that chain on your trawl is weight for the lead line. to hold the trawl on the bottom. you need another chain running from board to board that will be your tickler chain. it should be a foot or so shorter than the lead line of your trawl so it rides the bottom a bit ahead of the lead line. that way when it kicks up the shrimp, they will go right in the trawl.

I thoroughly enjoyed shrimping with my grandfather in the New River and the Intracoastal Waterway out of Snead’s Ferry, NC. The last boat we used was a 15 1/2 foot Happy Traveler flat bottom fiberglass boat. We pulled an 18 foot trawl net with it and also used it for setting hill nets with. I did it by myself a couple of times after his cancer got him unable to go and believe me, it’s hard, especially when it comes time to take in the my and have to pull the boards in alone! Makes you appreciate the folks who do it every day!

I’ve been watching your stuff for a little over a day now and really love it because you kind of show real life and it’s interesting. It’s not always exciting but it is interesting and I’m enjoying it. One of your other videos it’s a couple hours long where are youwere in a number of different commercial fishing operations over the course of the two hours. Where is my favorite so far as matter fact, I’m trying to interest my sons coming to Saint Bernard Parish to do some fishing and enjoy local culture and seafood.

Thank you for sharing your life with the world. This segment reminded me of my youth. My cousin and I would go into the Intercoastal Waterways of Eastern North Carolina with our cast nets to get bait. We would haul out shrimp, crabs, mullet (for cut bait), and what we called "minnows." My Aunty would tell us to save the "minnows" and bring them back to the house and she would fry them up in a pan and serve them over rice. They were delicious!!! I also enjoy shrimp and grits. As Uncle Wimpy says, "That's some good eatin' there boy." Keep up the great work that you do. God Bless you and your family. Aloha, Alex Rubio

My father had a ‘Sportsman’s Net’ that we used to shrimp with in and around Galveston Bay. There was a limit of a 16 or 18 foot mouth and the boards had a limit on the size. It was intended to just catch bait shrimp and we were limited to 2 quarts each. (If I remember correctly.) Many memories of getting up early and getting out on the bay and watching the sunrise over the water. We would pinch the heads, peal and devein them when we got home. Momma would fix up a batter and fry the shrimp and some fries. Nothing better than a belly of fresh fried shrimp and fries and an afternoon nap.

I came up with a system that you could also try. I have a 19 ft sea pro. Installed 8” cleats about 3 ft up from the transom. I tie off with my pull rope on each side. Hang the boards off of them too when im setting up. Cant go fast with boards like this. But i have a system to pack the net and boards into a box of sort. Long story short, i never stop the boat. Leave the boat at idle speed. Pull in the boards. Hang the boards each side installed a lazy line to port board. The net at this time is right behind the boat still open but at the surface. You can watch it like this and tell if it is open right. I turn slightly port and pull the sock in with the lazy line. Get it, dump it, tie it, toss it. Straiten out and let the boards back in the water. Start picking during your next trawl. I also designed a bycatch reduction device at the front of the sock. Getting too many croakers and such. But your line attached to the boards to the boat should have markers on them to tell how much line you have out. I have 80 feet of line. Marked at 3 different spots plus the full length. Set for up to 5 ft of water, up to 8 ft of water, 16 ft then 26 ft. The ratio for line out is 3:1. Every ft of water is 3 ft of line. I will post a video on my channel here soon of how it is set up. When my net is packed away on the boat you cant even tell it is a net. TrWl boards and all. But, i am running my boat commercially. Be surprised how easily a 16 ft net can be pulled in at idle speed.
