs for HR100 meant to him and he was quick to say it meant nothing, that it was all about the experience. Jim wanted nothing short of the record and he wanted it bad. Winning is an attitude more than it is a result.

It's ok if you don't like Walmsley. Fine. But your wont to blather on in an attempt at philosophical grandiosity is lame. Your sentences are weak endeavors; you apparently seek to spread retrospective clairvoiyance, but unless you are him, you cannot be in league with his determination. "Speed is as shallow as good looks...": Remind yourself that this is a race, not a runway strip modeling contest. Dumbass.
@fingertapper88
@fingertapper88 6 жыл бұрын
John Greever "philosophic grandiosity"? My points were pretty simple, not grandiose by any means, but it's clear you were threatened somehow by how I articulated my thoughts. It's okay to feel inadequate, no need to bombast in a really cringe-worthy fashion. Name calling tells me your value. I'm not in any way trying to sound smart or clairvoyant, I'm simply stating what I think to be obvious. He has a low self esteem, which is why he cares so much what people think about him. That's where his arrogance came from " I'm gonna crush the heat ". I do not hate him at all. I feel sorry for him because he doesn't realize he's awesome whether he's at the front or at the back. He doesn't believe that which is why it means so much for him to win over everyone else. It's really simple. Racing at that distance, or any distance really, is about overcoming personal boundaries. Any great, from Meb Keflezhigi to Kilian, will tell you that. He's still very young in the sport so he has a lot to learn about patience. I'm not saying anything controversial here.
@drbadger12
@drbadger12 6 жыл бұрын
Phillip Espinoza Your implying that it's wrong to push the limits. To say it's a risky approach or maybe not the most strategically sound in the goal of winning the race is reasonable but you associated negative character traits with it which most would say is going too far. Jim pushes the boundaries of what is possible, you may view that as arrogant but many including tons of competitors look at it with tons of respect because he's not just trying to win the race but also to run the best time he is capable of.
@BrentBroome
@BrentBroome 6 жыл бұрын
So, you're saying that phoning it in is just as good as giving it your all? Sorry, no. As Pre said, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." Doesn't matter if your best has you breaking CRs or just finishing ahead of the cutoffs, but kudos to Jim for truly searching the depths of what his best really is. It's a fine line and sometimes you go over it. Many of us believe he's going to nail it at the hundred mile distance soon, just like he's nailed it at so many shorter races and FKTs already. You may believe that Jim trying to be the best runner he can be is "clearly" the result of low self-esteem, but you clearly don't know what you're talking about. Jim seems to feel pretty good about himself these days. And with good reason. Take your pop psychology elsewhere and let's all be supportive and encouraging towards someone trying to do Very Hard Things with a high risk of failure. Go get 'em, Jim!
@fingertapper88
@fingertapper88 6 жыл бұрын
"I want to be this fan favorite prodigy guy that everyone wants me to be." If you guys don't see anything wrong with this sentence then I dunno what to tell you. It's not about his race style, it's about his motives which can be ascertained by listening to all of his interviews. He cares entirely too much about people's opinion of himself. In the Ultrarunning magazine interview about his UROY award, he talked about how much it meant to him to be recognized by others. All you guys see is someone chasing after goals and records in an inspiring way but if you listen and look closely, there's more to his motives that show it's not entirely healthy. He drinks quite a bit, and was pretty drunk days before WSER 2017, had a DUI incident with alcohol in his past. Most people might just ignore these things and consider it judgmental to read too much into them. Or they might like him too much to come off as critical or judgmental about his actions. But if you look closely all the puzzle pieces are there. On a different but related thought, if he was a middle of the packer you guys wouldn't care one bit about him and that only goes to affirm (what I perceive to be) his motives for trying to become the "best in the world". There are plenty who have admirable stories and put in as much effort, but you'll never laud them because they're not fast enough to be worth paying attention to. He is an extremely talented guy, but talent only gets you so far in Ultra. He also seems like a really nice guy albeit with some arrogant tendencies (ie thinking you're more powerful than the sun). That doesn't mean any comment about him other than adulation should be met with such vitriol. It also doesn't mean he can't have self esteem issues. To me it's abundantly clear but if you disagree that's fine. My point is we could (and should) stop idolizing and glorifying speed in Ultra so much yet still remain encouraging of people to push it to their limit. Also, I'm tired of Prefontaine being invoked in convos about 100 mile races, the guy never ran more than 13 minutes at a time so of course he could do a suicidal pace. Having a Prefontaine race style in an ultra gets you a DNF, clearly. Also, I hold the World Record for most Rubiks Cubes solved while running a marathon (845, previous record 175), for the guy who asked "Who the fuck are you?". Someone who breaks records.
